I'm pretty sure people stopped "respecting him as an artist" after Jersey Girl.

If not that, then definitely by "Cop-Out"

You don't understand. Your senses and tastes aren't refined enough to understand.

It certainly isn't just a further propagation of the "I'm on the internet and I'm edgy and cool with excellent taste and that means nothing under the sun is as cool as it was back in the day". No sir, all of these haters have good reason to hate and they all hated whatever they hated before it was cool to hate it.

You're right to find them funny. Clerks was cheap and looked like crap and was just vulgar punch after vulgar punch, and this is why we love it. And it's also why at least some of us loved Clerks II.

And I think Clerks III is definitely going to clock in 'acceptably vulgar and funny' at the minimum, and who knows? It may very well end up being his best. Though I think you have to go pretty far to top 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'..... which I think is by far his best to date.

One thing is guaranteed. Whatever Dante is doing and wherever he is in Clerks III... he isn't even supposed to be there that day.

I actually like Comic Book Men. Reminds me of the store I used to shop at back in the 90s, with a little bit of geek Pawn Stars mixed in. The episode where Stan Lee did a book signing was especially a lot of fun.

/I buy everything digital now, so I kind of miss hanging out and talking about geeky stuff in the old store.

Excellent post.  I also enjoyed Jay and Silent Bob Strike back.  I never turned it on expecting a "smart" comedy.  I turned it on because I like a good laugh.  What he does definitely follows a formula, and most of the time I enjoy it.  It is predictable, raunchy, and entertaining.

Say what you will about Kevin Smith (I enjoyed Clerks and Mallrats.... the rest very MEH), I enjoy watching Comic Book Men and I don't read comic books.  I even download the Comic Book Men companion podcasts and listen to them at work to kill time.  Of course, my favorite podcast is still  http://www.thesecretcabal.com/ which is an excellent RPG and board gaming / miniature gaming podcast.  But I still listen to Comic Book Men and have a good time... and that's what it's all about, eh?

Now, for the article, this didn't really surprise me at all. I just hope it's a good movie. I also hope he didn't wake up still high from the night before, look at his clock, and misconstrue it as some sort of epiphany that Dante and Randall turned into potheads.

Indeed,

though the comical twist at the end and the fact that I can't hate John Goodman in anything pushed it just into "I think I like this" territory.

It's what you get sometimes when people try new things. I'd rather he made it than not.

Smith has an audience. He has a good idea of its size and will make a movie that will bring in enough cash to cover its costs.

2013-03-10 03:17:37 AM
I love Kevin Smith, and listen to a good number of his podcasts every week.  And I welcome a new Clerks movie.  I just really, REALLY hope that his new found obsession with pot since the "failure" of Zach and Miri doesn't end up in this movie.  Randall and Dante being high all the time would be quite annoying.

I, for one, find Smith a hell of a lot funnier when he isn't high.  It's rare these days, of course, but a couple weeks ago he did a Hollywood Babbleon completely sober, just to prove that he could.  And he was more present, less random, and (in my personal opinion) much funnier.  Unfortunately, I can't see him NOT putting this aspect into his characters, since he obviously sees Dante and Randall as the two extremes of his personality.

After looking him up on IMDB, I noticed he's been more active than I thought.  I disliked Chasing Amy but enjoyed Dogma.  Jay and Silent Bob Strikes back was a let down, but not a total disappointment. Same with Clerks 2.  I didn't watch Jersey Girl, and I had no idea he had anything to do with Zack and Miri make a porno, which I have not watched.  I would agree that he could do better than what he has done recently.  I still enjoy Comic Book Men and will continue to watch it, although I wonder why Kevin always wears that ugly jersey.  Orange and Blue don't do it for me.

Ash: although I wonder why Kevin always wears that ugly jersey.  Orange and Blue don't do it for me.

He claims to have an entire closet full of them, along with his "jorts."  He has actually lost a lot of weight recently, but he's still really self conscious about it to the point of a neurosis.  I guess getting tossed off a plane for being fat will do that to you.

I'm not going to hate on the "jorts" because shorts are comfortable and I can't blame someone for wanting comfort.  The jersey on the other hand... Anyway, I don't understand the Fark hate for Kevin and I probably never will.  Michael Bay?  Understood.  Kevin Smith?  Don't get it.  Oh well.  I would be more curious if someone liked everything he's done as opposed to hating everything he's done, but I still don't get the hate.  I think somewhere in between 'OK' to 'Pretty Good' and I guess that haters gotta hate and trolls gotta troll.

