This law would be more effective in inner-city schools where punk kids are more likely to be a danger to teachers and other students.

The reason the GFWs (Gun Fearing Wussies) demand gun control is because they think everyone is as irresponsible as they are and would actually do this kind of stupid shiat.

Couple rounds just over head will get the little shiats to sit up and listen.

Within 6 months some teacher is going to misplace a firearm, guaranteed.

Everyone is a responsible gun owner until they aren't. Case in point.

School shootings happen everywhere.  In fact skimming the list of incidents in List of school shootings in the United States and ignoring suicides and one-one-one murders, it looks like it happens typically in the upscale suburbs (Sandy Hook, Aurora) or rural areas.

I give it one month before some student steals a gun from a teacher's desk and commits a violent crime with it.

Republicans have nothing but contempt for those moronic libtard union sucking anti-jesus teachers, but they trust them with a loaded gun in the same classroom with their own children. ???

Most teachers are intelligent and trustworthy people, unfortunately one will go off and shoot 1/2 the class because everybody failed the test or her 13 year old boy friend was caught kissing little Becky by the monkey bars. Even Republicans will admit this was a horrible idea.

Sandy hook was cause by an idiot parent, not unarmed teachers. Teachers can be idiots too.

Can't wait to hear about one of the teachers being over-powered by a classroom of angry kids.

I have two questions that were not addressed in TFA.

1. Will said teachers be trained? You know, to avoid shooting a kid by accident should they need to pull their gun.

2. Where will the guns be stored? Anything less than a gun safe or a holster and I see them getting swiped by kids.

I have other questions also that relate to ammo choices, but those are higher on my list of concerns.

Here's my opportunity to sell my child-sized targets at South Dakota gun ranges.

2013-03-08 08:37:02 PM
As a life-long gun owner and shooting enthusiast, I would recommend anyone who thinks this is a good idea should take a few hours on a Saturday, go to your local gun range, and observe the shooting skills of the average American gun owner -- knowing that those are the people who actually practice.
Then look at the off-target rounds and imagine them going through your kid's head.

Why do I have the feeling a teacher in SD is going to be shot with their own gun making it into the headlines?

/Not a gun owner
// Not for any reason other than I'd be more likely to accidentally shoot something at which I wasn't aiming

Short answer: they don't care

There are other states where this is already legal.

All the doomsday scenarios the left dreams up never happen. All the "save the day" scenarios dreamed up by the right never happen.

This is REALLY not as big a deal as many people are trying to make it out to be, on both sides.

Came here to say this.

Before too long, an inadvertent discharge or mishap will make national headlines.  It happens every year in the armed forces, and those guys qualify frequently.

Guns should be treated like cars, in my opinion.  Require regular range testing and safety testing (something I think should be done with cars as well, retake the test every few years).  Have part of that regular testing be a background and mental health check, something along those lines.  Maybe even require a guns class in high school like we have for driver's education.

We need to face the fact that guns are part of our culture at this point.  Banning guns will not work - we need education and regulation.

To make an analogy - guns are like sex.  We can either educate kids to try and get them to stay celibate (a joke, and is bad for society) or we can understand that sex is going to happen and educate them properly.

It's fascinating to see how something traumatic like a mass school shooting can drive two camps of people in such drastically different directions.

SD is a Right To Fire state with global warming denialism taught in public schools, so all the teachers are good, patriotic, impoverished citizens earning a much-more-than-sufficient 5 cents above minimum wage.

In high school once I saw pinned to the wall a newspaper clipping. The story was that a teacher was collecting homework, and when asked one student (who never had his homework) gave a snotty reply (i forget what) and the teacher grabbed a bust statue and beat the kid to death. Cops came, arrested him.   csb

Not really.  Newtown might have starkly exposed the rift, but it has existed for at least 2-3 generations.

And anti-theft laws haven't completely eliminated bank robberies, therefore the answer is to legalize armed robbery..

Eventually a teacher will go nuts, and kill students. What might happen then? Will people be begging to arm students? As a non-American I an gobsmacked at the idea that the solution is a massive arms race. Is the goal to turn the US into Somalia?

This law appears to be really vague and barely specifies any standards at all.  The one that was talked about in Virginia specified training and concealed carry.

So, in other words, you see a net ROI for government action, even though the benefit can't be measured in dollars and cents.

Nice to see you've grown a shade wiser.

This is going to be like when states let people bring guns into bars, isn't it?  500 farkers screaming about how it will be a bloodbath as drunken rednecks shoot each other, and then, nothing actually happens, and most people forget about it.

Any teacher who takes a gun to school is a cowardly little pussy, just like the asshats that support them.

Because what a school shooting needs is MORE guns lying around, and/or a crossfire. No way that could result in more tragedy, nope. Giving the elderly math teacher a shotgun is SUCH a better solution than 'Make firearms harder for lunatics to acquire.'

Not that I want to bring this conversation up here, but you only need to see the ROI if the programs were funded with borrowed money.  Require a licensing fee.  Pay for the school classes out of taxes.  I don't care (well I do, but relative to my economic concerns) what the government spends money on as long as it isn't borrowing it.

But I'll leave it at that.

2013-03-08 08:55:31 PM
I would think that this is going to be an insurance nightmare for schools because having more guns in them will increase the likelihood of an accidental shooting, driving up the cost of their insurance premium.

And in general, if you're a private citizen and try to stop a mass shooting with your legally owned and permitted gun, and you end up killing or hurting someone who isn't the shooter, does the law provide any kind of liability protection in civil court?

2013-03-08 08:55:37 PM
Speaking as a teacher i say this right to carry is meaningless without the power to back it up.

Teachers should be allowed to shoot up to three students per quarter.  Maybe 4 or 5 in a middle school.

Classroom management would get  mucheasier, and society would greatly benefit in the long run.

/I would have reached my quota a long time ago.

And then this just happened in NY today:

A New York town that began assigning an armed police officer to guard a high school in the wake of the Connecticut massacre has suspended the program after an officer accidentally discharged his pistol in a hallway while classes were in session. [link]
