Soon...

Haven't those been De-commissioned?

they get mothballed, and then pulled back into service. Pilots love the damn ugly beasts, they are still highly effective, and they have a great psychological effect on the battlefield.

Michigan nat'l guard has a full wing of them, but that may change this year.

/still remember watching them fly patrol over SE michigan on and shortly after 9/11

CT used to have them, a good friend of mine was a pilot. It was a shameful day when we lost them. But yeah, many were refit from 99-02, new wing reenforcements, nav, avionics, etc. We've just learned to use them sparingly, it seems. They do have a finite life, afterall.

and yeah, the stories I've heard about the shock value of the sound. No other plane sounds like it, barring some bombadier(iirc) that uses the same engines. And the gun is demoralizing. I've been in awe of that plane since I was a kid, and a lot of my best memories revolve around it.

/they used to do the parades in the summer, and it was tradition to buzz friends/families houses
//they gave no farks, and did some crazy shiat. Incredible pilots.
///I miss seeing those crazy farks flying MoE

According to wikipedia there are still 345 Thunderbolt II's in service, currently scheduled to be flying till 2028, with some being phased out starting in 2018.

Very interesting. That's actually quite sensible from their POV.

it was. thanks for drawing my attention to it.

Stratfor is good stuff. I need to remember to read their writeups whenever international bullshiat is going down.

Interesting how, recently, America and South Korea have wised up to NK's game and it looks like they will no longer play by Kim Joffrey-Un's rules. I can't see how there'll be any multi-party talks now. Even China is tired of North Korea's shiat. Giving into their demands will just continue the cycle, and I keep getting a feeling that everyone with an interest in the situation is sick of this stupid game. Whether this is an "ignore and don't feed the troll until he behaves" moment, or the powers in the region finally want to get it done and over with somehow, remains to be seen.

Apparently they did actually launch a multi-staged rocket and achieved orbit just recently. Unless I missed the part about it not being true.

The U.S. also has an anti-ICBM system in place. Hopefully it works well enough. The greater threat is us being pulled into a land war to defend South Korea.

Oh for Fark's sake, first Las Pegasus implodes, now the next big con has to be held in the smoldering crater and involves everyone LARPing to Fallout:Equestria. This is the WORST. POSSIBLE. THING. But seriously, folks, what's going to happen is this:

1) Not a shot will be fired.
2) Just because the nonaggression pact's over (at least until Un changes his mind) doesn't require Un to attack.
3) The general rule is that even if you're batshiat crazy enough to start a "preemptive" nuclear war, you just do it, and you certainly don't telegraph your intentions by making your attack contingent on your adversary's cancellation of routine military exercises on March 11th.

4) Here's what I was originally going to use before this thread went full pony, except that Rodman was going to be the thin man that would have been a wasteful fizzle, and then an actual thin man showed up in the first GIS result. "Thanks, Rodman."

ShawnDoc: blipponaut: If we just started a campaign of dropping food, long range communication devices, portable DVD players, S. Korean magazines, movies, etc... it'd probably do a lot more to disrupt the suppressed culture up there. Label everything as being from your S. Korean and American friends and just wait. Information is more powerful, and it's something these people sorely lack. Look at what happened to China when things opened up.

Because N. Korea would just let you do that.

Non-evil Monkey: If it comes to shooting, China will either sit on the sidelines (after making it abundantly clear that American and South Korean troops are not to cross their border under any circumstances) or simply invade North Korea themselves since if it's going to happen anyways. they might as well do it on their own terms.  The mere fact they voted for the sanctions instead of vetoing it tells us that it's pretty much a forgone conclusion that they will not back North Korea should they start another war.

Of course as always with North Korea, this could just be another case of a day ending in "y",  any Farkers know if have they ever explicitly shredded the ceasefire agreement before?

Explicitly? No. Not that I am aware of. Not unless you count the various actions over the years (including the so-called "Second Korean War" between 1966 and 1969) that have been a bit of saber rattling, often from both sides. In 1994, there was some concern that the situation was becoming heated enough under Kim Jong-Il that there might be action, but Kim backed down (as usual). In the mid 90's, again, there was strong rhetoric, but again, Kim backed down.

