Yeah, that's what I'm wondering about too. The font they picked bears a stylistic resemblance to Chinese characters, and fried rice is a Chinese/East Asian food. The racial undertone is clearly present, but I'm not sure what's offensive or negative in there.

"Bring the Noise, Beat Illinois" does not rhyme.

I've always wanted to go to a road game with one of these signs:

"You look dumb and annoy, when you can't pronounce Illinois"
or
"Illinois: the 'S' is silent, stupid"

I work in the art department of a local high school, and the cheer squad often comes to us to create sketches for giant posters to display at football and basketball games. Here's a few that went a bit close to the edge (and maybe over it):

- Against the Serra High Conquistadors (named for Junipero Serra): One poster had a nude Burt Reynolds look-alike wearing a conquistador helmet and being "sailed" by our school mascot. One had our mascot dressed as a native American preparing a giant pot of conquistador stew.

- Against the Crawford Colts: We had a meat grinder being operated by our mascot, with horse legs sticking out the feeder-funnel...text said, "Welcome to the Glue Factory"

- Against the Lincoln High Hornets: We had our mascot with a flamethrower, torching a hornet.

Can't remember the others, but they're always fun...

/BTW...these were all collaborations in the department...no single person was responsible (plausible deniability FTW)

We had an... unusual mascot/logo. I won't say which because it might be the only one. This logo had what could be described as spikes, or multiple spikes.

In the eighties, for our homecoming parade my little group came up with the slogan "Ride the Spike"
Our contribution to the parade was a float (automobile) which looked a little like the mascot/logo equipped with an articulated "spike" on the front which sort of rhythmically went up and down. Another car, representing our opponent, rode in front of us and I was chasing it. (To be fair, I might have seen Animal House for the first time. It wasn't my fault.)

I will, perhaps, go to my grave not knowing how we were not suspended, expelled or punished in some way.

It was pretty funny though!

My high school's arch rival was Brother Rice. There was a street in my hometown called "Beatrice," and every year before we played our rivals in football or hockey a bunch of guys would go and pull down the all-caps street signs and bring them to the games to get a nifty "BEAT RICE" thing going. Man, we were lame.
