alizeran: ristst: After looking at this article I'm even *more* confused as to what the fark a "meme" is.Memetic. A self propagating idea. Dont be distracted by the medium. I think it was a Dawkins book in the late seventies. Didn't he coin "memetics"?/i, too, have some capital letters that follow my name, but yours are worth more in scrabble, so...

Gotta few more - MCP, MCSA (couple different OS versions), & MBA for starts.

But all the computer certs in the world don't mean squat if ya can't get the job done....and there are a lot of what we call "paper certs" out there (folks who manage to pass the cert exams with no actual job experience).

Plus some of the absolute best system admins I know have ZERO certifications.

brap: Titanius Anglesmith: We used to use the farting preacher "Robert Tilton" as the mascot for our public access cable show back in the early 90's

Small world.  I had a public access cable show.  I think it was the 80s/90s equivalent of "I'm in a band."

Huh?  The 90s equivalent of "I'm in a band" was... "I'm in a band."

/was in a band
//along with everybody else who was cool  :D
///a public access show sounds pretty sweet, too, though

3rdtimearound: Finally a positive drug story!

If only Bill Hicks had seen this video when he was alive.

I'd be surprised if he didn't.  It started circulating 8 years before he died, if I'm reading correctly.

timujin: sid244: Rockstone: The internet is much older than 1986.... did not become popular or commercially available until the early 90's, Metacrawler was your search engine, and you installed NetScape b/c IE sucked.

Netscape?  I remember going from Lynx to Mosaic...

puckrock2000: I used to play this one on my college radio comedy show circa 1985.

Can of Poison Meat

That was what I was originally thinking of when I saw TFA.

Psychopusher: I like the video.  But is it me, or does its creator sound like an insufferable artsy douche?

I agree. I think the video is funny as hell, and he's not wrong that there is a difference between cat photos and what he did. But what was the political message of his video? "Just say no" is silly? Well...okay. That message wasn't terribly original, even if the vehicle he chose for it was. I think the "sharp words" the author of the article promised are more her own interpretation...but he does appear to take himself too seriously.

1986?  Yeah, I was too stoned/drunk/bolivianmarchingpowdered to remember such a speach, but I do remember marching in the street in '87 against that bastard Constitution shredder Ronnie Reagan.

Quantum Apostrophe: Cool! Now we just need to track down whoever did the Max Headroom incident.

During Horror of Fang Rock?  That was Captain Midnight.  I have that on a VHS tape somewhere.

So if it wasn't for the 1980s, Ronald Regan, drug PSAs and that guy we wouldn't have memes?  OK, cool.

You mean people mashed up audio and video before the internet?

Don't tell the Church of the SubGenius!

And whatever you do, definitely do not listen to  Episode #1400 of The Hour of Slack (rerun of Episode #849 "Media Barrage 5" - weekly since 1985).

Mark Ratner: Psychopusher: I like the video.  But is it me, or does its creator sound like an insufferable artsy douche?

It's not just you. I kind of wanted to punch him in the face by the end of the article.

This is what it took to be really originally creative and funny back before the internets. You basically had to be an insufferable artsy douche from New York that people kind of wanted to punch in the face.
