My proposal of a three day wait to have intercourse to get the proper counseling never made it out of committee. I just don't get democracy sometimes.

Women are allowed to think in ND? Well, there's your problem!

pciszek: DeaH: Ladies of South Dakota, here's a handy link. Think of Plan B the same way you would a fire extinguisher. You don't wait for a fire to run out and buy a fire extinguisher, and you don't wait for contraceptive failure to buy Plan B. If you live in a state like South Dakota, I suggest buying two kits. Have one on you and one in your home.

"Only 4 left in stock "

Seriously, though, can they really sell medication online like that?

For that matter, could a wealthy person with strong feelings on this issue buy a truckload of Plan B and hand it out like beads at Mardi Gras?

I don't know about handing the pills out like Mardi Gras beads, but Plan B is OTC. You can get it from drugstore.com if Amazon runs out (there were more at Amazon when I linked to it).

ravenlore: Because goodness knows a chick in Huron can afford to go to Sioux Falls, then have to wait three days either staying in SF or driving back to Pierre and then driving BACK to Sioux Falls.

There's only one provider in the state, and that provider is in the southeastern corner of the state. If you're in Rapid you might decide to go to Denver, and you're in Aberdeen you're almost certainly going to go to Fargo.

While admittedly SF is the most populous city, anyone else is about guaranteed to be a hundred miles from a provider.

If the waiting periods and counseling nonsense hold up, it will be more cost-effective for many South Dakotans to drive another 86 miles on the Interstate to the clinic in Sioux City, Iowa, thereby avoiding South Dakota's maze of laws. (Iowa's Senate is Democratic-controlled and unlikely to pass any new abortion laws soon.) The people most affected by South Dakota restrictions are people in the Sioux Falls area who lack transportation and have no choice but the Sioux Falls clinic.

You know what cripples do? They drive Hoverounds. Yeah, those Hoverounds offered at little or no cost to the customer. I don't want to subsidize the GOP cripples.

Evil High Priest: More_Like_A_Stain: Theaetetus: No, that's not it at all... It's just that there's no where a pregnant woman could go on, say, a Sunday morning around 9-10 AM, to get counseling against having an abortion. Nope, no places like that exist at all, and they certainly don't have steeples and allegedly-celibate men in robes and pipe organs.

Isn't that the place where they're always thinking of the children?

Well, only the unborn ones. The born ones are probably poor democrats, so fark 'em.

What about the ones that look good in a white robe and a blond wig on date night?

That's about right.  But people don't make that mix up in the other direction.  I think it's because when you hear Dakota, you think North.  South Dakota's a contradiction.

The My Little Pony Killer: Supporters say the change would ensure women have time to receive required counseling at pregnancy help centers, which discourage abortions. make it to the second trimester and can no longer abort at all

Don't dance around the issue by trying to act as though you're doing anybody a favor here.

Yep.  Tiny legislation by tiny legislation and the pro-lifers are slowly outlawing abortion.  You gotta get an ultrasound.  Wait, you gotta get a vaginal ultrasound.  You gotta wait a day.  Wait, you gotta wait a few days.  Wait, weekends/holidays don't count.  Oh, hey the only clinic in the entire state has doctors without admitting privileges at the local hospital?  Cool, - All abortion doctors have to have admitting privileges at the local hospital.  Oh hey, the abortion clinics are only set up as outpatient centers?  Cool, - all abortion clinics have to meet actual hospital standards.  Sorry if that's too expensive or your facility cannot be retrofit to accommodate!

I don't know how this stuff isn't instantly struck down, it's the equivalent of passing a "bill of attainder" which IIRC is unconstitutional in America.

So, a two-sevenths' gain of advantage. Nice work.

Continue foreshortening the legal abortion limit, and soon you'll have daddy's myriad sperm cells declared legal persons any time one so much as grazes the skin of a breathing woman, creating a sacred soul endowed with our Saviour's Father's holy spirit up until but not after the unlikely moment it's actually birthed.

You must be proud.

Have some more casserole.

That's the beauty of it: They pass this shiat, it fails to stick by whatever mechanism, and the rubes scream more and send more money and elect more Republicans.

Seriously, it's a political perpetual motion machine.

Gun control is a similar issue for Libruls. An issue where not much REALLY changes but fighting the 'Good' fight lets them feel better about themselves.

It is. Then it gets appealed to the next highest court on some technicality or other, and it goes around again. Sooner or later one of these asinine laws will hit the Supreme Court and be found unconstitutional even under the strict standards of Casey and Gonzales...after much unneeded misery and anguish has been felt and many dollars spent. But until then, the state law controls, because that's the way our laws and Constitution function. Unless someone can get a federal injunction--which can also be appealed and stayed.

Fun, isn't it? Unless you're the desperate soul who needs an abortion, but you should have thought of that before you got pregnant.

Then carry on.

Except that it may not be three days.  There may be holidays and weekends and then you need to reschedule because of work and find a new baby-sitter, and the clinic doesn't have an available time-slot, and so it goes.  This is bullshiat and we all know that if men got pregnant, abortions would be tax-payer funded and men would brag about how many they had.

I saw an ad like that in NYC - it looked like it was a place where a pregnant teen can go to discuss their "options".... which you'd think includes abortion but I doubt it when in tiny print at the bottom it said "funded by such and such Pro-Life Organization"

The closest I have seen to that were places that offer free ultrasounds, pregnancy tests, pregnancy related health care etc that happened to be run by pro-lifers.  So presumably there they confirm your pregnancy test and then discuss options which do not include abortion.  But I don't see anything wrong with that, it's their money, they're offering free health care in exchange for a chance to talk you out of an abortion.  No one has to go, you can always go, get confirmation or whatever else you want and then head to a provider.  It's quite different than what he described.

THX 1138: tom baker's scarf: waiting periods seem only to drag out a miserable process for no reason.

Ding ding ding.   If you can't legally make abortion illegal, at least make the women suffer as much as possible as they jump through all the necessary hoops.

Can you imagine the hijinks if the male contribution to pregnancy was highlighted similarly? "Sorry, dude, but you have to have a physical exam and permission from five different doctors (at the state and federal level) before you can blow that load because a test has shown that it's going to result in a pregnancy."

/The abortion debate is about men hiding their shame when the evidence in is womens bodies.
