MNguy: Meh. The majority of Venezuelans weren't tortured.

Golly, ruthless utilitarianism is so much nicer than ruthless capitalism!

I'm opposed to any ideology in which people's humanity can be cast aside when convenient to the advancement of some central ideal.

WTF Indeed: This is sad day for the GOP. Now who will they piss their pants in fear over? I suggest Evo Morales of Bolivia.

Iran, NK, Al Qaeda, Castro, China, Putin, gays, Obama, Hillary Clinton, the Black Panthers, environmentalists, illegal immigrants, the UN, Hollywood, tax hikes, "gun grabbers," George Soros, the "mainstream media," that Arab looking guy down the street, their own shadows...

Which party was supposed to be the party of bed-wetting pansies again?

That's all I'm trying to say.  A couple of rotten apples got plucked, big deal, right?

InmanRoshi: Chavez was a heavy handed egomaniac, but he was Ghandi compared to most of the regimes the US propped up throughout South America for the last 60 years.    I wonder what the difference in word count would be between the amount of coverage the US press spent on Chavez compared to Alfredo Stroessner.

Cousin Alfredo hasn't gotten 1/4 the kicking around he deserves.

Tigger: Marine1: Tigger: Marine1: Lost Thought 00: Never understood the hate for him in the US. He wasn't a dictator. Was it simply because his country was sitting on a lot of oil and not letting US companies reap the profits of it?

My understanding is that he nationalized the oil reserves in Venezuela.

If I were an oil company (or any other company, for that matter) and someone ripped my property right out from under me... yeah, I'd be a little peeved.

I could be wrong, though.

Either way, man was probably more boisterous than he should have been for what he wished to accomplish.

Where do you think the oil companies got that property from you bright shining star of long term thinking? (pro tip - it was from right under someone)

Well, they didn't take it by force. I'm willing to bet at least some of it was paid for legitimately. Some... not all.

When you are buying mineral rights in a south american shiatshow the difference between 'paid for legitimately' and 'force' is merely the effectiveness with which corruption is concealed.

So your options are "Venezuela - a country with no corruption" or the classic statist argument "it was the law so it was OK"

Good Luck.

So they can't enforce some system semblance of ethical business deals in their countries?

Happy Hours: but I think these Iranians would take issue with your statement that Ahmedinnerjacket was democratically elected.

Also he doesn't really have any actual power, there's 13 people who can overturn anything he decides and he doesn't control the military in any case. Sure he can shoot off his mouth but he can't really do much on his own.

There's plenty the American Government has been guilty of. Just like there's plenty of things everyone else has done. That does not minimize the fact you're ridiculing a survivor of torture and calling them a propaganda mouthpiece.

What's a little inhuman torture between friends as long as some people get helped, right?

Hitler committed genocide and fought wars of aggression, outside of that he was a fantastic leader.

Stalin turned a crumbling nation into an industrialized world power in a fraction of the time it took capitalism to do the same thing.  The Ukrainians who decided to resist the government who controlled the food supplies and deserved to have their supplies cut.

Pol Pot was able to stay in power until he was removed by Communist Vietnam, not the capitalist west.

What's your point?

Flanked by Cabinet ministers, Maduro teared up as he announced the news.

"We must unite now more than ever," he said, calling on Venezuelans to remain peaceful and respectful.

He really didn't. Germany did pretty well relative to 1940s Europe, but the Final Solution and the various purges of the Slavs and Poles was a terrible policy from an economic standpoint.

If you honestly consider Hitler to be a great leader in any arena of statesmanship, you need your head examined. He murdered a good chunk of his country's intellectuals and drove the survivors overseas. He made decisions on the war effort while addicted to meth. I could go on.

Fidel Castro is essentially dead. Raul is running the show now. He just doesn't have the reputation that his brother does. (still no reason to continue our silly embargo against Cuba. Opening up trade with Cuba is the only way to win against that regime).

Odd that you left Qadaffi off your list, but since Bush sent Condi Rice to kiss and make up with him I guess he's okay. Bush was a traitor to the US to do that. Qadaffi was a terrorist, plain and simple and the world is better off without him even if Libya hasn't improved.

And so far Kim Jong Un does not seem to be an improvement upon his father (meet the new boss, same as the old boss)

I guess you missed the part where he saw what we did to Iraq and handed over his nuke program without a single shot being fired. The only two successful de-nuke-programming events in history are GWB - Iraq and GWB - Libya. No one else has ever pulled it off.

South Africa voluntarily gave up its nukes in 1991.

I don't like many of the things my government does, no. I view America the same way I view religion: very powerful, often very harmful, sometimes very beneficial, and unlikely to disappear any time soon.
Remember that it's quite possible to oppose both sides in a dispute and remain morally consistent.
