RexTalionis: L.D. Ablo: Animals are better at this than people are.

I don't agree. Animals will abandon their offspring as well, or reject them in some way. In the wild, that means that the offspring dies within hours. In human society, at least, there are mechanisms to prevent that from happening.

Not 100% effective mechanisms, mind you, but we do have an adoption and foster system for children who were given up by their parents.

Coastalgrl: Animals definitely do it better than us humans.

On another mildly related note, to those mothers who thought they wanted children but didn't, stop complaining about your children to me. I don't care. If you didn't really want them in the first place, don't have them. There are some wonderful people out there who would love to have kids and can't.

and those ppl will eventually complain about them too.

We're not unique in that, although we are more consciously systematic. Animals will sometimes foster other animals' offspring, even outside of the species. (Considering that some human parents won't adopt outside of race, that's huge.) We may see this more with domesticated species and otherwise captive animals, but not always.

So there's that.

This is one thing I don't understand about human behaviour.  There ARE systems in place.  One, in particular, is that you can bring a baby to a hospital or a police station, anywhere in the country, and they will take it.  You can walk away with no questions asked.  Yes, there are people who throw their baby off a bridge, or throw it in the garbage.

That just doesn't make sense.

Now as far as animals go...  Some parents are better than others, as pictured in TFA.  Then there are others (I'd say the majority), that totally leave their kids to their own devices before the eggs even hatch.  No parental instinct there  at all.  And evolution has dealt with this in two ways, 1. ridiculouos numbers of offspring, and 2. Excellent instincts right from birth.

I don't know where I'm going with this.  It's almost 5:00.  I'm going home...

I am friends with a "Christian author" who writes books about her struggles being a parent. I just want to punch her in the head. I'd love to have another baby! I don't know what her freaking problem is but she has 100s of followers commenting that they "struggle" being parents. I don't understand why she and her followers continue to have babies if it just makes them so incredibly unhappy.
/sorry about the rant. I think my clock is ticking.
