Right up there with Lennon and McCartney.

Lennon and McCartney were musicians, not heads of states.  Big difference here.

Why not? Flag etiquette is, to the best of my knowledge, not codified in law.

It's not.

/studying law this semester
//veteran

Study harder.

Chapter 1 of Title 4 of the U.S. Code establishes advisory rules for display and care of the flag.  It's a federal law, but one without punitive measures for failing to comply with it.

Per this law, only the President, state governors, or the mayor of Washington DC can order half-masting of the flag.  But lowering it in this instance is speech covered by the 1st amendment.  Still a dick move IMO, but what are ya gonna do?  That's why the 1st amendment kicks ass.

/Not studying law, but proficient in WikiGoogle Fu
//Also a veteran

It goes on to say somewhere -  "Again, the provisions of the Flag Code on flying the flag at half-staff are, like all the Code's provisions, a guide only. They do not apply, as a matter of law, to the display of the flag at half-staff by private individuals and organizations. No federal restrictions or court decisions are known that limit such an individual's lowering his own flag or that make such display alone a form of desecration. "

Chavez was a typical homicidal dictator, and Citgo is a BS company at the head, but locally-owned at the outlet level.  But at some point one needs to ignore government policies, otherwise we all sound like our angry grandparents spluttering about the "rotten Nips and their Jap-crap cars" or the "Krauts and their Nazi-mobiles".

This is one of those situations I go "meh", because boycotting hurts local jobs.

Like buying a car--I only buy cars assembled/made in America.  Like my last couple of Camry's.  I really don't want to get something that does nothing for our country, other than help some paper shuffler at the dealership.  Most Ram pickup trucks, and until 2013, the new Camaros, were foreign-built.

From your link:
*infant mortality dropped from 25 per 1000 (1990) to only 13/1000 (2010);

From the CIA world factbook:
20.18 deaths/1000 live births

13 v. 20 is not a small error. Makes me wonder about the accuracy of the other statistics in your link.

Infant mortality doesn't mean much from country to country, or year to year in the same country, if the rules for determining live birth are not fixed, well known, and applied accurately and honestly across the nation/world.   Of course, don't completely discard the data, but consider the room for shananigans and the motives for shenanigans.  One motive to lie might be to save your job, your life, or make your institution look better than others.  A better picture of health care in a country might be the infant mortality ranking (not rate) averaged with national ranking for Maternal Mortality Rate, a number that is going to be inherently far more difficult to bullshiat.  Life expectancy as a gauge is worse than using mortality - it's not the doctor's fault if the population is a bunch of overweight lazy drug addicts.

(IMO - yours may vary, especially if mine fails to prove a political point important to you that you know you are correct on but just need the data to prove out)

That rule is antiquated and is currently changing back to its original roots.  Tucking the period is a throwback to the early days of moveable type, as an answer to the period getting damaged and being deemed more important than other dangling punctuation.

Since everything in the printing industry has been digital for many years now, pulling the period out to its logical position is gaining traction.

This!

I wish there were Citgo stations in my town so I could boycott them.

I once worked in an office building next to a Four Seasons Hotel. They flew a US, Texas and Canadian flag every day, but one day the US flag got lowered to half mast (for a legit reason, I don't recall why) but left the Canadian and state flags at full mast.

A lot of people noticed and bitterly complained. I'm surprised we didn't burn the hotel to the ground.

If you're going to display the US flag you have a duty to respect it and observe flag etiquette.

I don't think I've ever seen a flag flown at a gas station.

A flag is just a flag. To lose sight of rights such as free speech in the name of wild patriotism is to betray why you are a patriot in the first place. It really makes no sense. Some make the case that America is great because of its freedoms and then set out to limit those freedoms because they don`t agree with the politics of those that exercise them. A strange situation indeed.

That is correct, although I do disagree with them lowering the US flag in this instance.  I think they should have just lowered the Venezuelan flag and left it at that.

If you are against free speech then you do not believe in what that flag stands for. To love that flag is to love the freedom to spit on it. You don`t have to love spitting on the flag, just the right to do so. If you think otherwise then you do not respect the flag. You respect only your version of America. It is not freedom when you demand others think as you do.

A fair point, but many people do not respect flag etiquette even though their intent is not to disrespect it.

If someone wants to burn the flag, that should be protected speech. If you want to make a pair of pants out of a flag, well, that's your right but it is disrespectful and you should be criticized for it.

There's an upside down flag in the movie Easy Rider and it's not the one on Capt. America's leather jacket. Kind of an interesting piece of trivia about the movie. I don't know if it was flown upside down on purpose.

I've seen a couple of breaches of flag etiquette done by a state:
