Not sure how tax abatements will matter, if there is no job to pay for the other expenses.  Sure tax breaks are nice, however not having the jobs to support their families, many won't be able to return to Detroit.  Now if many moving to Cleveland are the same people building the new residential properties, then that seems like a little short term planning.  After awhile those jobs will cease.  Now if Cleveland has some new industry planting itself there, then good for them.

Why don't they just hire Drew Carey to be their spokesman? He can try to lure people in with nostalgia over his old comedy show, were he yelled "OHIO" in the credits.

A misleading/false headline, on my Fark?
Yeah Cleveland sucks, stay away everybody.

2013-03-06 10:23:47 PM
Sounds like a good idea but do they offer the tax abatements on real houses? Its pretty pointless if it is only on condos/townhomes.

2013-03-06 10:24:58 PM
Chattanooga is doing the same thing for software engineers to buy homes in specific neighborhoods.  Of course, the tax breaks don't make up for what you could make working in a more tech-centric city, and more broadly what you give up by tying yourself to a mortgage in a city with a dearth of those type of jobs.

I hear the outdoorsy perks of the city are nice though.

2013-03-06 10:25:12 PM
Can't they just hang onto the logos, names and records of the families in Cleveland and call the people when they move to a new city a brand new "expansion" group?

I actually think he's the devil in disguise for Cleveland.   What he made as an inside joke for Clevelandars to have a self-effacing chuckle at, has been disseminated around the country where people who don't know any better, take it seriously....

You can show a bunch of lame crap about ANY city, but if your audience is uneducated about the good things that aren't displayed, their opinion will be only about the bad stuff.   There has been a huge resurgence of negative Cleveland perceptions coinciding with that video.   He should be ashamed.

One day, i'm going to go back and make a proper Cleveland tourism video that will convince people to spend their vacation their as the new hotspot destination.

Cleveland ROCKS!

I work close by' GREAT place to live if you like downtown filth, rude sports fans, loud obnoxious drunks, incredibly pricey food and beer, neighbors who obliviously allow their dogs to shiat on the sidewalk right in front of your next step, bums blithely pissing or taking a nasty "Cleveland Steamer" on your doorway, aggressive "entitled" panhandlers who demand you give them "something: and lotsa cops- always going somewhere else and never around when someone's attempting to rob or kill you-

But, Drew Carey DOES drop into Cleveland like a turd in the punch bowl every few years to espose his libertarian nonsense while advising how best to "improve" Cleveland. He couldn't give two shiats for this town-

/hates it here-suggests driving by and to keep on going

Now if Cleveland were to steal a few Fortune 500's from the South, it would make it worth moving there.
Doubly so if Georgia's Economic Development Theft Board stole them from Ohio in the first place.

The unemployment rate in Cleveland has dropped nearly 4% over the past two years, now at 8.5%. There are big restoration projects going on throughout the city, including an almost total reconstruction of the Flats and what Dan Gilbert describes as as a "little Time Square" that will be finished in the area around Progressive Field and Quicken Loans Arena by 2017. We have a great theater district, a thriving music scene, great restaurants, some of the best hospitals on the planet and a constant stream of revenue from studios shooting movies here all the time. Yeah, it's cold and rusty and you're putting your life at risk by stopping at red lights in East Cleveland, but Cleveland as a whole doesn't suck nearly as bad as the rest of the country (the high majority of them having never been here and only going off of what they saw in the Cleveland Tourism Video) would make you believe.

Cleveland actually has a decent amount of slowly but steadily growing industries and financial services jobs.  Most of the heavy industry that was going to go away did so around 30 years ago in the form of steal and automotive.  The downtown and some of the near burbs are questionable but Cleveland is this weird spread of moderately spread out big towns/small cities in close proximity each with their own flavour.  I won't say its going to make a comeback to its auto industry/standard oil glory period but it does have a much more sustainable future than alot of other rust belt cities.

Sure, they mark the only places where people still live or work.  You may have to drive around awhile but intact glass does exist in Detroit.  Well, for now.

I bet the real purpose is to lure employed people back from the suburbs.

Cleveland has experienced waves of white flight that now sees white people leaving the inner ring suburbs their parents moved to for even more distant suburbs.  Whole neighborhoods of that inner ring of suburbs have turned into deteriorating rental housing with schools going to crap.

2013-03-06 10:57:32 PM
I lived in Cleveland for 4 recent years, and it is a depraved sh*thole. No, not just the "East Side" for all you desperate defenders.

Cleveland will never have Detroit's street cred.

Tell someone that you are from Cleveland, and they will laugh.

Tell someone that you are from Detroit, and they will back off two steps.

The Flats are still fairly devoid of business except titty bars and nightclubs, and is always "fight night" on the weekends. Many businesses were forced out years ago-the notion of "the Flats are back" has been loudly stated since i got here 8 years ago, and it's still not "back". What's now Progressive Field has never paid for itself or brought in the jobs promised. But who cares? It was publicly funded like all the failed projects here. The Euclid corridor project virtually shut down Euclid Ave for three years and 80% of the business failed due to inability to get people in the door. Dan Gilbert is losing his shirt with the new casino, so much that his other Ohio casino is "on hold".The "Medical Mart" is a prime example of another failed public financed project- we were taxed without agreeing to it, there's still just a big hole in the ground three years later, and the parent company is bankrupt and renowned for starting big public works projects and leaving craters there.Who in their right mind would attend a conference in Cleveland or consider this a "destination: town for trade shows or conferences? We are not LA, Vegas, or NY, and they are all seeing their business slow. We have the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (sorta), but all the good stuff happens at the NY location. Our port has been screwing up and losing/embezzling money for decades. Cleveland is known for FAILURE at pretty much everything we attempt, especially when it's publicly funded. Yes, we have a cool arts, theatre and museum areas, but us poor folks would nevefr know it-that's for the few rich folks left. We DO have a BIG lake fulla water, but that will be taken from us soon enough too. That is our most precious resource, and I guarantee we screw that up too. No infrastructure, no manufacturing, the REAL unemployment rate is probably closer to 20% and we have no real solutions.

The retired population is expanding at an exponential rate.  Several northern towns are going to figure out how to attract them (see the magazine articles on places like West Lafayette, IN).  I could buy a house on Cleveland's east side for less than my mortgage in Seattle.

2013-03-06 11:24:43 PM
If anyone is looking to move to an eastern suburb, I have a house I'd sell you!  Just so I can leave.  Enjoy your high taxes and lack of decent paying jobs!  Not to mention the 6 months of winter.  To be fair, there are about 2-3 good months of weather though.  Great area to swindle people too.  People are very trusting.  Dan Gilbert is finding that out!

You may rest assured that everybody already thought that Cleveland was a shiathole, and we find him funnier because he, unlike you, is willing to admit it with a smile. Nobody said "hey, a comedian is making fun of Cleveland, it must be true!". No, they said "hey, a comedian's jokes are funny because they ARE true".

I grew up in Akron, a dull, run-of-the-mill town if there ever was one. Cleveland made it seem like Paris by comparison.
