Oh, he'll be game. Downey's no dummy. When he signed on to do the first movie, he had it put into his contract that he gets a piece of the backend of any movie where he appears as Iron Man. Reason being, he knew at least one Avengers flick was en route, and that it was gonna be huge.

As a result of that, estimates are that he made upwards of $50 million off of the first Avengers movie. So he'd have to be a giant moron to do anything to screw up a payday like that. And he obviously isn't, since he saw it coming years ago.

I'm pretty sure I just came twice during that trailer.

/Possibly even a third time at the end

Actors are odd creatures and logic doesn't always work well with them.  I'm sure he's locked up through Avengers 2, so one more fat pay yet to come, but by then, he'll certainly have enough money so it won't be a big motivator.  He's a very serious actor and the role, script, director, etc. would mean more by the time IM4 gets serious about casting and contracts.  Marvel will move with a new actor if need be.

bighairyguy: Marvel will move with a new actor if need be.

Which would be complete suicide, and Marvel surely knows it. There hasn't been a more widely-agreed-upon perfect matching of character and actor in a very long time. Audiences AND critics love him in that role, and he makes them obscene amounts of money.

Long story short: If Downey asks for a contract extension that includes hot-and-cold running hookers and blow in his trailer...Then Disney is gonna suck it up, and start pricing it out.

Start pricing? I would be surprised if that isn't already worked out.
For that matter, I would not be surprised if they are watching/managing their "talents'" lives the way Hollywood used to do, back in the day.

Hmm, a whole squad of Ironmen?
Wonder how they will explain it, considering that Tony should be about the only one able to create the suits.

Well he's sober nowadays and I think that achievement should be acknowledged. Just more money for the hookers.

Nice trailer. Crappy poster though. Tell the interns to step away from the Photoshop.

Instead of people though, I'd wager it'll be robots, controlled via the Extremis armor.

Book it, done, I'm there.

Well, if a poor guy from Russis could e replicate his generators, the armor can't be that difficult.

The second movie really wasn't that good.

Yup.  Tony can slave control his other suits while he's wearing one.  There have been several times in the comics when he's needed backup and he calls his old suits into action.

What makes Marvel's Phase 1/2/.../n plan so different from anything else is the long-term vision / planning / integration.  They might not all be 4-star gems, but there won't any contractual obligation or milking the franchise movies either.  Each movie will have it's own story to tell plus will contribute to the larger Marvel Universe, and will be manned with top notch people on both sides of the camera.  This is candyland for RDJ, the actor so I'm sure he'll stick around until it's time to pass the torch.

Noh-Varr also once hacked Tony's tech to control a whole mess of unmanned suits.  It's been done.

Not only are the individual movies laid out like a comic, the movie franchise is structured like the comic franchise.

Brilliant formula.

I hope they replace Tony Stark with a teenage version like they did in the comics a while back.  Maybe they could use the kid who played Freddy on iCarly.

The Mandarin has long been obsessed with Iron Man's suits so he's in the game too.  The one thing they didn't show in the trailer was why they needed dozens of Iron Man suits.  I'm guessing it's to battle a comparable number of Mandarin-sourced suits piloted by Extremis-powered humans.

/One for Iron Man 3 please

I read somewhere that a big reason they were doing Extremis was so that they wouldn't have a Tony-fights-a-guy-in-a-suit climax again

Amazing to think RDJ was Lohaning it like crazy some years ago, and sometimes in the nude and in stranger's living rooms.

Tell me, how did I not see Mickey Rorke replicate Starks energy generator, then become another armored idiot at the end of the movie...

With Iron Man having health issues once again.

Not anytime soon.  If RDJ wants to walk away from Iron Man, Marvel would probably be better off just offering him the occasional cameo and letting the character rest for a while.  There's plenty of Marvel characters due for a film treatment before they need to start rebooting.  Like Squirrel Girl.

I wonder if Captain America 3 and/or Avengers 3 will be based on Civil War?  At least it would give them an excuse to have the heroes all kicking the crap out of each other.

I love RDJ in that role, but 2 was a steaming pile filled to the brim with plot holes and other stupid ideas. The entire time, I'm basically yelling at them to "farking fly out of range of his friggin' whips and SHOOT HIM YOU IDIOT."

So far so good. Also, some press got to watch about 20 minutes or so footage, mainly the big blow up the mansion scene. Interesting spoiler in that one, so read at your own risk (IGN I think). And yes, they are plotting, building, and unifying all of these films together like comic books. Iron Man books/films are sci-fi action adventure pieces w/ a lot of character analysis of Tony Stark, part time alcoholic. Captain America books can either be total 40's/50's pulp action or Cold War action thrillers. Apparently Captain America 2 is styled after 1970's gritty spy thrillers. Thor is high fantasy epic. Hulk is the hardest one b/c the books have gone all over the place, the character has gone all over the place, and sometimes two completely opposite approaches have been great. Personally, Planet Hulk would be awesome, but man would it be tough to pull off on the big screen.

Eh, no. More like Iron-Man was his first big movie in years due to his coke addiction and Marvel didn't want to risk paying the guy millions only for him to blow it mid movie. So fun fact, he was the least paid star in Iron-Man 1 and was offered a proceed of the profits. Also, at the time Marvel Studios was banking everything on Iron-Man which they didn't expect to actually go big. when it exploded, Avengers was announced the next day and Downey was set for life due to serendipity :D

Fantastic flick.  It's also the reason that Shane Black got tapped to direct IM3.  When Favs stepped down RDJ told Marvel to hire Black.
