Between a corrupt US Senator, a Dominican prostitute, and Tucker Carlson, its Tucker Carlson who is the dirty sleazebag.

I'd call Tucker a whore, but I have too much respect for prostitutes.

Well, Tucker Carlson would seem to be the dirtiest and sleaziest, due to the blatant hypocrisy.

That article doesn't contradict the post article at all.  It just notes Carlson's twitter comment.

This whole Menedez story is very interesting. International intrigue, allegations of corruption, big money buying influence, potential underground elements. It could be a book.

Not much of anything. The only thing that it points out is that the lawyer involved has connections with a former politician with an axe to grind with Menendez, suggesting this wasn't the Daily Caller who fabricated the story but rather were being lied to as well (granted, their adamance that WaPo is lying still means they're still being idiots.)

I have to ask:  Where the hell are you getting that from?  Or do you assume all prostitution is also human trafficking?  The article I read is simply a hockey-sock full of shiat allegations and speculation.  I even followed along with yesterday's discussion, can't say I saw that.

As an aside, can you guys (Americans, not you specifically) please lighten up on sex?  Seriously.

The original accusation was for sex with under-aged prostitutes.  There are many names for this, human trafficking being one.  Of course, it could be complete bullshiat but that in itself is a big deal that a news source would tarnish a sitting Senator with this type of allegation.

I think human trafficking is evil.  I think sex is great.  I don't even have any issues with prostitution in safe environments willing participants.  That is not what happens for the most part in DR.

Well you should be outraged that Menendez was taking bribes in the form of free private flights to DR.  As for the rest of it, I agree that it is hard to know what to pissed of with.  Either a disgusting and untrue hit piece from the Daily Caller or a Senator guilty of effectively statutory rape.

well, what he said was that he was so busy he forgot to pay the guy back. Bob stays at the guy's house on several occasions on vacations to the DR. Friend buys a natural gas conversion company, Bob supports legislation providing tax credits for diesel to nat gas conversion. Friend buys a security company with a dormant contract to inspect Dominican ports. Bob pushes the subcommittee to force the DR to uphold the contract. See, he was too busy using his influence to coincidentally coincide with his buddy's interests to remember to pay that buddy back for private jet flights. Honest mistake.

If it smells like shiat, it is shiat.  He could argue that he pushed the legislation based on xyz in the public interest.  Really farking lame bullshiat but plausible deniability is intact.  No doubt direct remuneration was involved but he didn't get caught on that.  Taking the free private jet flights without reporting it, though seemingly less serious, is the undeniable smoking gun.  He should do time but if he isn't forced to resign, it is a travesty.

the nat gas legislation could be couched in public interest terms. Demanding sudden enforcement of an existing contract after your friend (who is an eye doctor and doesn't know shiat about running security companies) buys the company which is party to that contract as public interest? Suddenly he wants DR ports inspected for drugs and this Miami eye doctor is just the man for the job? Dubious.

it was but that was still the initial accusation which is what MSR was discussing. Ganja wondered why this is a story. Because a Senator was accused of at least facilitating sex trafficking. Sounds like a good reason to talk about something, even though it has been disproved

I agree with most of what you're saying, but I didn't see accusations of human trafficking.  I normally hesitate to automatically equate under-age prostitution with human trafficking (both are deplorable), I see them as different things.  There certainly is significant overlap, but there's a reason each gets it's own charge in NA courtrooms.

To repeat what I said elsewhere, not trying to take shots, just wanted to know where the charge was coming from.

Well you might be right.  The Washington Post released an article yesterday seemingly making the whole thing a hoax.  Dailly Caller claiming that WaPo is debunking from statements from the wrong women.  I'm leaning to hoax but I don't know because the WaPo piece has some major holes in it.

There are definitions of human trafficking as it relates to prostitution.  Basically, forcing people (regardless of age)  to prostitute themselves by various means (indentured servitude, threats) is human trafficking and is horrible I hope you can agree.  Prostitution by consenting adults is not something I consider immoral but has its own problems.

which we won't find out by ignoring it. The investigation itself is noteworthy. This is a US Senator accused of farking underaged girls at the multi-million dollar pad of his friend/contributor with him he shares a peculiar parallelism when it comes to interests. The hooker angle doesn't seem to have legs but it's a story.

yes. Maybe not the most common definition of it but if there are young girls working as prostitutes, chances are they've been coerced and in the US we don't regard them as capable of consenting anyway so regardless of whether they wanted to do it, it's still coercion.

I certainly agree human trafficking is horrible, and having spent far too much time in central Africa, I know very well just how horrible it can be.  I also agree that prostitution and human trafficking are frequently related, I just distinguish between them as the correspondance is something less than 100%.  As an example, there are a large number of street kids in the city I live in, many under 18, more than a few supplement their income as prostitutes.  Human trafficking is not involved in this very sad situation.  I'd be inclined to guess the vast majority of under-age sex workers in DR are forced into it by circumstance and family, rather than human traffickers, though I'm far to lazy to actually do the research.  Adult sex workers are a completely different topic of discussion.

Oh, and I thought the entire "those aren't the prostitutes we were talking about, yours are 24, our underage hookers were 23" defence of the story kind of cleared up a lot of the confusion for me.

Ain't political discussions fun!

Cheers.
