Who hasn't figured this out yet? Here's 2013 national politics in a nutshell:

The far right is going to vilify President Obama no matter what he does. Really. It doesn't matter a whit what it is, it will be all wrong and the far right will call him names for doing it, whatever it is.

Why do they do this? Because the loudest noise is convincing the dumb guys (of whom there are very, very many) that anyone who is not far right is evil.

Who is the loudest noise? A handful of incredibly rich individuals and corporations have manipulated, invented, and outright bought many religious and political organs of propaganda.

Their purpose? More money and fewer restrictions for themselves, and damn the proletariat, international relations, the environment and whatever else they find inconvenient.

Why don't more people recognize this? Because the rich and powerful work through proxies. You are never going to hear a public speech by the Koch Brothers, because they can control your mind set without taking any of the responsibility. They hire the smartest hired guns around to manipulate us, and they are very successful at it.

How hard is the decision about whether to go forward or backward during an egg roll? "As of now, the decision has been made that the Daytona 500 will not go sideways."

It's a sacred tradition when they can use it to smear a political rival, and a satanic* ritual at all other times.

* As far as the religious right is concerned, anything that isn't explicitly Christian is satanic.

I believe cuts can and should be made.  The value of goodwill gestures such as the Easter Egg roll  exceeds the investment so I don't believe this one is worth being stingy over.  Could easily be covered by senators paying for their own gas for a week and donating the public cost toward the cost of events like this.

The freak outs about the White House cancelling tours have been pretty funny. it's a lovely reminder that a lot of Republicans don't really have any concept of what things cost, and also really aren't interested in cutting anything besides social services and arts/education funding.

That's not how they're funded though. They're being stopped because of cuts to the Secret Service.

true

"Self-guided tours at the White House are not the kind of duplicative and wasteful spending that we should be looking to target and the suspension of these tours reeks of political calculation," said Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., one of several Republican lawmakers who signed a letter to Obama on Thursday criticizing the decision. "Instead of closing the doors of the White House to the American public, the president should look to cut his own wasteful golf outings and frivolous spending."

Because the cost of the secret service during Obama's golf outings is wasteful, but the cost of those same secret service services during white house tours is entirely justified.

yeah. Officers assigned to the tours are being relocated to more important things

You do realize that Presidential security is the highest priority of the Secret Service and that he has that protection no matter where he is and what he's doing, right? I'm not sure why you think stopping his golf games would save any money.

And yes, funding to the Secret Service is being cut as part of this sequester. $136 million according to this post, although you'll have to do your own digging if you want to independently verify that claim: http://www.humanevents.com/2012/09/14/sequestration-report-embassy-se c urity-to-be-cut-by-129-million/

I'm not sure why it's not common sense that in budget cuts, non-essential services go first, and the White House tours ARE non-essential, even if they are important to a lot of people.
