Women seeking abortions in South Dakota currently must wait three days after seeing an abortion clinic doctor before they can have the procedure. The bill would make it so that weekends and holidays do not count in calculating the three-day waiting period.

Supporters say the change would ensure women have time to receive required counseling at pregnancy help centers, which discourage abortions.

Because their being forced to get an abortion? Is that it?

No, that's not it at all... It's just that there's no where a pregnant woman could go on, say, a Sunday morning around 9-10 AM, to get counseling against having an abortion. Nope, no places like that exist at all, and they certainly don't have steeples and allegedly-celibate men in robes and pipe organs.

But why stop there? Why not have a waiting period of 35 weeks?

I can't help but feel that all of this is just trying to get a case to try and overturn Roe v. Wade before the more conservative justices retire or die.

I highly doubt Roberts would want his to be the court that overturns it, not after his Obamacare performance.

Well, only the unborn ones. The born ones are probably poor democrats, so fark 'em.

On the other hand, Republican men talk about rape all the time. It's just too much rape when women do it too.

Right! The only thing keeping these abortion mills from being successful is the overwhelming regulations! Study it out.

Given the high population of South Dakota and it's secular beliefs, this could prevent tens of abortions each year.

Because goodness knows a chick in Huron can afford to go to Sioux Falls, then have to wait three days either staying in SF or driving back to Pierre and then driving BACK to Sioux Falls.

There's only one provider in the state, and that provider is in the southeastern corner of the state. If you're in Rapid you might decide to go to Denver, and you're in Aberdeen you're almost certainly going to go to Fargo.

While admittedly SF is the most populous city, anyone else is about guaranteed to be a hundred miles from a provider.

Hey, they want to stay out of private business. It's your private parts they want to control, but only if you're a woman, so it's all good.

Ladies of South Dakota, here's a handy link. Think of Plan B the same way you would a fire extinguisher. You don't wait for a fire to run out and buy a fire extinguisher, and you don't wait for contraceptive failure to buy Plan B. If you live in a state like South Dakota, I suggest buying two kits. Have one on you and one in your home.

Riiiiiiight.

Like they'd approve the hundreds of millions of dollars in funds to pay for that stuff after restricting a woman's access to all her birth control and family planning options.

It's not like they could look at somewhere like, I dunno, Texas for example, and see what happens when you make it really, really difficult to access family planning information and women's health clinics.

... I know that. It was a joke about how restricting abortion results in unwanted children with parents who can't afford them.

I'm fine with this...if they also rule that every other medical procedure must also have a waiting period.  Need an emergency appendectomy on Friday?  Sure thing, we'll see you next Thursday.  You can wait, right?  Oh, and we'll need you to undergo a few catscans in the meantime- what?  Oh, of course you don't NEED a catscan, and neither do we, but we just wanted to add as much hassle as possible.

Don't dance around the issue by trying to act as though you're doing anybody a favor here.

If you dickheads really wanted to see less abortions, you'd be pushing for comprehensive sexual education and more Planned Parenthood funding.  Selfish farking anti-choice dickheads.

bborchar: I'm fine with this...if they also rule that every other medical procedure must also have a waiting period.

This

Any non-emergency medical procedure should require a 3 day waiting period.  Any non-emergency medical procedure should require an ultrasound where the doctor clearly explains to you what will be done.  "You see that appendix right there?  We're going to take it out."  You can turn your head if you want to.

What's preventing women from receiving counseling before seeing their doctor?  Why is the counseling required?  Can't the GOP just fsck off for once and let people take personal responsibility for their lives -- like they're always demanding we do?

The problem is that they need to be able to see women as people before they let us take personal responsibility for our lives.

I knew this one girl who got pregnant and her friend dared her to get an abortion and so she did it.

And then I had this other friend who got pregnant but really wanted a dog and didn't have money for both a baby and a dog so she had an abortion and got a dog.

And then this other friend of mine was pregnant but this fortune cookie told her to free herself of any unnecessary burdens and so the next day she got an abortion.

If only the state would have made them all wait a couple of extra days there might be three more babies in this world right now.

2013-03-05 07:19:06 PM
Why don't they just require a 3 month wait and get it over with?

Yep.  Tiny legislation by tiny legislation and the pro-lifers are slowly outlawing abortion.  You gotta get an ultrasound.  Wait, you gotta get a vaginal ultrasound.  You gotta wait a day.  Wait, you gotta wait a few days.  Wait, weekends/holidays don't count.  Oh, hey the only clinic in the entire state has doctors without admitting privileges at the local hospital?  Cool, - All abortion doctors have to have admitting privileges at the local hospital.  Oh hey, the abortion clinics are only set up as outpatient centers?  Cool, - all abortion clinics have to meet actual hospital standards.  Sorry if that's too expensive or your facility cannot be retrofit to accommodate!

2013-03-05 07:22:17 PM
I'm not a woman, nor have I even been pregnant. Nor have I made a girl pregnant.

But... why is the base assumption that women rush to the abortion clinic without thinking about it first? That's the only rationale I can think of for this... well, that and fanatacism. When your base assumptions are no one thinks but you, and you're over the age of 12, someone failed at raising you.

That's right. I'm now blaming politicians parents for their actions. They clearly won't take personal responsibility.

You can just use the word "fark" if you like. Fark has a filter that turns the work fark into Fark. Or even type Fark, directly. The preview will still show fark as fark, but the final result will show up as Fark.

/that made no sense, I'm sure
