scottydoesntknow: and that EA told Visceral to bring in a wider audience than previous series entries did by focusing more on action than horror.

[media.giantbomb.com image 750x1500]

Dead Space Fans: "I really like the horror aspect.  Makes it stand out from being another generic sci-fi shooter."

EA: "Great news!  We're turning it into a generic sci-fi shooter!"

Dead Space Fans: "Pass."

Generic Shooter Fans: "Bro, I played the first one.  It's totally farkin' slow and there's no killstreaks.  Plus, the story is all weird and shiat.  Don't get it."

EA: "HOW COULD THIS HAVE POSSIBLY BACKFIRED?!?"

There's a Dead Space 3?  1 and 2 were pretty good, never heard of 3.

How can this be?  Who doesn't like micro transactions, pre-order exclusives, and poorly ported controls?  Though, honestly, a game has to be DAMN good for me to consider buying something with EA's stink on it...

DAMMIT. I feel personally responsible for this. Dead Space is one of my favorite franchises, but I haven't picked this one up yet, since I just moved and cash is tight.

I hope they re-think this.

Isn't Borderlands an EA title? Sure, it's got that stuff you mentioned (though not micro-transactions, but a subscription), but it's a solid title even without the BS.

// also, once you realize that DS1 is horror/FPS and not "Call of Duty: Spacefreighter", it's an AWESOME game (for some reason, I couldn't get through 2, though)

// I used to call it "Alien: The Video Game" because that's what it farking IS

Genre switch + Pile all your annoying monetization gimmicks on without decreasing the base price + Army of 2 nonsense in my single-player franchise = you're gonna lose some customers, man.

//That said, that they weren't gonna outright cancel it should have been obvious well before the correction was issued.  If they didn't have big names to tag onto shiatty games to wring dying-franchise revenue from, EA's entire business model would fail.  They're basically doing with video game studios what Bain Capital did with everything else.

Well, games have been cribbing off the movie industry for everything else over the last decade, don't know why they wouldn't adopt the stupid sales metrics, too.

DS1 was a masterpiece. And there was a huge amount of buzz about DS2 because people were excited about it. EA took the horror out of DS3, made it a coop game (further killing any horror element), and didn't sell it via Steam. There was literally no one talking about it. So who cares if there's no DS4?

DS3 isn't on Steam. EA has abandoned Steam for their own platform, and all their newer games are exclusive to Origin. Same thing happened to Mass Effect.

I don't think it's a popular opinion, but I liked talking Isaac from DS2 more than the silent suit from 1. The set pieces were fantastic in both. I really liked the first 2. However, I'm having a hard time caring that 3 even exists. When I saw Mr Tagalong in the trailer I was instantly done. Why does EA suck so bad? Has gutting something good to appeal to a wider audience ever really worked for them?

No:  Gearbox and 2K, not EA.

Not really.  That "subscription" is a "season pass" (for Borderlands 2) which got/gets you the big-name DLC (mission/map packs) at a set, discounted price (minor DLC (costumes) is not included).  A bunch of other games are going a similar route.

but it's a solid title even without the BS.

This is true.

Just a guess, but I'd think they'd want to know whether or not they're going to do a sequel before they reassign the dev teams to other projects. If they decide they want a sequel after 6 months, there may be delays in reassembling the developers because they're committed to other projects for the year.

How do you people find DS 1 and 2 fun? I played DS3 and the fact they made all ammo generic is one of the best parts. Now I run around with the ripper with absolute impunity, never worrying about ammo, and always being fully stocked on healing items.

DS1 and 2 are just an exercise in bullshiat resource management. How is a game supposed to be scary when I'm spending most of my time looking at lame ass inventory screens rather than butting boot to deformed ass?

So, they added a tag-a-long character and took out the horror elements? They should have called it Resident Evil 5 instead of Dead Space 3.

I played this game back when it was called Doom 3.

The problem is that big producers keep trying to chase prior successes by homogenizing their products rather than looking at what makes each of them unique.   Ohh yes, lets forget the horror element and make a sci fi action shooter. That's sure to beunlike every halo clone, ever...
All the worse that they follow up this mediocrity by nickle and dimeing their customers to death.

