Funny how the Republican message turned around. At first it was "Obama'a Sequester." He owned it. It was his idea. All the trouble it causes is his fault. But nobody bought that, they still blame the Republicans, so now it's "Oh the sequester is nothing. You won't even notice it."

Often these studies result in results which demonstrate preventative care and education prevent billions of HIV infection support care and impact to the economy.

Getting the work out in the 80's about condoms and how the virus spread was one of the greatest positive impacts in both saving lives AND healthcare dollars by reducing infection rates via education and free condoms.

Yes we spent fraction of pennies on the dollar for those preventative efforts.

If this helps prevent navy guys going to TJ and getting a disease that kills them or hans long term health costs and drains tri-care in the process, $550M is a drop in the bucket.

I don't know if it's coincidence or pure poetic justice that each time someone brings up one of these "wasteful" studies lately, the smallest bit of inspection shows it to be a pretty good idea - Rand Paul with the fish, Palin and the fruit flies, etc.

Yup--just because the infections happen in Mexico doesn't mean it's not Americans being infected.

Too bad that it is true.  Repeat after me.  There are no "cuts" only reductions in the amount of increase.  Every department will be spending more money next year than they spent this year.

From TFA

"The real question should be raised as to why taxpayer money is used to finance programs such as $550,000 for UCSD research into 'safer sex intervention for male clients of female sex workers in Tijuana' when workers are being forced to furlough or take pay cuts and national defense is being reduced,"

While I can't speak to this particular one, the majority of of the budget of your typical NSF, CDC, NASA, etc. grant actually goes towards employing scientists.   By cutting these grants you would, in fact, be laying off a bunch of scientists doing rather important work.

/Currently waiting to see if the NASA grant that keeps me employed is one of the ones that will be axed.

Because increasing the absolute amounts is unnecessary. $1 today goes just as far a $1 30 years ago, right?

It's a product of the fact that these are competitive grants reviewed by actual scientists and funded on the basis of scientific merit. This isn't Congressionally designated pork, this is serious scientific research reviewed by and funded by people like the NSF and CDC. The silly stuff doesn't make it through the process.

And in fact I just got finished today convening a peer review committee to fund research grants. They look very, very closely at budgets. A lot of it goes to student support and training.

Benjimin_Dover:

While I'm not familiar with the details of the funding pie for all federal agencies, I can assure you that for, say, the NSF and NASA, the impending cuts are very real and people (in these cases scientists who are paid with grant money) will lose their jobs while services that you take for granted and possibly don't even realize you depend on will be compromised.

2013-03-06 08:57:25 PM
The point of 'across the board' was it hurt everyone evenly.  That's why they weren't called targeted cuts.  It was supposed to ensure both sides stayed at the table, so, it's disingenuous to turn around and complain that your special interest is being cut.

There certainly are wasteful grants.  There are also wasteful military programs.  There are people who waste their money would could tighten their belts a bit for a tax hike.  There are also a lot of 'wasteful' programs that actually pay for themselves, indirectly.  Sometimes it's in reduced STD rates.  Sometimes it's in increased sales tax at local businesses because the government gave some matching funds for activities that got people out of the house.  Sometimes it's as simple as making life bearable so people get involved in their communities.  Sometimes it's blowing up a tent that insurgents in Afghanistan bought for $20 with a multi-million dollar piece of munitions.  Across the board cuts hurt us all.  Taxing the rich and their off-shore bank accounts?  That might not hurt most of us so much.

Whenever good things happen, it's despite Obama. Whenever bad things happen, it's because of Obama.  And whenever Very Bad Things happen (the kind of Things that are so Very Bad that the words need to be capitalized), it's because Obama personally made it happen.

Doesn't matter if it's war, gas prices, the quality of the food in your fridge or your favorite sports team's winning or losing streak -- it if't good, it's despite Obama and if it's bad, it's because of Obama.

You seem like you've got more than two brain cells to rub together, so I'm surprised you don't know this already. If you need more information, turn to Fox News and they'll keep you infromed.

As soon as Obama starts a war in a country which poses absolutely no threat whatsoever to the US because of unresolved daddy issues and/or to make is already obscenely wealthy oil baron buddies even richer, fabricates intel to justify the beating of the war drums and compromises an entire network of CIA operatives because that network's top spy's spouse dared to question the validity of said fabricated intel, I'll agree with you.

Yep.  I totally agree.

Creation of the TSA, the Patriot act... it's all BS.

The invasion of Iraq was probably the single biggest fiasco the US government has engaged in in my lifetime.  Well, that and the "Global War on Terror."
