Weaver95: RickN99: Weaver95: i'm SO glad we put most of our operational military in the middle east to protect Israel from the consequences of their own stupidity.  oooo!  plus the GOP slap fight over taxes that ended up with the sequester cuts and impacting military readiness.  awesome job guys!  thanks!

You should write a poem about this for your 9th grade lit class.  Maybe you'll get a B and your parents will bump up your allowance.

If I'd wanted to hear your opinion, i'd have beaten it out of you.  now go get yer shine box.

Ok, but srsly, Weav - are we really bemoaning that we don't have the wherewithal to get into another dumb f**kin' war on the other side of the planet? Although you give me an idea - our faithful "allies" (no, I couldn't type it with a straight face) Israel owe us one - maybe THEY could fight this one for us. I'm pretty sure the IDF could make  short work of Best Korea. I'm sure they'd be happy to do it in gratitude for all the decades of help we've given them - seeing as how they're our "allies".

Soon...

Haven't those been De-commissioned?

they get mothballed, and then pulled back into service. Pilots love the damn ugly beasts, they are still highly effective, and they have a great psychological effect on the battlefield.

Michigan nat'l guard has a full wing of them, but that may change this year.

/still remember watching them fly patrol over SE michigan on and shortly after 9/11

CT used to have them, a good friend of mine was a pilot. It was a shameful day when we lost them. But yeah, many were refit from 99-02, new wing reenforcements, nav, avionics, etc. We've just learned to use them sparingly, it seems. They do have a finite life, afterall.

and yeah, the stories I've heard about the shock value of the sound. No other plane sounds like it, barring some bombadier(iirc) that uses the same engines. And the gun is demoralizing. I've been in awe of that plane since I was a kid, and a lot of my best memories revolve around it.

/they used to do the parades in the summer, and it was tradition to buzz friends/families houses
//they gave no farks, and did some crazy shiat. Incredible pilots.
///I miss seeing those crazy farks flying MoE

NobleHam: You're right, if you believe the threat is serious whether NK is serious or not. That is, even if they actually want to go to war, which I agree is really unlikely, whether they are an actual threat. I don't believe they are. Japan's not seriously threatened. NK has the theoretical capability to deliver a nuke on an ICBM, but they don't have the ICBM or the practical experience to do that, and their short-range rockets have never hit within 100 miles of their target. Their range is limited to where a plane could drop one, which is nowhere outside their borders. Their greatest threat is the supposed ability to shell Seoul, so there would be uncertainty in the South Korean markets, but Japan and HK have nothing to lose.

Eeyup. And I'm in agreement with you on all points here.

Hostilities will most likely not break out. If they do, the worst-case short-term scenario for anyone not living within shooting distance is the panic that conventional hostilities would bring. (The worst-case really-long-term scenario is a limited nuclear exchange that "teaches" the world that there exists a winning move other than "not to play." As long as electorates remember the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the politicians will remember that Hiroshima and Nagasaki also resulted in 50+ years of political fallout, and both groups of people will remain strongly incentivized to keep the genie in its bottle.)

In this instance, I don't believe true power lies with Kim Jong-un. My surmisement is that the top military brass has usurped it, viewing Jong-un to be too soft, too potentially Western-friendly. They have his number, so to speak, and will act freely despite everything. In fact, I believe Jong-un to be a virtual prisoner of the DPRK's true leadership, a powerless figurehead. His friendship with Dennis Rodman might be a clue, especially what Jong-un told him to tell Obama: "Just call me." If it were that simple, all this saber-rattling could end instantaneously.

hardinparamedic: Marcintosh: military technology
? US companies sell them military technology ? WTF is THAT all about?

BTW do you really think the kid is running the show at this point?

Sanctions (as far as I've read) are what started the Pacific War Theater. No oil imports with winter coming on and that sort of thing.

Sanctions imposed as a direct result of the atrocities commited by the Japanese in the Far East, including the Rape of Nanking. Ignoring the fact that the Imperial Japanese Army had been aquiring Liebensbaum for the better half of the 20th century in Asia up until that point, and raping and murdering their way through China, Korea, and every island they could get their hands on.

