(Opposing Views)   Nine-year-old boy brings cupcakes to school for his birthday, gets in trouble for what he decorated them with. Were the decorations a) giant swastikas, b) pretty pot leaves, or c) little green army men?   (opposingviews.com) divider line 116

rkiller1: ArkAngel: rkiller1: CSB: Last weekend about thirty 4th-graders and their dads played paintball at a nearby course when we consumed some 30,000 rounds over the four hours shooting each other at 200fps playing capture-the-flag.  Sure, some boys cried, others fell, but on the bus ride home everyone laughed and proudly sported war bruises.  A week later I still smile about how my son and his comrades ambushed me.

Thank gawd for private school.

/At close range, those things hurt like the dickens.

I got tagged on the back of the neck from about 4 feet away once. Had a bleeding welt for a week and a half. Also taken shots to the balls.

Right. I foolishly wore a short-sleeve shirt because I assumed they'd be protective gear for rent.  Wrong!  I still have a circular black-and-blue welts like Gene Wilder in Blazing Saddles, "little bastard shot me in the ass"

I play in a white t-shirt and black athletic shorts now. You lose the pain control and hiding that you have with protective camo (which I used to wear), but you gain stamina from not sweating your ass off all day and speed and manueverability from the lack of thick clothing.

Thunderboy: Zero-tolerance is a bullshiat cop-out.  "It's just too much to have to process any given situation, so let's just rule all possible situations unacceptable and be done with it."

Benevolent Misanthrope: This is what happens when stupid people are allowed to be educators.  They spout back whatever bullshiat nonsense they've heard on advocating non-violence, no mater how nonsensical, and they apply it to all things, no matter how insignificant.  NO critical thought or plain old common sense, whatsoever.

It really is amazing how quickly people can become ensnared in wrong or illogical thinking when it prevails in their industry and is tied into their professional ethics. The TSA is probably another good example. A lot of professions have an us-against-the-world mentality, in the sense that no one who doesn't perform the job could ever have a sense of what it's like and is therefore incapable of really forming an opinion. I came into teaching with no preconceived ideas regarding zero-tolerance policy (and no education degree, so I hadn't been inculcated into the whole non-violence at all costs dogma), firmly embraced it while I was a teacher because co-workers and more experienced educators quickly paved the way for it be tied into my moral code and sense of protection over the small children I took care of - and then rejected it when I stopped teaching and took a step back because it made no sense, is wickedly counter-productive, and puts kids who should be in detention or even just given a few minutes to cool off with their backs against the recess fence...in jail.

But that said, Thunderboy, even though I largely agree with you, I do need to point out that sometimes they don't have a choice. It's not up to individual teachers to decide whether to enforce a policy that they will lose their jobs if they don't enforce, and even the administrators who set the policies have their hands tied by terrified and paranoid snowflake-parents. Tough situation. Can't say I have the first idea what to really do about it.

Good, I'm glad.  I think it's a good idea to suspend 5 year olds who point their finger guns, or throw air grenades, too.  We should make every effort to stigmatize violence and gun ownership.

What is this 'Opposing Views' that keeps showing up?  Why would you name your site 'Opposing Views' and then only run fluff pieces?  It's like they want a respectable sounding name on the letterhead so they can put it on their job applications when they try to find real work.

stirfrybry: dave2198: stirfrybry: A school teaching young kids to hate the military? Whoda thunk?

Sense, you make none.
child psychology, you know shiat about it. No wonder it makes no sense to you. You see, by making little plastic army men a bad thing, the children are being taught army men are bad. Pretty simple. Obviously too complicated for you, however that may be.

I thought only superheroes could make those kind of logical leaps.

/child psych is a bit more complicated than that

Can't say I have the first idea what to really do about it.

I can understand that, and I never meant to suggest that it was the fault of teachers/administrators, because I know they are beholden to the school board and parents in general.

I'm single with no kids, so my perspective here is limited-to-irrelevant, but pretty much all of my friends are married and have wonderful children, and I really fear for their futures.

Where did this hyper-sensitive derp come from, anyway?  We've been surrounded by violence since forever, so that's not it.

Yeah, and you're right that is a really uncreative and unintelligent policy and way of looking at the world. The media right-hand left-hand thing here is really bewildering to me - they report on stories like this with all the ourage in the world, without seeming to understand that these very policies are natural outcroppings of their own hysteria and fear-mongering.

Media over-hype and hero worship of school shooters? Parents committed to raising each child like it's a second coming that should never ever feel pain or rejection? Either way, my generation will be the last generation with a real American childhood - playing outside, taking bike rides outside of our parent's earshot, heading off into the woods with a BB gun, being able to walk alone to the bus stop. And that is sad.

Clearly we need to ban cupcakes.

Anything else?

Articles like this make me feel old. Really old. I wonder if this is how people felt when they watched people move from horse and buggies to cars, phones and television. I can't even comprehend what these kids are going to be like when they grow up. They're already like cultural aliens to me, and I'm not even middle aged.

People have informed skullkrusher and stirfryby multiple times, but they are going to keep posting.
