I just hope this young man can survive the process.

He won't. And not because he might be gay, but because he's not an excellent athlete and he looks to be dumber than a bag of bricks if he really fell for the catfish scam.

I hope Te'o isn't gay.  If you want someone to be the first openly gay NFL player, you don't want someone with the intellect of a paper plate.

He'll screw it up.

It's funny because his intellect is pretty much tied to his sexual orientation now. If he's gay, then he obviously made the situation up to deflect having to date women and that takes some work so he could be pretty intelligent. If he's straight and just completely fell for the ruse then yea, he'll probably score a Vince Young on the Wonderlic.

So wait, his fake girlfriend that died that really didn't die was really a beard to begin with?  Is it the going rumor that he's gay?

Don't really know and I don't care if he's gay or not...just curious...and not in a bi sort of way.

I'm not so sure about that. Regardless of his orientation, I there's still going to be a lot of people who think he's exceptionally stupid. If he is straight and he made up the gf scandal for whatever reason, then he's simply pathetic and looks like a dumbass. If he's gay/other and he made up the scandal to cover up his sexual orientation, then it's still pathetic, he still looks like a dumbass, and he shows himself to be remarkably insecure about his situation. Granted, I understand why he would be insecure about it (anyone would be, not to mention he's both a public figure and a Mormon), but would there have been any controversy if he had just been a dude who didn't have a girlfriend? Regardless of whether he's straight or gay, it was a terrible idea and he's made a fool of himself.

So her problem isn't whether he's gay or not, it's that some other player said "some religions won't accept gay people in the locker room?"  She honestly seems to think that that would never happen, and that this is a terribly unfair slam on religion.

Lady, what friggin' world do you live in?

Let's try substituting another word for "gay" in this sentence: "There are some religions that are just not going to accept a black/atheist/Muslim/Asian/ red-haired individual in the locker room." Would any of those be acceptable?

Um... well, yes, because it's true.  It's *happened*.  Seriously, what world does she live in?

Yeah, agreed.   I really want to see an active pro player come out.  But like Jackie Robinson (and, no it won't be AS bad as what he went through)... I hope its an intellegent, well-respected player.  And a very good player at that.

Not sure what you are getting at here. Kluwe is ridiculously smart and being a good punter seems to be just a fluke that has made him wealthy. He is the first to speak out about gay rights among other issues. I have had a few beers at lunch, so if I missed something in your comment, please let me know.

You asked "why has fate determined that this God among men (Chris Kluwe) prefers vagina"

A Fark Handle jokingly answered "why is Chris Kluwe forced by society to prefer vagina"

It was a play on "have to"

Te'o had a bad NC game, this ridiculous catfish scandal, didn't bench press at the combine, and ran a slow 40 he blames on stress and fatigue from the combine. What exactly is it that keeps people saying he's a first round lock? Name recognition?

I don't follow the draft... at least not until the day of... but I do watch PTI and some other shows, most are saying he's going to drop to the second.  At least thats what I've heard as a complete non-expert.

From the moment we published the story people have been asking me if I think Te'o is gay. I don't quite know why. His sexuality is, at best, the sixth- or seventhmost important, intriguing, or relevant part of it. If you keep insisting on the "why" you lose track of the "what" (which is that he grossly exaggerated the nature of his relationship to Lennay Kekua, a person that did not exist).

... so you're saying it would be acceptable? Because that's the question she asked, though it doesn't seem that's the question you think she asked. She's not saying those other things didn't happen, but rather that they are not acceptable, and that discriminating against a gay player (in this case, specifically because of religious reasons) is no more acceptable than discriminating against a player because he is black.

Probably the same reason that ND frequently has years of highly rated recruiting classes that continually finish 7-6.

I'm dreading the draft because of Teo. Listening to Elway and others in the Broncos org and the local media, it just feels like 2010 again. The Broncos are gonna draft him at 28. Why? I have no idea. They don't need a damn LB, especially a dumb, slow, undersized, overrated one. Fark me.

Um...no, her issue seems to be that it's not okay to paint religion with a broad brush.  That's what she says in the beginning of the article.  Eventually she goes on to talk about that it's okay to be gay and all, but if you read the article, she specifically says what prompted her to write the column is somebody saying "religion is a barrier for gays in the locker room."

Here, I'll paste it so you don't have to click the article again:

But this Manti Te'o "controversy" has got me a little riled up, and here's the Chicago Tribune headline that did it: "Ex-Bears QB Miller: Religion a barrier for gays in locker room."
Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jim Miller said, "There are some religions that are just not going to accept a gay individual in the locker room."
Really?

A lot of NFL players are Christian.  That's a broad set of religious standards and beliefs depending on the denomination, but many are not favorable towards having a gay player on your team.  Regardless of faith, there hasn't been an openly gay player in the NFL and if you were not used to that in your work place there would be an adjustment period in which different people would react unpredictably.  Some NFL owners may not want to risk dealing with that adjustment period for their locker room.
