Pleasant enough, but "pretty" kicked up to "glamorous" isn't beauty. It's presence and the sell.

Quantum Apostrophe: I feel the need to rant against the people who have completely unrealistic hopes and expectations of an innocuous technology. Every 3D printed Yoda coffee cup means we're just weeks away from Star Trek to some people.

You're attacking strawmen, in that case.

We're interested in the technology because it is a  new and interesting technology with a lot of long-term potential. I'm truly sorry that you go burned because science didn't give you jet packs and hover boards, but that doesn't negate the fact that technology does improve over time and that, as an historical trend, the future does not look like the past. Please stop projecting your own unrealistic expectations on to the rest of us. We are fully aware that it takes time for technologies to go from the prototype/exploration phase to the useful commercial phase, and that not every new tech makes the cut. With all due respect: no farking duh!

You certainly don't need to jump into every single damned 3D printing thread to spray your personal cynicism all over the walls. We get it: you aren't impressed. Duly noted.

Some even go so far as to wear flattering clothes and makeup for big events in an attempt to look better than did in their high school year book picture.

I know, startling.  It's a crazy world.

I'm just ignoring you 3D nuts because if it isn't obvious it's just stunts and trinkets by now, it never will sink in.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to use my '90s virtual reality gear to visit the '70s OTRAG private space port.

/See how I can mix the dead dreams and delusions from the past to mock the fantasies of the present?

If you feel the need to rant against a piece of fairly innocuous technology, you may need therapy.

I feel the need to rant against the people who have completely unrealistic hopes and expectations of an innocuous technology. Every 3D printed Yoda coffee cup means we're just weeks away from Star Trek to some people.

This is my problem about the things you write: you say completely inaccurate things about current technology and then extrapolate how impossible future applications are. In this thread you claimed

1. There are no current uses for 3D printing beyond "stunts and trinkets"
2. The 70's OTRAG company was a technological dead end
3. 90's style VR was a technological dead end

I'm picking these three simply because a cursory Google search instantly refutes, well, the first two. We'll get back to the third one. No expert knowledge or industry insider perspective required.

1. 3D printing is used in serious applications, especially in manufacturing and medicine.  In medicine, 3D printing is an an emerging technique being used for actual prosthetics. And it's not just hips anymore. Recent landmarks have been 3D printed jawbones and cranial walls. There are many types of industrial printers on the market, like ones specifically tailored for aerospace quality titanium and aluminum.

2. Unless you have reason to question the veracity of wikipedia, its article on ORTAG indicates the project ended due to political reasons and to unburden the Ariane line of rockets (which are still in use as the biggest European launch provider) from competition.

3. So yes, 90's style VR never took off, for good reasons. VR tech does still have important niche uses, especially in military vehicles and simulators. But The real maturation of this tech is happening through AR, with Google Glass right at the forefront. Does it mean everyone's going to be wearing those glasses? Probably not, but I'd wager that there will be implications that affect your life even if you never know it.

So dude, I don't understand your issue with cheering on technological progress. Good tech takes a while to get to market applications, and sometimes it'll arrive after decades of slow progress and setbacks. Sometimes setbacks happen because of money, or politics. But this never changes the fact that we'll eventually discover some new way to make things better,

Of course, google's idea of maturing that concept will probably be trying to sell you things you look at often..

Cool dress? Without a doubt. First 3d printed dress? I don't think so: http://www.3dprinter.net/3d-printed-fa shion-hits-paris-fashion-week

Also, Stohl's circular knitting machines can create a full seamless garment in minutes, no sewing/gluing/painting necessary. 3d printed clothing already existed, if you're ok with yarn acting as the 'ink'

Yeah that might fall under C too. Evil causes school shootings - the media just blames music because it's a lot easier than admitting society has deeper issues that banning a CD or giving it an R rating can't solve..

I think I might prefer her without the implants, and going a little easier on the makeup, especially the eyebrow pencil, and, although this is not of her doing so I cannot blame her for it: if she a neck that was longer than 2.5".

Do you have to have a Ferrari to recognise it's better than a Toyota?

I have QA-like conversations with people in real life as well. I need to figure out a better way to articulate that the limitations on a current type of technology don't necessarily hold in the long-term.

Just ask them if they rode their horse with the fancy saddle to work today.

Quantum Apostrophe: LowbrowDeluxe: Slaxl: I like the way every day there's something new about 3d printing. QA must be in the darkest pits of despair.

I know.  It's the best part of every day now.  As the technology expands my fondest hope is to 3D print some part for a rocket ship someday just for the lols.  Anyone else involved will probably think I've gone mad.

My God, we've made a gown worn by a whore. Surely, the Rapture is nigh? I love how we just gloss over the hand assembled and painted part, too. Or how we hype up the "entirely virtual" while ignoring the world-wide infrastructure of, you know, like gloopy old factories and stuff that built the real stuff these wankers are using...

I'm just ignoring you 3D nuts because if it isn't obvious it's just stunts and trinkets by now, it never will sink in.

I'll just watch for the spike in pharmaceuticals when reality hits and Prozac goes through the roof...

You mean... we'll never just sit at home and 3D print everything from a magical machine??? BUt but but... computers and stuff? Like, Star Trek and sci-fi? You mean like, we'll have to build stuff like the Luddite way? NNNoooooo!!!!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to use my '90s virtual reality gear to visit the '70s OTRAG private space port.

Eh?  Nose is the same.  Same eyes, mouth, chin, etc.  She might have had implants, but I'm not sure.  However, those two pictures don't really indicate anything besides aging well and having a really good makeup artist.