Please, don't drink the Historical Revisionist Kool-Aid. The Japanese were not the victims.

Well, kind of. Until the invasion of the ROC there wasn't anything in Japan's portfolio of atrocities worse than say, Belgium, or any of the other colonial powers. The "West" certainly deserves at least a little bit of blame for helping to push Japan into the arms of the military and its own ideas of racial superiority. In terms of appeasement all Japan wanted was a seat at the table of the Great Powers - which they had certainly earned by any early 20th century metric. They singled handedly defeated another Great Power - on a really embarrassing (for Russia) scale, upheld their international obligations in Sibera and in the first World War and carved out their own colonial empire and managed to develop their society in terms of everything from industry to democracy at a rate that put the west to shame. And then at the Paris Peace Conference the West still insisted that the Japanese were an inferior race to the Europeans, topped off with the unequal naval treaties that the US and the UK designed to ensure their hegemony of the Asia-Pacific region, well, it's enough to give a young, unsure nation a massive complex.

johnny_vegas: you know south jersey surprised me in that regard

What surprised me was that the supposed "Conventional knowledge" of racial politics wasn't anywhere close to being accurate. I honestly believed at the time that the thought that the south was the place where overt racism was common while the Northeast was where racism was essentially wiped out was the truth. It turned out that the opposite was true, or at least even. It was at that point where I decided to completely reject the politics of race and to dismiss anyone who used the race card as a trump without any solid base of reasoning.

"He's black. I get it." Doesn't work against someone who voted for and donated to  the "Black Guy" the first time around. It's a weak argument on its face. One can have legitimate issues with someones policies without being seen as a racist.

Millennium: Omahawg: make me some tea: seadoo2006: So, answer me this: Has Best Korea significantly improved their rocket technology from what I can buy at the hobby shop, or are they still dropping ICBMs into the ocean 3 miles from launch?

Apparently they did actually launch a multi-staged rocket and achieved orbit just recently. Unless I missed the part about it not being true.

The U.S. also has an anti-ICBM system in place. Hopefully it works well enough. The greater threat is us being pulled into a land war to defend South Korea.

nah, America would never be so dumb to get involved in a land war in asia after vietnam. we learned our lesson! right? RIGHT!?!?!?

Every last thread about North Korea in the past month has had at least one guy claiming that a brilliant tactic to destroy a US city would be to send over a nuclear bomb hidden inside a cargo contain on a cargo ship, then detonate it as the ship docks.  I think that's what neogoats is talking about here.

Kim Jong Un doesn't seem crazy, while his father definitely was.  Does he even have control over Best Korea right now?

Let's just give the country to China.  They won't let Worst Korea unite with it, so let China have it, and it can be the DMZ between China and Western allies.  For all China's problems, wouldn't someone rather be a poor Chinese citizen than a poor Best Korean citizen?

seadoo2006: Ooooh, yay, another full-scale ground war the US is going to be in ... is this a repeat from the 1950s?

If they actively launch shiat at us, well, yes, it will in fact be another full-scale ground war, because what the hell else are we supposed to do, sit there and take it? Us putting up with them all these years was dependent on them not launching shiat at people. The understanding has been, if they launch shiat at someone, we march in and show them how outdated and obsolete their army really is.

The initial artillery barrage is going to be hell, but as soon as the US/SK/whoever else coalition gets its feet under them, I expect it'd be a pretty fast advance. I'd expect that everyone is either going to be the guy that actively looks for someone to surrender to, or the guy that hides out in the mountains for decades, with not a whole hell of a lot of in-between. If NK fires the first shot, China may just roll their eyes and go 'you brought this on yourself, have fun dying' and leave them to their fate.

China doesn't want them. That's how they've been propped up these past years. China kept them just solvent enough to keep NK refugees from flooding into China. But China appears to have had just about enough of the Kims and things may be coming to a head as a result. In the Kim Il-Sung days, they had both the Soviet Union and China to fall back on.
