Nuke the whales, because you gotta nuke something.

PETA released a press release, which read:

"Whaling--that is, shooting whales with harpoons and leaving them to struggle for an hour or more before they die or are hacked apart while they are still alive--may seem like something out of history books-"

In response, Ubisoft released a press release, which read:

"PTEA endorses historical accuracy of Assassin's Creed 4."

Whale Oil Processing [Excerpt] - By Ebenezer Greaves

"Out at sea, they secure the beast with hooks, with lines cast from the main-ship and from several smaller boats. Buoys keep the whale from diving deep. Once it's caught, a larger hook is driven through the tail, which is used to hoist the creature up through the chute. They moan and bellow for some time as the men get them onto the deck, then heft them into the scaffolding overhead. The ship adjusts its prow and returns to port in Dunwall, where the crew works on the great creature, slicing off the fattiest parts while it still lives."

now that was a game that i advised everyone play if just to learn how to build a world. Every glance, every inch of wall space, every interaction did more to create a living, intriguing world than many games accomplish in multiple releases

Wait til the Sea Shepards hear of this.

Yes because an activity that was a prime historical moment done in a game that often revels in injecting the player through the avatar into those historical moments is the EXACT same thing as hauling a whale onto a tanker ship and gutting it live there on the deck.

Has anyone told them about Far Cry 3?

PETA needs to be labeled as a terrorist organization and soon.  Their BS is getting way out of hand.

They are already up to #4? Don't they have 5 more shiatty pseudo-games to release based off #3?

2013-03-05 02:26:31 PM
Yes, whaling is and was a horrible thing. No, shiatheads like PETA and the Whale Wars farksticks are not helping, and the latter in particular are doing far, FAR more harm than good.

Oh, and no, this is nothing more than yet ANOTHER bit of attention whoring from PETA.

2013-03-05 02:26:35 PM
But I guess Call of Duty is okay because only humans are being killed.

it's too bad that the game was hilariously easy thanks to blink.

Nah, they're doing pure DLC for that stuff this time. Also, it's not useful to the story to do that here.

They did whine about his mistreatment of raccoons/tanukis, as I recall.

I work in the game industry, though I don't work directly on games these days.  If I were working on a game, I'd do everything I could to include content that PETA would all annoyed over.  It's called free advertising.

Murdering people is totally ok in their book, however.

Pardon me for attempting to apply logic here, but do they think pretending this sort of thing never happened somehow helps their cause, assuming that is, that their cause is not simply self-aggrandizement?

For what it's worth, I'm against modern whaling, but the whale wars guys make me root for the Japanese.  I also think that stuff like that is counter productive, it seems to me that a powerful incentive for the Japanese to keep doing what they do is the international opposition to it.

well no, i wouldn't advise them to play it for the challenge, which is too bad because the game made me fascinated about the world it created.

PETA is still around???  Well, good.  Let them make a big deal over this minor detail and let others remind the public that while PETA is biatching about whaling in a video game they are a bigger threat to animals than Hitler was to the Jews.

um, the japanease aren't whaling to thumb their nose at other nations, they're doing it to eat the whales because for some reason they think they taste good. if people stopped opposing them, they'd kill and eat even more of them.

PETA and whatever groups that protests homosexuality in Bioware games and violence in GTA games should be thanked by the video game industry. Their oversized novelty outrage draws a lot of free publicity for those games.

My understanding is that no one actually really likes the meat, but the industry is heavily subsidized because of tradition or some such, and the hardliners who like it enjoy thumbing their noses at whiny gaijin.  Could be wrong.

Far Cry 3 even rewards you for hunting rare animals. Someone better tell PETA so we can get the game (which kicks ass) some more free advertising.

Plant Rights Activist: it's too bad that the game was hilariously easy thanks to blink.

Agreed. But I remember reading an article where the devs indicated that actually planned on this. The game was all about player choice - you can either run n' gun, or take the stealth route, and each is valid and rewarding in different ways. So, in giving you potentially game-breaking powers that really greased the rails if you wanted that, they trusted the player enough NOT to take the buff if they wanted their curve a little steeper.

Bethesda does the same thing. Spamming levels and crafting insanely powerful gear were pretty straightforward things to do in Skyrim. And yeah, a lot of trolls biatched that "X makes it too easy and breaks the game!" But nobody's holding a gun to anyone's head and FORCING them to do that.

I just wish Gearbox had the same philosophy. I boss-farmed my ASS off to pick up the Conference Call and Bee Shield combo, since the game was supposedly all about comically overpowered tank builds, especially in the higher levels. And I enjoyed being pretty unstoppable. Or, I did for a WHILE, at least...until Gearbox realized people were having too much fun, and nerfed the holy living $#!+ out of the gear.

I'm STILL irritated about that.

the fluke is considered a rare and pricey delicacy and is often eaten raw (you can get 200$ per kilo for whale fluke selling it in japan.) they also sell some of the lesser cuts, but the fluke is where the real money is at

Latinwolf: Their logic when it comes to pets is that animals are better off dead than being the pet of some human.

Actually, their logic, like most of animal rescues, is that they simply don't have the funding. No one wants to kill a fark ton of kittens every summer, but you have to do it, because you can't afford to care for them, and it's needlessly cruel to let them live horrible, stunted lives IN YOUR SHELTER in sub par conditions. You have to make a choice, and that means you end up putting down the sick animals, or the pregnant ones, or simply ones who you can't keep around because you need space. I'm lucky enough to volunteer at a no-kill shelter, but that doesn't mean you should vilify someone for doing an unpleasant but absolutely necessary job.
