his long tenure as Venezuela's Grande Queso

I don't speak Spanish, but doesn't the noun go first, then the adjective? Wouldn't "Big Cheese" be "Queso Grande"?

The adjective can come first, but it changes the meaning and depends on the context, but it would be Gran Queso, not grande.

Yes, and it would then mean the great cheese instead of the big cheese.

There are tons of them in Mexico. But if you live in the US, they can't be imported because they don't meet US emissions requirements. They probably don't have emissions control systems at all.

I have a hard time believing that was his only car.  He was a billionaire meglomaniac.  The Bug was probably used for photo ops.  It wouldn't surprise me if he also had a Ferrari or Bentley stashed away.

moops: There are tons of them in Mexico. But if you live in the US, they can't be imported because they don't meet US emissions requirements. They probably don't have emissions control systems at all.

To get one in the US, you have to get someone in Mexico to strip the car completely then stick everything in a container EXCEPT the floor pan and ship it as spare parts.  You then buy a 70s era Beetle in terrible shape with no engine but with a Title.  You then bolt all the parts in your container and register your 1990s vintage Mexican Beetle as your 1974 US Spec Beetle.

Done a little Googling and the only "source" I can find is this 2010 article. The article comes from Criminal Justice International Associates (CJIA) run by Jerry Brewer (Linkedin bio). Brewer writes anti pink tide(tm) articles, defines himself as a "U.S. Government-trained counterterrorism specialist and senior trainer" and is headquartered in northern Virginia. Draw your own conclusions about the real source. The $1bn gives a nice headline for anyone to pick up and quote until it becomes true.

I used to. Chavez' actually looks a lot like mine, except I had those old school mag wheels on it and it was dark metallic grey, same bumper and new window rubber without the chrome insert though. I don't know what year his translates into in the classic models (the mexican ones were '68's basically), but mine was a 1969.

Little old lady t-boned it and totaled it. Twenty years later and I still haven't really recovered, as that car was basically brand new. New engine, new carpets, new headliner, new paint in and out, perfect transmission, etc and I can't even afford a car right now. I actually knew how to work on it and repairs were affordable as was gas for it.

When my ex and i were newly weds in 1974, our car was her 1300 VW Bug convertible.
