I used to think those gun buy-backs were total bullshiat, until I got a look at most of the guns they get and destroy. A whole lot of them are broken, dangerous relics that you, I, or any responsible gun owner would destroy too. I took an old, broken shotgun to one a few years ago, and saw heaps and piles of broken, crap hardware - and I am really glad that most of THOSE guns are off the street.

Though to be fair, it's hard to set off ammo by crushing. Especialy if it's in the chamber of a gun which will absorb a lot of the crushing energy, and even if it pops, the barrel has probably been warped by the point, so the bullet probably won't exit, or exit at low velocity, and then you have all the other guns in the way to absorb the bullet strike. So Feinstein probably won't be hit with a bullet as she dances around the pile in glee.

/but one can always hope.

Not that I'm in favor of any anti-gun nonsense, but the question should be how best do we spend police monies if the goal is to enhance public safety.

Bullshiat guns that don't fire make a good threat to shoo the burglars away but have no teeth.
Why would anyone want to remove those? ...at our own expense, even?
Leave it in grandma's closet where it might do some good.

We also buy up those gang owned guns at higher than bluebook value, giving criminals a net profit.  Leave them to bear the entire expense of rearming when their weapons wear out.

You'd do better overall to take that buyback money and hire another cop or two.

/If you actually make the community safe, you can reduce gun sales by up to 60%.
/...Of course ifpeople are safe, no one cares about gun sales.
/Since crime gives politicians authority, you have to wonder if it isn't too profitable for them to keep the problem rather than fix it.

I hope you are joking. An inherently defective firearm is dangerous in a myriad of different ways, and people shouldn't have them around. What if this putative "burglar" prefers to avoid violence, but comes strapped just in case, and you pull a gun that won't shoot on him? What if, instead of failing to fire, it blows up in your face?
I really, really hope you are being facetious.
I really hate both the extremes in this debate. The gun hater who thinks guns are tools of the devil, and the gun lover who thinks they are the heart and soul of American freedom are equally insane. They are tools, for f**ks sake - like a goddamn shovel - and if you love or hate a tool, and invest moral value in it, you are a lunatic.

Or, to quote Mark Twain:

Don't meddle with old unloaded firearms. They are the most deadly and unerring things that have ever been created by man. You don't have to take any pains at all with them; you don't have to have a rest, you don't have to have any sights on the gun, you don't have to take aim, even. No, you just pick out a relative and bang away, and you are sure to get him. A youth who can't hit a cathedral at thirty yards with a Gatling gun in three-quarters of an hour, can take up an old empty musket and bag his mother every time at a hundred. Think what Waterloo would have been if one of the armies had been boys armed with old rusty muskets supposed not to be loaded, and the other army had been composed of their female relations. The very thought of it makes me shudder.

I thought it meant heroin.
Florida has a real problem with prescription meds, meth and bathsalts so it's nice to see them busting up weed pipes. It's an easy bust due to the relaxed state of the people using it and the smell that it gives off.

It is, but if  people cared about such things they they'd either take care of their guns or visit a gun shop and buy a new weapon when the old one starts looking haggard. They can also sell or dispose of their old hardware, through the gun shop.
The store owner is a better judge of what a gun is worth than some do-goody in a buyback. He can sort the valuables from the trash and it costs me nothing.
They shouldn't have buybacks, they should have "gun store" and "gun safety" awareness days.

My question to you is if the government should be responsibility to save you from your poor judgement?
I say it isn't.  If you've got a neglected or non firing weapon and you try to bluff a crook, its on  your own head if they call that bluff.

Wouldn't it be better to spend the "collect broken guns" money on preventing crime to begin with?
That way fewer people have to bluff, fewer get away with robbing, no one has to waste money on scrap metal and everyone keeps their rights.

We all win and no longer have to gamble with public safety.

If guns that were defective, or in the hands of the unfit could only harm the user, maybe - but probably not. But as a general principle, it fails to meet my standard of common sense. Should the government refrain from "protecting me from myself" by forbidding me to drive an automobile with defective brakes, or steering? Should it refrain from forbidding me to build a dangerous, defective house?
Civilization is here. Our time in the jungles and the frontier is history. I am all in favor of gun rights - but no civilized society can hold any right to be absolute and unconditional, and no civilized society does.
That's reality - and arguments attempting to circumvent that reality are futile, and will fail.
And frankly, Waysouth - if you are one of those who insists that there can be no form of gun control, and that ant attempt to regulate the use of these potentially dangerous tools is an impermissable step onto some imaginary "slippery slope", you are one of the extremists at the far ends of the debate that I don't waste any more time talking to than I do the gun-grabber who thinks everyone's guns should be taken away.

