I believe it said he made an igloo.  Or most likely, just a hole in the snow.  Then used branches as cover.  That's not a bad way to go and most people are too stupid to realize that a snow cavern is a lot warmer than standing outside in the elements.  If the show gave him the idea then it worked.

Article said snow cave. I think I remember seeing Grylls making one on his show. Branches on the inside to get your body off the snow is a good idea for insulation.

And drinking water from a stream? As opposed to from a stick?

I think it's instead of eating snow.  It's an obvious water source because it's all around you, but eating it can be problematic as it can lower your body temperature.

I like all of them. As a kid I grew up playing in the woods. Since I'm 25 and don't live around enough trees to not look like a psycho climbing them, I'll have to settle for survivor TV shows. Maybe one day I'll be less broke and get the chance to camp in some of these awesome locations..

Snow is mostly air, which is what makes it a great insulator. You would have to end up eating a lot of snow to hydrate properly, causing a lot of heat loss. It's better to collect snow, melt it and keep it in your container to drink. If you don't have a fire, put snow in your container and keep it next to your body (not directly against) and let your body warmth melt it.

I've spent time with Cody in Arizona, he always gets asked what he thinks about the other survival show hosts. He goes out of his way to give a polite answer about Bear Grylls, but you can tell that Cody doesn't like the guy or at least what Man vs Wild is teaching. He gets pretty funny talking about some of the other hosts, has some neat stories.

My favorite ski mountain but if you go to far to the west...you are royally farked.  He was skiing up high in very poor visibility so he went into the tree area called Pipecleaner (on the trail map as barber shop glade).  There are tons of orange signs telling you to stay inside bounds but he either got lost, got confused or thought he found a secret stash of powder and could reconnect back.  That area is death and leads to a steep cliff, a raging river and deep deep nothing.

Miracle is the correct word.

He had to cross some pretty rough stuff actually. That would be down, quite a ways, across the Appalachian trail, over a frozen river (W. Carabasset IIRC), and then out from there. If I'd been in said situation I think I'd have just gone up but not bad for someone who doesn't likely know the terrain.

I agree if it's a week in the desert, but overnight in Maine is not so arduous. He probably exposed himself needlessly. Judgement like that is part of survival tactics, too.

Anyway, I just think it's funny that the kid cited "drinking out of streams" as a survival skill he learned from Bear.

They boil it when the situation allows them to. Cody has stated on his show and in person that it takes a few days for Giardia to kick in, and odds are that you will be found before you make a mess of yourself. Boiling water is a very resource intensive activity- water, fire, fuel, and at least two containers (ideally). If the situation allows you to boil water to make it safe, by all means, but the situation will also dictate when that rule can be ignored.

I've never understood Cody's insistence on using iodine. Every time I've gone on a class with him, he makes everyone use iodine to sterilize water unless you have a thyroid condition or some kind of reaction to the stuff. Makes the water taste horrible. Last time I went out with him, I took a big baggie of Vitalite powder to try to mask the taste. Ick. He does go into detail as to why water needs to be made safe and other methods to sterilize water. He gets a bit more graphic in real life than on the show.
