StreetlightInTheGhetto: Chavez wasn't entirely the embodiment of evil, but he certainly wasn't a saint either.  Him in particular - it's amazing how hard it is for people to take a middle ground.

Yeah, he focused on the poor.  They needed to be focused on.  He didn't change their lives or chances for self-fufillment as much as some would like to think, and the progress-since-in-office statistics were likely heavily skewed or exaggerated (specifically thinking of literacy with a few nuns quoted in villages supposedly now 90% literate where the workers on the ground said it was really like 50, *if* that, etc.)

Well, of course he didn't help them much.  That was inevitable.  What kind of cretin, given a chance to emulate the policies of a tropical island about a hundred miles off the coast of a major world power, picks Cuba over Taiwan?

In general I'm just tired as f--k of putting people into easy boxes.  I work with a rather liberal bunch, and I'm rather liberal myself, and it kind of pissed me off when my coworker was talking about Chavez yesterday.  Then again, I've worked in a more Republican environment and there was plenty of selective filtering there too.  Stupid on all fronts.

Yes. Because you have to be a conservative to hate someone who brutally tortured and intimidated dissidents.

/derp. you has it.

And altered the constitution to keep himself in power indefinitely. That sounds sooooo democratic...

[shrug]

He was no worse than any other dictator, and possibly better than, say, Pinochet or Peron down there in South America. He seems to be genuinely mourned by his people, or at least some of them. He was an idiot and a thug and nobody in America will be sorry he's gone (and probably few down in his neck of the woods), but he was hardly in the same league as Kim Jong-Un or even Saddam Hussein.

His biggest crime was having oil and not playing by America's rules. A lot of Americans on both sides of the aisle just HATE that in a dictator.

There are a fair number of Chileans who genuinely mourned Pinochet, or at least thought he was better than Allende.

/not saying they're right, just saying

Just a small clue.  Nobody really wants their oil.  It's the worst sludgy dinosaur crap on the planet.

You realize that they refine it first, right?

Yeah, and it's generally hard to refine it.  It's generally not worth the effort when there are other lighter crudes around.

It will only last until the next revolution. Then someone will incinerate it.

If this shiat was in his will, it just proves that his ego simply could not comprehend the idea that people were not completely thrilled with his despotic actions during his tenure.  He couldn't conceive of the notion that one day the people would vandalize his body and arrange a lovely new art project involving farm animals.

I have seen Lenin on display in his tomb. Or at least I've seen the wax figure they claim is Lenin. One of the creepiest moments i've ever experienced.
