But Mitt Romney said we HAVE universal health care. Can't you just go to the emergency room for your chemo?

Lost Thought 00: Only in America

Only in America would a person have to pay for necessary and life-saving medical care out-of-pocket, possibly going bankrupt in the process, or else die if you can't afford it.

Pathetic.

There are about thirty reasonable explanations for his being there that one could think of.
Assuming one is capable of thought, of course.

$20,000 will pay for about a week, after taxes.  Welcome to the home of the free and land of the brave.

FTA: Heath's wife, Jenni, was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in October of 2012. The money will be used for mounting medical bills.

More money that's going right in the shiatter.

20k for cancer treatment? Drop in the bucket. Maybe one or two chemo cocktails if he doesn't have insurance (or maybe even if he does).  USA, proving yet again that freedom isn't cheap.

2013-03-07 11:27:18 AM
I would have gone with 'sad' as instead of enjoying the money it will be taken away from him so the rich can get richer.

2013-03-07 11:27:35 AM
Sad: Americans have to rely on dumb luck to pay for (probably a small fraction) of their cancer treatment.

No socialism, eroding liberty, little likelihood of prosperity, US citizenship, a prize in my youth, has become nearly worthless.  I rue the days my ancestors made the mistake of coming here.

$20k ... that should cover maybe a half day of hospital care.

2013-03-07 11:28:11 AM
I don't understand why he would blow this $20k, Obamacare should have his back on this one.

T-Woles tickets are like, 9 bucks.

That's going to pay for using a hospital bed for about 12 hours.

I hope he gets his money's worth out of that.

And the very worst thing is we hold this guy up as a hero instead of throwing the shareholders and board members of private healthcare out their boardroom windows. As  Mao said, "Defenestrate one, terrorize thousands."

Have you seen the UK version of Breaking Bad?  Its just five years of William (they call him William, sounds less American) going to NHS and getting chemotherapy.

wygit: If he needs money for his wife's cancer treatments, WTF is he doing buying basketball tickets?

I dont know if they got in this way, but at Thunder games they give away at least 50 pairs of tickets before every home game.

I was at the game.  At first I thought it was strange that she wasnt running around jumping and going crazy like the husband was after he hit the shot.  Then they zoomed in on her and she had one of the most shocked looks Ive ever seen on anyones face.  I also though to myself, man, she looks like she has cancer.  Kinda sad I was right.

2013-03-07 12:05:37 PM
This never would have happened in Seattle.

2013-03-07 12:07:38 PM
Yeah, I hate to be "that guy", but why is he a hero, exactly? He won some money and is putting it towards his own interests, i.e. not having his wife die.

If he won the money and donated it to cancer research or something, then he'd be a hero.

fonebone77: I dont know if they got in this way, but at Thunder games they give away at least 50 pairs of tickets before every home game.

Yeah, virtually all teams (in all sports) give away quite a few tickets to every game. And lots of season-ticket holders don't make it to every game, and might have friends that they give tickets to on occasion. There are any number of ways to get into sports games for free. You just have to know the right people.

You Must Construct Additional Pylons.: Didn't Obamamessiah make healthcare free?

The opposite, actually. He made it way more expensive for all us regular folks, but he DID succeed in putting billions of new dollars every year in the insurance industry's pocket! So we've got that going for us, which is nice.

2013-03-07 12:18:03 PM
That should take care of about 1/100th of the bill.

I truly don't understand why anyone thinks every horrible thing that could happen to you should be taken care of by the government.
