If eating delicious bacon kills you, I don't want to live!

2013-03-07 04:24:53 AM
Next they'll tell us that eating nothing but chocolate is unhealthy. What do these so called experts know?

2013-03-07 06:50:11 AM
That study seems pretty comprehensive, but I wonder what would happen if you controlled for nitrates and other preservatives. Or controlled for fresh vs. cured meats. Also vegetable and fruit consumption as part of an overall diet. I think the real finding here is that processed foods aren't great for you which isn't exactly earth-shattering news. I'm not sure it matters which kind of processed foods you are consuming, it's that you  aren't consuming fresh food. The people who eat a lot of processed whatever aren't eating much produce or getting fiber and minerals and vitamins from their diet.

I would really love to see a study of the diets of healthy people. I am willing to bet a quite large sum of my small coins in my pocket that most of them are consuming a lot of fresh foods and that they also have a genetic predisposition toward being healthy. The Irish, for instance, lived really well off potatoes until the famine. Most of that seems to have been genetic.

Regardless, it makes sense to try to consume the best quality food you can afford.

Hey science, we get it.  We all know how to live healthy lives.  You can stop researching that.

This study is false. The concept of "too much bacon" does not exist, ergo it based on a false premise. For shame, science, for shame.

Too much anything will kill you, which is why it's called "too much"

I said the same thing to my mom when I was 5. I think she's in on the conspiracy, though.

You can never have too much bacon. Too crispy, yes. Too floppy, yes. Too much? There is not such a concept.

It's a proven fact that eating too little bacon was the reason for the rise of Nazi Germany. You don't want to murder Jews and Gypsys, do you?

Wait. Some of you don't answer that question.

Jews don't eat bacon.  You're saying it was the Jews' fault?  You came up with that all on your own?  Are you sure Hitler didn't do even a little of your research for you?

Not true. You can't die from eating "too much" tofu, because you're not really living.

That would be good wrapped in real bacon.

So many things wrong with this article.

1) They group ground beef in together with bacon and sausage.  Ground beef is NOT a cured / processed meat, comparing it to bacon is like comparing apples and oranges, especially since most of these studies focus on the nitrates / nitrites in processed meat, of which ground beef would have none.

2) "But a small amount of red meat also seems to benefit health, because it contains important nutrients and minerals, they add. "  Dumbasses.  Last I checked, pork products are NOT considered red meat.  They don't have nearly the iron and mineral content that beef does.  Again, false comparisons.

So, perhaps processed meat provides a happy environment for some pathogen and that environment is not normally available in unprocessed meat ... or the pathogen is in all meat but it is somehow preserved or released by the processing... or perhaps the processing itself creates the pathogen like how your liver makes methanol EVEN WORSE by its processing... so maybe processed meat spends more time in the "cooked" state and there is something about that that is a problem...

2013-03-07 10:34:33 AM
Too much bacon is a concept akin to a large Scotch.

The article states that if everyone limited themselves to less than 20g of bacon per day, 3% of premature deaths could be avoided.  WOW!!! A whole 3%!!!!!  So the whole world needs to live a life of deprivation so that 3% of premature deaths (not all deaths, not fully mature deaths, just premature deaths) could (NOT would) be avoided.

I'd bet that if no one engaged in non-monogamous sex ever again, the percentage of deaths caused by AIDS would be reduced by one hell of a lot more than 3%.

I'd bet that if no one ever drove an automobile faster than 3.5 mph (normal walking speed), the percentage of deaths by automobile would be reduced by a lot more than 3%.

This. Pork fats themselves aren't bad for you from what I've read.

Anyways evrn in yesterday's berry thread we had people claiming a high berry diet shortens your lifespan.

I want to pay twins to do nothing but eat specific diets while staying active. It might cost a lot, but all these correlational studies are getting us nowhere.

Yea we have learned stuff like eggs and red meat aren't the devil, but even when we thought they were anyone who followed the health guidelines of the time was pretty healthy.

I also hate the jack lelanes out there for selling their good genes wrapped in a package of a ridiculous diet plan. These guys aren't outliving us because the stripped the fiber out of fruits and didn't feel like chewing. But I know the genetically blessed will ndver stop making a living off tatgetting folks like me for snake oil.

Of course, I still won a type of genetic lotto - born in a first world country. So I suppose I can't biatch too much :)

I've gotten terrible food allergies. I've literally lived off of Bacon, Mexican coke ( cane sugar not corn syrup ) and sweet potatoes for about 6 months. It sucks. That's about the only things I can eat and not get sick to.

I tried uncured bacon, it nearly killed me. Apparently they used celery seed to season it and I'm super allergic to celery, bastards.

I'm doing a ton of immunotherapy trying to get it under control. Not worried about cancer, worried about malnutrition or starving to death. Can't take any vitamins, react to them too.

/Hormel black label thick cut is the best store bought bacon there is.
//cooked low and slow in a pan
///Even with copious amounts of bacon, life sucks :(

It's been done, albeit not rigorously, and the results aren't surprising.  Fresh ingredients, and by "fresh" I mean "picked the same day from fields they tend themselves"  -- they're not all farmers per se, but every home at least has a veggie garden.  A big source of calories is legumes, whether it's chickpeas or soybeans.  They don't abstain from vices altogether, but alcohol and meat are consumed in moderation.  One other notable difference is in how active these people are -- they're renovating homes and throwing parties and farking each other at 80, 90, 100 years old.

There was no silver bullet, but processed foods are as absent from their lifestyles as the rat race.

You're supposed to eat it, not smoke it.  And you can't cure what's already dead.
