That's still pretty cool.

That was some sick piloting of that heli

1.  The show sucks and needs to die already.
2.  That opening shot is cool.
3.  Probst has a reasonably large pair for being willing to step off that helo onto the top of that spire.
4.  The stunt guy who climbed the spire has a larger pair.
5.  The show sucks and needs to die already.

No.

2013-03-07 08:44:53 AM
f****************ck that.

2013-03-07 08:44:59 AM
Who ?

2013-03-07 08:46:19 AM
You would think that they would have given him a darker pair of shorts to wear for that shot.

2013-03-07 08:46:31 AM
That pilot is 110% pro.

2013-03-07 08:47:19 AM

katerbug72: f****************ck that.

I couldn't agree more.

2013-03-07 08:47:26 AM
The show: meh.
The scenery and opportunity to work outside in the exotic locales: Yes!

I'd rather be in the tech crew than on the show.

2013-03-07 08:47:31 AM
I auditioned several times to be on Survivor.  But then each season the 'contestants' became less and less 'real people' and more "actors and models and minor celebrities"
I then realized I'll never have a shot and I gave up.

But I enjoyed making some of my videos.

Having said that, I would have never climbed out of that helicopter

2013-03-07 08:48:36 AM
No.

But I did wonder why fark's nothing but viral marketing and paid click links. Apparently that damn squirrel's got a crack habit it needs to feed.

2013-03-07 08:49:22 AM
Climbing out of the heli looked tough. Getting back in looked rougher-- you're stepping on to a moving platform. I would have be scared poopless.

2013-03-07 08:50:36 AM
Nope, made my palms sweat just watching that.

2013-03-07 08:50:58 AM
How did he balance himself up there, no seriously I cannot fathom how I would hold myself up there while also carrying two massively large brass balls.

2013-03-07 08:51:43 AM
I was betting it was a blue screen trick.

katerbug72: f****************ck that.

Yea, this.

/Still, pretty damn cool.

That was an amazing "video isn't available in your region" video... it truly opened my eyes....

"Jeff, we need a big opening shot. We need you at the top of a rock spire doing the opening. You can just climb up there and we will get the shot from the Wescam."
"I like the idea, but I am not going to climb a rock spire."
"Ok, you can just hop out of the helicopter onto the top of the spire, do the lines and then hop back in. Easy."
"...."

Balancing on top of that rock with rotorwash no less.

Why did they leave the safety guy on top of the rock at the end and make him climb down?  They must not like him cause otherwise they would have given him a ride down instead.

Climbing up spires similar to that is rather heart dropping. Hell that heli work seems even more ballsy. Did a bit of climbing similar to that up in the Needles of Black Hills South Dakota. A "Panoramic Fall" was how I described it to myself.

As for the Survivor thing, I honestly think it would be a much better show premise if they took the items from Robinson Crusoe and set up individuals in a similar situation. Initial supplies would need to be gotten from a submerged underwater drop replicating a sunken frigate. They'd need to last a certain amount of time without assistance (months?) to win and none of this Lord of the Flies voting Piggy off the island mock drama.
Always liked man against nature tales like Crusoe and The Hatchet

Great...

I'll sit back at base camp, having cocktails with the native maidens while Jim captures grizzly bears with his bare hands.

So they put the guys life in jeopardy for an opening shot that could have been faked, and for less money that the cost of a helicopter and who-knows how much insurance... how stupid...

Compared to "traditional" shows, reality shows are dirt cheap. That opening cost less to make than some shows spend on coke in a week.

That was pretty farkin amazing...
Probst must have a HELLUVA life insurance/workman's comp type policy with CBS.
Normally, "stars" are not put into perilous positions...that's what stunt lookalikes and green screens are for.
Impressed.

Because they didn't want to split the mound of coke that they promised Jeff for doing the scene

Me too, I don't know who or what this is but assumed it was something that would be faked.  All I get is a message:

The irony is that this is the only REAL part of this show. Everything else is, in fact, faked.

That's why those old movie stars did all those Love Boat episodes, no matter how bad the show was, off camera it was party party party.

Stan Checketts did this - climbed to the tallest point of his company's rides.  Until OSHA stopped him.  Pictures of him on top of Cedar Point's Power Tower and other rides was cool back then.

The quality of the show is the result of spending 95% of the budget on the opening sequence.

I would guess weight is the real reason. Pilot, director, Jeff, cameraman + equipment is a lot of weight for that heli (of that size) to handle.

2013-03-07 10:13:02 AM
I do not have large enough brass balls to have been able to stop out of that helicopter.

2013-03-07 10:15:02 AM
We used to call this the "One Skid Pick-up" back in my Huey days. You always counted down the extra weight coming on the skid to the pilot because unlike this scenario the pilot couldn't see what you were doing in the main door.

Ahh, helicopters.

Remind me to tell you about the time I took a 20,000 volt static discharge through my scrotum.