Stop trying to milk the system and just focus on making good products.

1) The main character is not a Space Marine. He's an engineer, and his weapons are improvised from mining tools.

Y'know...that would actually explain Resident Evil's departure from horror:  they saw Amnesia and said "Fark it.  There's no way we can top that.  May as well make it an action game now."

Nope, it's just more difficult to be scary with such high fidelity graphics and co-op. Fear is also an atmosphere that can't be changed by modulating spawn points, unlike the sort of violent glee that most shooters attempt to capture. Extra Credits did a pretty good show on this a while back.

2013-03-05 05:46:55 PM
I am enjoying dead space 3.  Its less scary, but you don't need to do co-op if you don't want (I don't do it).  I thought the microtransactions would bother me, but I am finding that I never needed them.  I was able to find everything I needed in game, not with farming but with exploring like I did in the first two games.  If some kid wants to spend an additional $10 in the start of the game to make it easier it doesn't bother me.  I like the scarcity of good weapons early, it makes you feel like you are progressing as you play.

Also the weapons building system is really fun.  I was apprehensive at first but enjoy it.

I'm almost certain this same thing is going to happen to SimCity.

EA releases a product that in no way resembles what fans were actually asking for with a bunch of tacked on crap like online-DRM and microtransactions, and then says "I guess there really wasn't any interest in this genre."

2013-03-05 06:34:24 PM
I thought DS1 was awsome. Unfortunately, DS2 could never really grab my attention. I kind of forced myself to complete the game, but it felt like a grind.  And now my buddy wants me to get DS3 so we can coop.

But frankly, I don't want another grind fest, nor do I want to purchase the game from Origin.  If they offered it on Steam, I would re-consider.  I think they lost a lot of potential sales by not offering it on Steam.

I liked how they learned virtually nothing from Blizzard's D3 release day debacle.

2013-03-05 07:37:46 PM
I'm mainly staying away from Dead Space because...

I liked Penumbra and Amnesia, which are supposedly in the same genre as Dead Space.  Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw loved those, which suggests that I can trust his judgment on them, and he **HATED** each and every Dead Space game with a passion:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/333-Dea d- Space
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/2737-De ad -Space-2

/Seriously, I think the only reviews I've seen that are worse than these are the ones for Spunkgarleweewee games.  Kane and Lynch, Call of Duty come to mind.

I'll say it again from the other thread.

A. DS3s ending is pretty much already the end of the franchise/trilogy
B. The studio and EA have said the rumors are false.
C. Co-op makes the game 10 times better, better than the useless DS2 multiplayer.

lousyskater: I liked how they learned virtually nothing from Blizzard's D3 release day debacle.

They haven't learned anything since the same god-damn thing happened with Half-Life 2 and online-only activation back in frickin' 2004.
My half-activated copy that Steam would tell me is activated, but the game wouldn't actually let me play because of server issues took so long for them to resolve I had to pirate the game to actually play it.

Sergeant Grumbles: I'm almost certain this same thing is going to happen to SimCity.

EA releases a product that in no way resembles what fans were actually asking for with a bunch of tacked on crap like online-DRM and microtransactions, and then says "I guess there really wasn't any interest in this genre."

I really hope Volition gets picked up by someone (except EA).  Unrealistic sales figures aside, I really enjoyed Darksiders 1 and 2 and hope that the series isn't dead.

Volition was taken in by the people who made Dead Island. The people who made Darksiders were forced to dissolve because there was no interest in their company during the auction.

Well damn.  Here's hoping people more talented than myself (people with any talent) manage to get their hands on the franchise ip.

I'm liking DS3.
The weapons making is fun as you can mix the add-ons and circuits up to make some nifty combos.I like having a definite scarcity of resources as it makes your choices matter at least in the beginning chapters.  I didn't think i'd enjoy the co-op play but i am surprisingly getting a real kick out of playing with the brother in law and his kid.

I will say that it is missing the shiat your pants scares like the first one had though.
