"Local political and police officials are often targets of assassinations in Mexico, but rarely tourism officials."

Well ok then, just as long as it only rarely happens...

Sounds like a great place for a family vacation.

Dear Mexico,

Your country is a festering toilet of corruption, dope, thievery and homicidal, cocaine crazed gangsters and filth.

You're never going to repair it, you're never going to dismantle the gangster class, you're screwed.  For a small fee, we will pave it with enough bombs and strafing runs to pretty much erase the slime pit it's become and then you can get on your knees and pray to God that you don't let it happen again while you rebuild it for actual human beings

All the best, the USA, up here, a little north, where the rest of your family lives.

Or we could call off the War on DrugsTM, legalize, and cut off the drug cartel's source of funding.  Of course this would crash the only viable economic model Mexico has right now, so their country would probably slide farther into chaos.  I guess it depends on whether they want to be shot over somebody's drug smuggling, or shot while what little food they have is stolen.

President Enrique Pena Nieto condemned the attack in his Twitter account and said he had ordered a thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice. two tequilas and a mariachi band to sooth his woes, just as Gallegos Alvarez  would have wanted.

Mexico has energy reserves, high-value agriculture (agave, lettuce, tomatoes), and could potentially develop a tremendous service-based economy.  But all of those require 1) slaughtering all of the cartels into extinction and 2) putting an end to the hemorrhaging of the Mexican population into the US.

To be fair, he was a state tourism ministerand not the national tourism minister. So not that big of a loss.

Of course, the thing with the war on drugs is that it doesn't exist.  It's cops and robbers dress up to keep the dope industry profitable for both sides and we're the meat in the cocaine and violence sandwich.  The cops and cartels are the bread.

Obviously his firing indicates he wasn't doing a good job promoting tourism.

Since in about 20 years, our leading industry is going to be building, maintaining and fetching tea for the buyers of the unspoiled properties for wealthy Chinese, I'd say we're going to have no problem funding the mop crew for our pesky neighbors to the south,

No, no, no! When we said he traveled to the other side we meant he went to the USA. He's completely fine and not at all dead.

You're only half right. Mexico is could be a great country. It has oil. It has a large pool of cheap labor and agriculture and factories do a thriving business there and a decent portion of that is exported to the US. Mexicans are just as intelligent as Americans. It's unfortunate that not all of them are as well educated, but they are just as intelligent.

Just legalizing marijuana alone would cut off most of the drug cartel's money and anyone who thinks the cartels would just find something else illegal to do, they already are. Human smuggling, prostitution, extortion, even tapping into oil pipelines and siphoning it off for profit are already being done.

And apparently the Sad tag got assassinated by the cartels. Sad not only that someone was killed, but also because the cartels are killing the tourist industry. I've been to Mexico a number of times, but I will not go there now - not even to the tourist areas. Lo siento Mexico.

fark you. Mexico is a beautiful country where the majority of the people are good.
It's not fair to use the messed up part to condemn everyone and everything.
Maybe if you ever left your mom's bedroom you'd know something about other cultures, ITG.

/ffs.......

My mother's bedroom is, and since 1991, has been a grave, you presumptuous prat.  ITG, indeed, clichè boy.  I'm gonna let you in on a little secret.  If the "messed up parts" RUN the entire shebang and the cops who aren't on the take are afraid to do anything because they might get their asses shot off, THAT'S THE COUNTRY.  And planting pretty flowers and pleasantly distressed mission architecture don't mean sh*t.  And if Mexico is so wonderful, why does everybody want to move here and do construction?  It's a corrupt cesspit.  And it's not my fault for pointing it our.  The pretty parts are lipstick on a pig.  Violence, crime and dope are not, despite what it says on the R&B station, culture.  Sorry.
