(KJRH Tulsa)   Five-year-old orphaned Chinese girl was unable to hear, speak or use sign language. Then an American doctor of audiology decided to not only adopt her, but also get her a cochlear implant. The dust, it's everywhere. w/vid   (kjrh.com) divider line 64

Its just too bad its so late.  I don't understand, why didn't the orphanage teach her sign language earlier?

Lack of resources. And when that exists, unless someone takes a particular interest...future is pretty dim.

Adorable little girl. Awful dusty in here.

And while she's coming late to the game with language skills, odds are pretty good she had her own basic sign language system. Anyone who's been around toddlers before they're very verbal knows how they use non-verbal communication to communicate basic needs. Since she seems to have no impairments beyond being deaf, she was probably able to do basic communication.

Children who are isolated due to disabilities usually end up with profound brain problems, because of lack of stimulation. Orphanages that leave them in cage cribs, etc.

Five year old orphaned deaf mute Chinese girl would be an awesome band name.

Okay, maybe not, but it was the 2nd thing I thought of.

The first had something to do with Woody Allen and probably was an even worse idea.

Can we just let it go for once? I know this is fark, but it's a nice story for a change, and who cares where she is from. I'm sure she had much less of a chance of something like this happening to her had she stayed in China. She's just a little kid for chrissakes be happy for her.

I guess you're not too familiar with orphanages in China. Many of the children in them are girls who were abandoned shortly after birth by their parents due to the "one child" policy, in part because boys are highly favored over girls. Many orphanages in China give minimal care at best, and it's doubtful that any of the staff had the ability to teach her sign language in the first place.

Chinese sign language is based on drawing characters in the air. It's very difficult to learn.

Oh shut it. An orphan is an orphan, it doesn't matter where she was born. Besides, you have no idea whether they may have already tried to adopt in the US, it isn't always easy.

Those implants are a miracle, but very expensive.  I've known a family or two that could only afford one.  And even then, their co-pay was over 20K.  But it was worth it, especially after the kids could be yelled at from far away.  Nothing like trying to get a kid's attention from across the street without audible cues.

2013-03-06 06:16:51 AM
Some people in the deaf community think the implant is a bad thing and would rather deaf  children remain so. How incredibly selfish.

Cute kid. I always wonder and fail to understand what it would be like for someone blind or deaf since birth to suddenly be able to use those senses... like your vision would just be a nonsensical mass of color because you had no experience interpreting the visual representation of space.

/Also fascinated that people like Helen Keller can be reached despite no hearing or vision... really hard for me to imagine being either person in that scenario, where to even begin?

I feel for this little girl, and it's very sweet.  I'm just sick of people going to china to get a kid when there are thousands of kids here that could really use adoption into a nice household.  But a chinese kid (especially a girl, I rarely see boys) gets you points at the nose-high club.  The ones here black and icky.

I can a little bit. Not all Deafness can be cured with the implant. Not all Deaf people can afford it, either. And an adult who has had no spoken language would have great difficulty learning such, if they could at all. There's a window for speech/ language. The more people who have the implant, the smaller the world becomes for those who don't. ASL is the fourth most common language in the US right now but this is changing because of the implant. If fewer and fewer people spoke your language, and it was the only one you had, it might freak you out too. So selfish? Maybe. But I do understand.

It's often easier and much less expensive to adopt from overseas. Also, girls are abandoned at a much higher rate than boys. Instead of criticizing those who go out of their way to help orphaned children, why don't you support efforts to make helping orphaned children easier?

Helen Keller lost her hearing and vision as a toddler, after having already been heavily exposed to language, and she was already verbal. If she had not had this exposure and stimulus it's likely she would have been profoundly retarded. In instances of severe neglect where the child is neglected to the point of loss of language development...even if they're getting enough food, they're not getting the crucial stimulus in a critical window. Recovery depends on numerous factors, but there's always profound deficits.

Helen Keller on the other hand, was able to attend college, and was an extremely intelligent woman who was an brilliant essayist. She had communication and only a short window where it was lost - though not completely, she did make her needs known in a non verbal toddler like fashion. Which is very frustrating and helps fuel the need and desire for communication in children.

Not to diminish her accomplishments in the least, but she was also very fortunate in many ways too.

the Chinese are inhuman when it comes to kids.  My mom works as a sign language interpreter in farking rural Pennsylvania of all places and has already encountered 2 adopted that were ditched at an orphanage.  The girl was ditched at 6 months old because the parents found out she was deaf.  The boy however was ditched immediately because he was born with a cleft foot (easily fixed once he got here).  The farking problem is Chinese orphanages don't treat babies who grow into toddlers at their facility.  He was bottle fed until 4 and wasn't spoken to until an American family adopted him (also at 4).  Now he hasn't built any of the skills necessary to be a 5 year old.  The family and my mom are working with a private psychiatrist (the social worker was nowhere to be found and didn't know how to handle it) to help advance the kid.

tl;dr the Chinese are still the third world to me.  and fark Russia.  their orphanages are just as bad and now we aren't "allowed" to adopt them?  Fark off.

Damn.  Ya beat me to it.  As a parent of an 8yr old girl I think it's great that any kid is adopted....from *anywhere*.  And that goes double when it's a child with a birth defect.

CIs are a dead issue in the Deaf Community now.  It didn't eliminate Deaf Culture.  It didn't eliminate ASL  In fact, more people sign than ever as more Hearing people are learning Sign (present company included).

Don't use a 20-year-old argument to judge the Deaf Community.  You don't know their History.  You don't know how many well-meaning Hearies and their "cures" resulted in persecution and made their lives WORSE.  They were right to be skeptical about CIs, but the early CI kids are now Adults.  They don't think of themselves as "cured."  Most of them are proud to use ASL and proud to be Deaf.  They get access to both Cultures.

Nearly every Deaf person knows people with CIs.  So excuse them for not submitting their children to be Dr. Hearie's guinea pigs back in the 1990s.
