Mila Kunis is the daughter of immigrants. Her parents ran a drugstore franchise and she worked as a cashier there - even when she was on That '70s Show. (Probably during hiatus.) Good for them for keeping her grounded and not letting her get chewed up and spit out like so many young Hollywoodites.

FuturePastNow: Yeah, she's hot and all, but I don't believe for a moment that she was actually interested in that guy's life and friends.

Probably true, but when you're traveling around for days/weeks talking about nothing other than this one movie you just filmed, any other conversation is more interesting.

KatjaMouse: Happy Hours: I'm surprised she said she had tended bar before. When would that have been? Because she started on That '70s Show when she was about 12 and I can't imagine that after that gig she would ever have to tend bar. But she is Russian (or maybe Ukrainian - can't remember for sure) and I guess they have 8 year olds serving there?

No, she was 15 when she started the show, not 12.

Hyperbole, how does it work? And I may be wrong, but I thought when she first auditioned for it she was only 14. She was probably 15 before they actually started filming it.

Her parents allowed her to pursue acting but so long as she had a "real" job and helped the family. Like they owned a CVS or Walgreens type drug store so after shooting episodes her mom would pick her up from the studio where she was expected to work as a cashier for the rest of the day or do her homework in the back office. As a young woman he bar tended before her career really took off. So basically on the tail end of doing That 70's show. I bet you dollars to doughnuts that's why she's one of those "down to Earth" actresses.

I can't even imagine. So she did that when she was on That '70s Show? If I were a customer there, I would have been a bit starstruck I think. She does seem very "down to Earth" to me. That's one of the reasons I like her so much. Her looks certainly don't hurt though.

/just had to IMDB her for the start date of her show

Now whenever I read any of your posts I will imagine you look like Mila Kunis and read your words in her voice.

Atomic Spunk: Buttknuckle: Wellon Dowd: PsyLord: A recent photo showed Jennifer Lawrence smoking something.  Doesn't matter what it was, smoking is just a turn off for me and a deal breaker.

I interviewed her once for my college paper. Her schedule was such that I had to interview her in the living area of her hotel suite. Unfortunately, I hadn't had my lunch before the interview and I was starving. There was a big bowl of grapes sitting on the table between us and despite the obvious hunger in my eyes, the biatch never offered me any. My stomach was rumbling so loud she could hear it, and I nearly passed out from low blood sugar. But I realized afterwards that the grapes were probably sour and I didn't really want them.

LOLWUT.  That was the most random thing I have read all day, but I LOLed.

I don't believe it was random. I read it as an allegory. Aesop comes to mind.

These interview sessions are boring as fark for the stars. They sit a room and interviewer after interviewer come in and ask the same questions over and over. It is similar to how they treat criminal suspects except it pays much better.

So to get someone who is off script probably makes her whole day.

I don't know about "awesome and down-to-earth." Her tone of voice with him is that sort of sarcastic/condescending faux-"friendliness" thing that high-status people sometimes use in dealing with clearly low-status people when they're forced to interact. On the surface, it sounds like it's expressing interest in what the person is saying, but the subtle connotation is "I can't believe you don't see how beneath me this all is." You hear the same thing in every high school hallway when the head cheerleader needs the dork from the AV club to give her a ride to the quarterback's house ("Now, Eggbert, what I don't get is is the hobbit a dwarf? . . . Oh, so are they different species or just different races? Uh huh... that's fascinating! You're so smart!")

The thing is, I'm not sure if the guy was that dorky genuinely, or whether he put on that fumbling personna to get her off guard and talking about stuff other than the movie. (Howard Stern does the same thing, but with the "drooling pervert" kind of personna). Every other interviewer left with the same "James Franco is great to work with, my character was complex, etc." bits, and this guy leaves with "I used to tend bar, I like Blue Moon, and I had these weird bit parts on Baywatch you didn't know about" stuff. So he's either a dork or he's brilliant, but she comes off mostly as the hot girl who knows she's hot.

That was awesome in a bottle...

I've been avoiding it all day because I didn't want to get busted watching a video at work. Now I must go kick myself for doing that. What a great interview, I have to say that she was great at making the guy feel like he mattered. Who cares if she was interested ort not, she made him feel more at ease, and rolled with it, rather than acting like a diva. She made this guy's year, and that's why she got this video circulated.

Seriously though, I believe her when she says that the standard video routine is getting boring as hell for her. She probably loved being able to just sit down and shoot the shiat.

I probably shouldn't judge since I really have no idea who she is. I didn't mean any snark, but I'm usually cynical and skeptical especially when a celeb does something that makes them look good.

I've probably just seen too many people who treated those less fortunate than them with disdain and only embraced them to demonstrate what a good person they are.

Notice how quickly she switched to answering all the things you'd expect her to answer even though he didn't ask the questions? That's because they get asked the same shiat 10 times a day on these press junkets. Guarantee she enjoyed this interview more than the other 9 repetitive wankfests she did that day.

Pretty much this.

2013-03-05 06:19:40 PM
The guy doing the interview was Chris Stark, co-host and friend of Scott Mills on BBC radio1. His '24 years at the tap end' is actually worth a listen. (while you're there, check out the christmas single. It's belatedly awesome)

Chris didn't know who he was going to interview until he was face-to-face with them. all he knew was that it was a hollywood A-lister, so he no chance to prepare person-or-movie-specific questions.

he's also a massive Mila fan, and has mentioned how much he'd like to meet her several times, so coming face to face with his crush obviously threw him for 6, so his awkwardness and demeanour are perfectly understandable.

Plus, as Mila gives away in her long spiel, she sits in the same chair answering the same questions over and over to people who think they're the first person to ask them, so to have a guy sitting before you talking about his mate Sir Dosser (Bish bash bosh) and watching soccer must have been a welcome respite, and she obviously relished the opportunity relax and have fun for 10 bloody minutes.

I reckon he's got her phone number, but he ain't telling

I found that great, especially because I think she was looking more at her handler than at the interviewer at that point. She basically took material that a boring interviewer would have wasted ten minutes of her life asking about and regurgitated it in about 60 seconds, just as a "FARK YOU" to her handler.

Sounds like she had a bad experience with Jagerbombs...or a good one.

Having quite a bit of experience interviewing people in the film business, I can say that you always get better material if you just start shooting the shiat with your subject. The fastest way to a boring interview is to ask questions like "What drew you to this role?" - which will be the 977th time the actor or actress has heard that question. You get even better results if you start off with a question that catches them completely off guard, but doesn't come completely out of left field, like embarrassing them with the fact that you saw some obscure thing they made before they were famous.

Having said that, I did choke once, with almost the exact same opening as this guy. Charlize Theron. I had a bunch of great questions for her, but the first got twisted in my mouth into something about how pretty she was, and I just came off like a creep. That was an uncomfortable 25 minutes.

On the other hand, I blew an interview with Laura Linney once - ran out of questions and hadn't really gotten into a winging-it rhythm yet with her. I ended up hemming and hawing, and finally saying, "I got nothin'," which just cracked her up. We talked about completely unrelated stuff (like the fact that I went to high school with the DP on the movie she was promoting), had a great time, and ended with her saying, "Next time I'm in town, you'd better come prepared, my friend!"

I mean, that's kinda the point about Mila Kunis for me. She isn't bullshiatty fakey looking. Just a mostly normal, non glamour modely, on the cute side of normal looking girl. I would probably accidentally try and buy her a beer if I saw her alone at a bar, but now i at least kniw to make it a Blue Moon, hell, bring me obe too! Because I suck at recognizing people in public. Sometimes close friends and family, lol.
