Is this a comical tragedy or a tragical comedy?

FEWER

It's a gimmick.

AverageAmericanGuy: It's a gimmick.

Of course it's a gimmick, it's always a gimmick. Just like the multiple paintball episodes, the anime episode, the claymation episode (especially the claymation episode, actually), the musical episode. This is what "Community" does, gimmicks.

Now, if they go the "Supermarionation" route instead, then that would be awesome!

The first paintball episode, while one of the best half-hours of television I had ever seen at the time, ended up ruining the show by forcing them to do endless gimmick episodes like these. It's pretty sad. S1 was golden.

Except for the horribly unfunny british guy who's taking over the daily show. He sucked.

Last weeks episode was pretty decent.

John Oliver? He's not brilliant, but he's 10x better than Chang and the Dean.

Can't wait for the "NEWS FLASH" headline announcing when Community does an episode episode.

/Who'm I kidding? It'll get canceled first.

2013-03-06 08:18:30 AM
Community isn't the same without Dan Harmon, unsurprisingly.

It's soulless, like a show that's doing an impression of Community or your parents marriage 10 years after they had you.

2013-03-06 08:21:33 AM
I'm wondering if they'll stick to staple episodes (they've done Halloween every year, even when they couldn't show it until 3 months after) so maybe they will have their christmas extravaganza soon?

Anyways, this episode sounds like they have to take chang to a cabin to help him get his memory back or something.  mfer.  chang episode.

Waiting for the "good Season 4" episode gimmick.

eh, I kind of agree that's pretty soulless, but I'm not convinced a 4th season with Harmon on board would've been much better.

Yes- If you're going snarky, get the terminology correct.

Will this become the new "jumping the shark"? like, "Man, that show is not good anymore. It paraded the puppets in Season 4". do you think that will become a thing? That would be fetch.

The show hasn't been extremely good season season 2 IMO. 3 had its moments, but those moments mostly didn't 'feel' like 'Community'. 4, which I won't judge until it's over, has the craptastic job of walking back some of Harmon's Flanderizations, getting back to the group dynamic and quasi-ending the show in Harmon's absence. The sad part (for NBC) is it still is NBCs best sitcom aside from Parks and Rec. Both which are doing horribly in the ratings and have been since virtually their inception.

They're doing both Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes later this season.

A puppet episode isn't unprecedented.  The stop-motion Christmas special wasn't that bad.

eh, even season 2 had some dips in quality. I thought it was good overall, but it was starting to get up its own ass about any kind of praise over intelligence.

As long as they keep the story using a device such as Abed retelling it as if it was a show in his head or something.  I had no clue they were doing the claymation one, so the surprise I felt when they did Abed's unstoppable christmas was like a gift as I watched it...on christmas to boot.  Very good episode IMO, and I'm still excited for puppets.

2013-03-06 10:48:48 AM
The claymation episode was great. The puppet thing is just another angle on what they do. Two of the episodes this year have been very good, even without Dan Harmon. Fred Willard in the Chevy alternate role was hilarious. I hope he returns.

The Freaky Friday episode sounds very promising.

Now, should I apologize for liking this show?

So it's now okay to criticize Community, I see. Because when they were doing one gimmick episode every 2 weeks last season, it was the most brilliant show ever.

I was criticizing the show when it was doing that last season. This season's not really all that good so far, though.

Smelly McUgly: I have stopped watching the show. How does it feel in comparison to the Harmon-run eps?

So far this season, it doesn't seem as strong as previous seasons.  I don't think it's a result of Harmon leaving, though.  Looking over the progression of the show, the current trend of "gimmick" episodes and shallower characters would have happened whether he was still there or not.

I'm hoping Jeff meeting his father will bring back character depth. They've been building up the encounter enough

Other trope episodes that I wish would die.

1) The wacky out of character episode that is revealed to be a dream at the end.

2) The 'body swap' episode.

3) The musical episode (caveat, can sometimes be awesome ... see Futurama).

etc

True, there was quite a bit of flanderization going on in the show previously.
