Do UN peacekeepers ever actually do anything?

This is why I roll my eyes any time the media does a story fawning over the Syrian "freedom fighters." We've seen how this story plays out before, and yet our naive state department thinks its a swell idea to sign us up to the cause. Without even knowing what the cause is.

ShawnDoc: The UN Peacekeepers did absolutely nothing as they weren't allowed to shoot unless fired upon first.

It's all in interpretation and conduct. They could have fired back, the ossifers chose not to. There is not a f*cking court in the world that would have convicted them. They just didn't have the farking balls toy do the right thing.

Same with Rwanda.

cman: This could be a win for the rebels

Sure, taking UN peacekeepers is a shiatty thing to do. However, it will give them more attention than only fighting governmental forces. It might force the UN to actually deal with what is happening in Syria rather than doing only token actions.

Right now the rebels are riding high on people not paying so close attention to them.

I don't think the rebels want to be exposed to be what they are. Jihadists. They're sponsored by the usual suspects, think Al Quida etc.

Assad isn't a saint, but you know, he just more the Saddam Hussein kind of villain, rather than a religious lunatic.

My tinfoil Sense is tingling here. Is it possible these goons are actually pro-Govt. forces posing as rebels?

Because within weeks of finally getting US support and then they'd pull something like this? NOOOOOOOO ONE is that stupid!

It's a tough situation to be in, really. I mean, every US agency wants to see Assad overthrown, but they are terrified of arming what is eventually going to be a full blown civil war when the command and control structure collapses. It's Iraq all over again with tribal factions eventually remaking the society and settling old scores.

It's going to get even more brutal when the Syrian Army vaporizes.

It's ironic because they have been funding the Lebanese unpleasentness and now they are going to suffer the same fate.

I think they don't quite grasp the situation. They should say they captured 20 UN peace-keepers and threaten to RELEASE them until Syrian government forces withdraw from their village.