This is the first time that I am aware of that North Korea has abrogated the truce.

Technically, the two nations have been at war since the 50's, since it is a cease-fire/truce, and not a peace treaty. So it's less a matter of "starting" a war than it is "continuing" one that's been ongoing for about 60 years. This Kim is young--and too stupid to know when to take the cotton out of his ears and stick it in his mouth. His father was a moron, too, but he had the good sense to know when to STFU and go sit in a corner before he pissed anyone off too much. This joker doesn't, and now he's pissed off China--not a good idea. I suspect either the DPRK will soon either be a Chinese territory or the Chinese will quietly agree to stand aside while the US or South Korea does whatever needs done in the event of an attack, then afterwards, China will register a strongly worded but non-binding protest about it as Korea becomes a single country. Alternately, China will tell this kid to STFU and go watch some damn basketball while the grownups talk.

Lost Thought 00: J. Frank Parnell: Lost Thought 00: Unless NK manages to phase through the DMZ, it's impossible to not involve us

Just because there's some US soldiers there doesn't mean there will be immediate revenge taken upon whoever kills them. They'll be called "heroes who bravely gave their lives defending freedom". Medals and flags will be given to their next of kin. Maybe there will be a TV special. Then it's just a brief note in the history books.

Uh huh. 30,000 deaths of US citizens, and no response? In this day and age, where we freak out over a single IED? Keep smoking

Are you kidding? The GOP goes on a derp frenzy over not knowing exactly how an ambassador died 20 minutes after an incident. 30,000 deaths? The feces will be flung with such velocity it could knock the planet off it's orbit.

I am a big fan of MASH, and I wonder what Alda would say right now.  When he took over, the show got all anti-war feel about it.  Is he ticked that after all this time the war was never really over and it may heat up again?

It does seem weird to take up arms again over the same issues when the men that fought it the first time are passing away of old age.  I had a coworker who was infantry during the last fight with NK, barely got a word from him about it.  His obit. said more about his service.  He passed away getting close to two years ago.

by the time we got our troops in theatre enough to do anything effective, we'd have lost most of south korea, if not all of it.  there's even a chance the Norks could hit Japan.  for extra giggles, NK could rack off some rounds at Taiwan.  meanwhile, we'll spend time bogged down in debate about sequester cuts and who's gonna pay for the logistics requires to recall our reservists, get 'em combat ready and geared, then put them on the ground in theater.  forget about any sort of economic recover - not only did those spending cuts kick us in the nuts, we also just took a lot of reservists out of the economy and put 'em on the front lines.

Why does everyone assume that the South Koreans are total pansies, and would get rolled?  They've spent the past 60 years building up their military as well.  They might not have the sheer mass of men under arms that the North has, but THEIR troops are actually fed, and they most certainly have better force multipliers.

because the South koreans are sane.  the North Koreans are the f*cking zerg.

The last thing in the world we'll do is drop a nuke, even in retaliation. Honestly It's one of the few rational fears I have that the first to drop a nuke will be retaliated against by all other capable nations regardless of loyalties and treaties. One detonation by any of the power player nations will also give excuse for other conflicts to start chain reaction style... India and Pakistan, Israel and everybody else in the mid east ect... too much too far apart to clean the mess and play world police like we like to do.

If we get involved in NK whether they try to nuke or not, we will likely use drones to hammer key installations and limit armored barricade as SK and us forces cross the DMZ. A land war is the most PC way to invade, and if done at night will be safer for the soldiers involved... Doubt NK has night vision, but if they do it would be old tech and not as efficient.

Regardless, If anything happens, It's likely to be fairly quick in my mind. I could be overconfident, but I also believe that quality always beats quantity. As long as the war commander in charge isn't stupid or arrogant about any of this we're fine. China will probably stay out and focus on refugee control unless directly provoked... Probably by Japan, but I doubt any of them are that stupid... I hope

I'm pretty sure China will just raise its hand say "We've got this". Then China will drag NK into a room and come out an hour later zipping it's fly and wiping blood off its hands and say "Won't be anymore trouble out of that one."

The U.S. also has an anti-ICBM system in place. Hopefully it works well enough. The greater threat is us being pulled into a land war to defend South Korea.
