Dick Gozinya: Get used to it people. This is what happens when you militarize your police forces. I bet all three of those cops are ex military. Years of brainwashing them into believing everyone and everything is a threat, coupled with hyper-agressive responses to percieved threats results in this kind of shiat happening. Like Rambo said, "you cant just turn it off."

Benjamin Orr: enik: Why yes, I'm sure there are no other missing details in this story.

Please let us know what details could have been missed that would allow the police to beat someone as badly as they beat this guy.

If he didn't "calmly" ask to see a warrant, was confrontational, and upon requests to calm down he refused to obey and upon trying to restrain him he truly was grasping for the officer's weapon? Why is it when a civilian makes a statement against police it is infallible, yet when the police respond, it is always a lie? Bias much? You can make assumptions and it is clear that excessive force was used, but after reading TFA, there is way more to the story. Do you really believe that he calmly asked to see a warrant? Excuse me kind sir, could you produce for me a warrant post haste? I am not prematurely defending the cops here or taking sides, but there sounds like a lot of missing pieces and a lot of lying going on here.

While it troubles me to the core that this happened, I can't help but wonder what kind of idiots they have in administration that after paying out $800K to get out of this, that at least one of those involved is still on the force.  Some people, cops included, are just psychopaths, so things like this are going to happen from time to time.  It's tragic, but I think you have to deal with it an move on. But you don't continue to employ people in positions of authority when they've proven that they can't be trusted with that authority.  Something bad will happen again because of that decision.

But at least they won`t be able to use the excuse "We thought he was going for his gun" anymore.

We don`t have this problem here in the UK, where your `horror` scenario is happening i.e. cops have guns and the public don`t. Do you know what effect that has? The police don`t go crazy if they think you may have a weapon and beat the shiat out of you `just in case` and they can`t use that as an excuse so less police are violent. People don`t pull guns on cashiers `just because` etc etc etc

It`s strange but in countries where guns are restricted for the public NONE of the outcomes predicted by gun nuts happen.

You know, it`s almost as though they lie to keep their guns...

RTFA-- they charged him with going for one of the cops' guns. They never claimed he had a gun. And this BS charge would work just fine in ol' Blighty, despite your enlightened gun laws.

At least one of the police in this case are proven liars.

When that guy was caught lying on tape, all the other officers inittially backe dup his story.  That throws the entire depts honestly into question in my book, so yes I am going to believe an average guy before them.

So do you think you have to beat somebody that bad because they are being aggressively vocal? Even if he did go after an officers gun the sustained beating that he would have had to suffer to get those injuries would in noway be necessary to stop him.

This is why DHS needs to provide more armored vehicles to state an local police Depts.

Aggressive criminals attacking them with their faces is happening more and more.    Surplus US Army MRAPs are being provided now for the safety of officers.    Thank god we have DHS to provide these protections.

"Justice Department reps chose Friday at 6:30 p.m. to inform...."

See,   once again the Justice Dept. thinks of the publics safety and the safety off the thin Blue Line at  the same time.    Release that information at the right time.

I don't know why you think our police would stop abusing their power. Those abuses of power have nothing to do with guns. It it's not a gun they'll just say they though they saw a knife. Or just that he lunged for them. They're already violating the law, abusing their power, abusing a fellow human being and lying... You think any of that changes because less of us law abiding citizens are allowed to own guns?

The problem isn't that ordinary citizens are armed... the problem is that our police officers are effectively largely unaccountable. That and our political class has slowly eviscerated the bill of rights over the last few decades in vain quests to fight vain neverending "wars" on concepts. Banning private ownership of guns does NOTHING to address any of that and would have exactly a 0.0% effect on police brutality.

That's just...wow.  I mean, the cop was stupid in the first place trying whatever odd takedown he was going for (I think he was trying a hip throw--he moved his right leg in--but at arms length?).  A group that size and you decide to "attempt" to restrain one of them without any backup?

In California, the police were looking for a big, black ex-cop driving a silver pickup, so there first reaction was to shoot up a blue pickup with two little hispanic women inside.   Makes sense, they could have been a large black man pretending to be two little hispanic women.

Here's my issue with it.  A college kid that is smart enough to ask for a warrant to search the vehicle might take a step or two forward, but I doubt he would be dumb enough to get "all up in dat pigz grill," especially when outnumbered by an openly aggressive force.

He took a step forward and ran into a fist for being uppity.  Then, after a few minutes of beating, he remembered he had one of those nifty invisible guns and went for it.

So you've got nothing.

I don't care if he was confrontational or didn't lick their boots quickly enough. Even if he went for a gun they had no right to beat him like that.

I don't have the link to the article from the other day, but what about the guy that ran from the cops, then gets rammed in his driveway and a single office unloads 40+ rounds.  At no point do any of the other cops suggest he might want to, you know, conserve ammunition.  That crap's expensive these days.

The Justice Department, guided by the FBI, is usually pretty good at jumping at the chance to level civil rights violations when the have the evidence. Apparently, they were okay with the statements that they received in this case. Cops can lie, but in this case I don't believe the statements of the accuser any more than the cops side.