Well, I've loved everything he's done, but I will also admit it doesn't age well.  I loved Chasing Amy back in the day.  Still like it, but going back and watching it now you can see how his technique got a LOT better.  Using more than one camera, that actually  moves, was a huge thing missing that I didn't notice back then but can't stop noticing now.  I really liked Zac and Miri, as crude humor always has a place at the table for me.  And I look forward to Hit Somebody.

But as far as the old stuff goes, yeah, it was good for what it was.  But it shows it's age.

No, it was a bad movie.  It built up to an ending he didn't have the money to film, so instead of a shootout we got John Goodman talking about it.  It was the biggest letdown since the end of Gladiator, which should have been two armies fighting, not two idiots in a ring.

I was a big Kevin Smith fan until I read a couple of his books (well.....blog posts wrapped up and published as books), and they kind of made me sad. Smith seems like a really interesting guy, but he's got his friends, he's got his wife, he's got the life he wants, and that's it. He almost seems like he doesn't need to push himself or fight or do anything interesting. He's comfortable. He's got things to lose.

That being said, "Clerks II" was better than it had any right to be.

L.D. Ablo: So he's coming out of retirement from making movies to make another movie and then will go back into retirement.  Again.

To be fair, that's not the case and never was.  He wasn't planning on retiring completely, he still wanted to work in TV and smaller Internet projects and live shows.  After his last movie a couple of years ago he said he wanted to do one more then retire.  Problem was the movie he wanted to make was a hockey movie and he had about zero chance of getting a movie made on that subject.  Jason Mews suggested making it a TV miniseries instead, which is now in production.  Smith still wanted to make one more movie though and decided it might as well be Clerks 3, as he's had ideas for it floating around in his head for some time now.

It's easy to be confused if all you read were the breathless headlines a while ago "SMITH RETIRES ZOMG!"  Even some of the guys writing those articles didn't bother to check for the details.  Personally I find his movies "meh" except for Clerks 2 which I really liked.  I listen to his podcasts regularly, when he goes into his "ANYONE CAN DO THIS!" rants I tend to fast forward.  No, Kevin, not everybody can do that and have any hope of success, even if you are good and the tools are more accessible than ever.  Plus I think his views on critique are childish at best.

As for Clerks 3?  Whatever, I might buy a ticket.

2013-03-10 09:54:42 PM
It is a tad ironic that Kevin Smith's "Intervention Podcast" with a now smack-free Jason Mewes is conducted while he's high as a goddamn kite.

Smith footed the bill for MULTIPLE rehabs when Mewes was spiraling into a crack and heroin abyss and very well might have saved his life.

You don't know his little podcast empire. Dude's farkin' funny when he wants to be, but he spends all his time pimping his other shows out these days each show is just an advertisement for the others.

:(

Forgeticus had me howling.

That was awesome, thanks for sharing!!!!

ParagonComplex: You're probably a Reddit kid so anyone over 21 would be "old" to you in which, yes, I would be "old". Not bitter. What is there to be bitter about? The day I become "bitter" over something as insignificant as Reddit and it's failures of humanity is the day I get a sex change operation, become the star of a travelling donkey show in Mexico, and walk only using handstands.

26. The day you identify with a website and start hating on another is the day that you become one of the failures of humanity you refer to. Geeze, who honestly gives this much of a flying fark? I feel sorry for you if this isn't an otherwise successful troll.

Soulcatcher: GloomCookie613: Lsherm: I'm looking forward to it, but since he pissed off Harvey Weinstein I'm not sure where he's going to get the money for it.

Red State wasn't very good.

Agreed on Red State. It felt confused to me. Like the film was having an identity crisis over being horror or black comedy. Entire movie had me doing the notsureifserious.jpg face.

I agree that Red State was unfocused, but I think he got spectacular performances out of his actors. Michael Parks and Melissa Leo were on fire, dancing with wild abandon and doing shots of everclear Jesus on top of the crazy train.

I think many people dislike Red State simply because it spends most of its time on bat shiat crazy fundies.

/Anytime fundies are involved it IS a horror story.

I think he got spectacular performances out of his actors because they read a different script.

He WAS spoofing the fundies, and he did that great at the beginning of the movie.  He didn't follow up with a great ending, because he didn't have the money for it.