If you own a house or a car, but fail to maintain them, you can be sued or fined for whatever unintentional damages result.
If the government says "hey, I'll give you cash for that clunker because its for the good of us all!", What you have is the makings of a bad idea. People who probably shouldn't drive won't make good on money given to them for a wreck. They should dispose of it on their own dime.

For the good of us all I accept that the government should run a PSA to remind you that machines need to be kept responsibly. Teach a child to avoid playing with dangerous things and you'll save their lives more reliably than by trying to collect all the dangerous things.
...but paying people for broken things is only going to waste cash that could have been better spent elsewhere.

I know that an increase in cops, education, or other services will create a known benefit. I am not so sure that a buy back does anything good.
Why pay for an unknown activity when a known activity gives me more of what I want?

"Dear america: Dispose of your gun at the gun store." Is free advice and I can spend the savings on more cop man hours, proven to reduce crime.

Buybacks do have a known benefit - they take guns off the street that are defective, and very often in the hands of the unfit. They also cost little, and violate no ones rights.
But I have to be honest at this point -  I cannot engage in an intelligent dialogue with every single person who is in this debate.  I can't dialogue with extremists.
By contrasting example, the other day I attempted to engage my elected representative Diane Feinstein in a discussion about her support of the ridiculous "assault weapons" ban. Whoever responded to me during the exchange never responded to any actual thing I said - the law was anti-gun, that made it good, and if I didn't like it I was naive and foolish. It was like talking to a wall. A wall that looks remarkably similar to the wall you throw up when anyone suggests ANY form of gun control or amelioration.
The time I spent talking to her was wasted time. How much time should I waste talking to you?

jso2897: way south: squibbits: Wait until Dianne Frankenstein's gang does it with guns... knowing how stupid they are, they will leave some of the guns loaded with rounds in the chambers.

Gun banners do these kinds of stunts all the time.
Its their way of saying "look at me, I can destroy peoples property while doing nothing to solve their problems!".

If it all works out the same, people who make pipes are the only ones who profit.

OT, but gun buy backs are a great way to dump a gun used in a murder, too.

Meh. I don't think they are a huge deal, one way or the other. Frankly, anyone who gets upset about them needs a better hobby.
I'm tired of the hysterical extremists. This issue will not be decided by the Diane Feinsteins and Wayne LaPierres of the world. It will be decided by the rational 75% whose views lie somewhere in the middle ground - by grownups who are capable of reason and compromise.
I'm bored, and finished with this .

I bring my own bowl dumb asses. Seriously. Why would I buy a new piece in the over priced tourist trap that is Fort Lauderdale?   So I can still pick up a vaporizer or a volcano or a wooden pipe?  What a waste of perfectly good glass. I guess cops are very bored after they caught all those murders, rapists, copper thieves and child molesters. Nothing else better to do except bother people that sit mostly and buy food supporting the local economy that pay taxes that pay the police?

I've always thought the term 'dope' was slang for heroin.

Don't you guys realize that two weeks ago they took down a grandma who was taking care of herself.

It's motivated the legalization effort in Florida, there's local speculation that we'll be the next to legalize because the
cops took down a granny with ALS.

This is them turning up their side of the war, happened in every state that's legalized.. The cops raise the bar right
before the votes go through in the hopes of making a political statement, they don't want to be unemployed by not
having enough harmless people to arrest and harass.

The original meaning of 'dope' is cure all.  Boron and arsenic are dopants for silicon.  They provide the charge-carriers that allow it to conduct.  The use of the term to refer to recreationals is sardonic rather than specific.

You are free to spend your Internets as you please, No ones paying for our time here.

I've never shied away from being called an extremist for my views on guns. But it's not that I believe everyone should be armed, it's just a simple fact that they will be if they choose.
Knowing that it is their choice, there is no reason we should pay for the upkeep, replacement, or disposal of anyones gun. You are responsible for your things. You are free to turn weapons in to the police or the pawn shop at anytime.
We shouldn't have to pay a cash reward to put on a display like in tfa.
That sort of thing is is to the benefit of a few politicians, not to the community.

Please lay off the weed porn. I am too broke to smoke right now, and you are making me drool.

Sorry to hear that but weed porn is the reason weed threads exist. Buck up and figure out how to move somewhere you can grow or make a better class of friends. Get to know some hippies. Figure out a skill you can barter.

That word you are using. I don't think it means what you think it means.

I'd like 'Arrogant, Self-Righteous, Assholes' for $1,000 Alex.

Wow, sometimes things like this shine a light on the dirty, dark Drug War!  I'm impressed that 70% of Floridians are in favor of medical cannabis, but it is the politicians and the lobby money that will continue to go against the will of the people, against the Fourth and Fifth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution and against personal choice and responsibility!
