All she'd have to do to get elected is promise to legalize oxycodone/oxycontin.  Shoe in to win.

Subby might want to explain which liberal got elected in Kentucky recently. Yes, Rand Paul is a civil libertarian of sorts, but still fairly conservative on most issues.

Prediction, if she is the nominee, McConell wins re-election by at least 10 percentage points. This race will be forgotten about 1 year from today.

why should Ashley Judd take advice from conservatives?  they've lost a long string of elections lately.  it would seem unwise to take advice from the losing team.

There's no gerrymandering to save the Turtle in a Senate race.

That's assuming his district doesn't turn into a Karl Rove/Tea Bagger proxy war where the Baggers prevail. If he doesn't get primaried I would agree with you, though.

Predictions concerning Republican victories don't have much of a recent track record.

McConnell is a Senator?

I like the argument that this is a ploy by the Dems to draw money to that race (since she could pull in a lot of funding, McConnell would have to actually spend time fundraising, etc.) in order to shake things up and keep Republican money away from other races.

"liberals elected"

Bernie Sanders and who?

2013-03-09 03:37:03 PM
I think it might be better for Ashley Judd, if she does want to run, to wait to challenge RAND PAUL.  I think a lot of Kentuckians are realizing that clown is just using the Senate to try to launch a Presidential bid, and would like a Senator who, you know, actually represents the state.

I also think he's going to lose some conservatives who aren't, to steal John McCain's phrase, "libertarians in their dorm rooms."  I'm not sure how well RAND PAUL's brand of faux-libertarianism plays here.

Even if she runs and loses and Mitch keeps his seat the Dems have lost nothing as she's self funding practically but the GOP will, as you say, have to divert a lot of time and money into the race and would not doubt make themselves look horrible in the process, especially to women voters nationally.

fta: But it's her protesting against coal that's attracted the most heat in Kentucky...

Her criticisms of mountaintop removal coal mining in KY will be one of their main lines of attack on her beyond the "Hollywood Liberal" thing. It will also be where a lot of the money to back Mitch will be coming from.  Also, I'm just counting down the moments till Rush calls her a femi-nazi and/or a slut on-air.

I'll never get why opposing mountain top removal gets so much play.  I understand that people need jobs, but do they really want Appalachian turned into a giant sludge pit?  It's not like the owners will have to live in it.

Actually, Subby, I'd be interested to hear how many actual liberals have gotten elected lately.

It's one of those words that gets thrown around in ways that would make Inigo Montoya look quizzical. When you push the centerline as far to the right as we have in the last decade, Richard Nixon was a "liberal."

Don't underestimate the local celebrity candidate, politics is mostly image. Arnold farking Schwarzenegger was governor of California.

2013-03-09 05:31:13 PM
Establishment Republicans like Yertle the Turtle aren't even surviving primaries these days. He's going to have to spend serious money to make it past that hurdle.

Meanwhile, she'll raise ginormous amounts of cash, and comes in with even more name recognition than the incumbent.

So either he enters the general already battered by negative ads in the primary and low on cash, or she ends up running against some teatard similar to Obtuse Angle or The Witch.

At that point, all she has to do is mount a good GOTV effort, push turnout up four or five points and she's good.

I'll admit I don't follow KY politics very closely, but in the past couple years I've lived here it seems that elected Democrats would pass for Republicans in most other states. In most of the adverts during election season I couldn't explicitly discern the difference between the Republicans and Dems that were running.

/anecdotal evidence

Ah, you must be a new arrival to the United States. I think I speak for all of us here when I say, welcome to our shores, and if there's anythng we can do to make the transition to your new homeland easier, just let us know, and we'll do our best to help. Most of the good things you've heard about our country are more or less true, but obviously you have some essential misunderstandings about how our political process works...

See, the thing is - a fairly liberal celeb running against the Republican Senate Minority Leader, in Kentucky? I'd have thought that was a joke candidate and not to be taken seriously at all.

But judging from the intensity of the attack ads, Mitch McConnell disagrees with me.

This tells me that there's something about Kentucky politics I don't properly understand. And until I do, I can't possibly guess which way Ashley Judd should go to improve her chances.

real short sighted thinking on the locals part. hell this stuff has gone on for years and the locals ignored it. which found a dramatic increase in black lung cases in Appalachia and widespread failures in the system that's supposed to detect and control coal dust exposures.

strip mining will stop exchange blank lung for sludge which will wash down hill and kill entire towns.

she criticized the tradition of a father giving away a daughter at a wedding - which she calls "a common vestige of male dominion over a woman's reproductive status."

Judd also criticized the practice of women taking the name of their husband's families "into which they have effectively been traded."

Judd also wrote that Christianity legitimizes male power over women.
In 2006, when Judd was asked about her decision not to have children, she was quoted as saying "it's unconscionable to breed, with the number of children who are starving to death in impoverished countries."

"The era of coal plant is over, unacceptable," Judd tweeted in October. She has also railed against the coal-mining practice of mountain-top removal in her native eastern Kentucky, calling it "environmental genocide."

Sorry. Judd ain't just a Democrat. She is even beyond a Fark level liberal. Full of the self-righteous extreme view points so prevalent in....well liberal extremist groups.

If I need to explain to you that some of those, other than her opinion on coal, are radical...well, I think you have been hanging out with extreme liberals a little too much.

I believe in competing currencies. I think it would be a good thing. But it is a radical viewpoint. I have the intelligence to recognize that it is because it is so far out of the mainstream.
