The Canadian edition has never been better. Jay Onrait and Dan O'Toole are some funny motherfarkers who sometimes plan their jokes several segments in advance.

I don't really like/dislike sportscenter more now than I did in the (semi-recent) past.  Yes, Stephen A. Smith sucks.  Everyone knows that.  This is kind of making an issue out of nothing.

Then no, SportsCenter is not the most idiotic show in their lineup.

You mean Sports Centre? I saw it in Vancouver. The World Series was a 2 minute segment and then right back to hockey.

It's good to keep in mind the difference.  There's SportsCenter, and then there's the other self-produced tripe they put out.

The author missed a trick by not including "Outside the Lines", Bob Ley, Jeremy Schapp, Rachel Nichols, the chubby blonde chick and that whole "people, not sports" segment of programming. It was bad enough (in the mid 90s) when there was a single OTL segment on Sportscenter. Now that it has its own half-hour (full hour? Gods, I hope not), it's like the nightly news people decided to fark with sports news as well.

The farking crawl shouldn't be the most informative thing on your network - and even there, "LeBron takes a piss - stay tuned for the urinal's reaction interview" stories are interspersed with the scores and major news.

// waiting for the day Stat Boy leaps through the screen and decapitates Stephen A.

If you watch BSPN for anything besides a game that your team is involved in (preferably muted and with closed captioning turned off), you're a sucker.

The live SportsCenter allowed ESPN to have fresh content and the ability to react better to breaking news. It has also, however, resulted in six hours of airtime that need to be filled - and hardly ever, at this point, by highlights.

My friend programs 3 hours of morning rush sports radio and they inevitably end up touching on viral videos, non-sports stuff, etc.  There's just not 3 hours of stuff to talk about right now with football over, the Lightning in the crapper, and the baseball season ahead of us.  I can imagine ESPN having trouble filling 6 hours of television.

The fans would get to decide whether the buzzer beater or a Jadeveon Clowney hit from earlier in the year was the 'best of the best' play, a distinction that means nothing.

Gee, you don't say?  Maybe this guy needs to turn the channel.

Weird how most ESPN material is complete crap - not even an attempt at fact checking or vetting otherwise unconfirmed reports before spewing it all over their network. The one bright spot is their documentaries - that might be the only thing I like that's got the ESPN logo on it.

There are so, so many worse things than SportsCenter on ESPN. Today alone has:

Outside The Lines
First Take
NFL Live (I like this okay, but it's off-season)
Around the Horn
Pardon The Interruption

and a crappy ACC basketball game.

That's not even starting on ESPN2, ESPNEWS ESPNU or ESPNRadio...

Yeah, they couldn't even get the World Baseball Classic on one of the normal channels. Instead I would have to shell out money for another channel..

Granted, my "Sportscenter isn't that bad" post is going to invalidate my opinion anyway, but PTI is straight-up entertaining.  At least, compared to anything else on the ESPN horde of networks.  Other than, you know, actual sports.

Me too, but I wonder how well it would hold up if we watched entire broadcasts today.  Would I still be on the edge of my seat, going "say it, Dan, say it... yes! He said en fuego!"?  I have a feeling I might not find that as entertaining as I did circa 1993.

I kind of like it and Wilbon is fun/honest.  If you stick to one ESPN show a day, I'd suggest that one.  Briefly touching each topic over a variety of sports is fun, but Cornheiser is a straight up tard and a half.

Kornheiser is the only guy on ESPN who will make jokes about smuggling bats in his pants, or do a cat impression.  Think of that what you will.

Well, that buzzer-beater from the weekend must not have been good enough if it can't beat a two-month-old football hit by Jadeveon farking Clowney.

outsides the line is really dependent on what topic they are covering, when it's going good it's really good.  investigative reporting is interesting.  and everyone knows pti is the best thing on espn.  also, everyone knows skip and stephen a. smith screaming at each other on first take is the worst thing ever.

/they should just show highlights like they used to
//also, cutting back on the nfl coverage wouldn't hurt.  there's not actually 4 hours of nfl news every day.

Surprised by all the OTL hate.  I find it to be one of their more enjoyable programs.  Granted, comparing them against the monkeys flinging poo a.k.a. First Take isn't much of a challenge.

Wilbon and Kornheiser (and Bob Ryan over on ATH) are actual sports writers.  They still have some notion that they're journalists, unlike people like Skip Feckless and Colin Blowhard who are just full-blown entertainers.  and OTL was perfectly fine when it was a weekly show on Sunday mornings.  A daily 30-minute program is just too much airtime to fill.  But at least OTL is willing to talk about things like the gambling and violence problems in south Florida youth football leagues.  I don't exactly see Hannah Storm delivering a critical analysis of anything beyond LeBron's latest tweet.

Bob Ley embodies the ESPN we need.  Chris Berman is the ESPN viewers deserve.  Tom Mees is the ESPN we're never getting back.

I do like that the Butt-fumble is becoming the unstoppable juggernaut of the Friday morning SC "Worst of the worst" countdown thing, 12 or 13 weeks straight so far, and nothing is dethroning Sanchez from his dirty throne.

I know, but the article is about Sports Center in America. Which is why I responded to "Canadian Sports Centre is awesome" with "It's just hockey highlights." It might be easy for Sports Centre in a country like Canada obsessed with hockey to show hockey all day while polite guys in mullets talk about the Leafs. But in the US it wouldn't work.

We've got 4 major sports vying for airtime, not to mention coverage of NASCAR/Tennis/Soccer/Golf. There's not enough time to go in depth on subjects. The talking heads are asked to be "experts" on Lebron James, Danica Patrick, and Rory Mcilroy.

So of course a show about hockey for hockey fans is popular. It's just not a fair comparison to US Sports Center.

Which, by the way, sucks.
