Well, the property is pretty.

It's sort of cool, but looks too institutional for a living place. It would make a cool clubhouse or hotel.

I think it looks like a golf hat.  And Hope did love golf.

Up until the late 1940s, Bob Hope was the closest thing American pop culture got to edgy.

Crap, that's swank! And the included photo of Hope shows him in the snazziest tweed suit ever.

I think it'd be pretty cool to turn the area into some kind of golf course or something. With an expansive wet bar, obviously.

It's a hole.  Not that it really matters.  Gives you a nice open air courtyard on the roof of the enclosed living area in the middle.  It's pretty much a smaller two story house with a really big concrete structure around it.

There's been a rumor going round that he and Dolores never lived there, but rather used it as a party space and planned to turn it into a museum after their deaths.

Given that they held onto their two earlier houses in Palm Springs (one bought in the 1930s, the other in the 1950s), it wouldn't surprise me if it was true.

unfarkingbelievable: Meanwhile, I would hate to be underneath that mammoth cement overhang. What happens when it crumbles and falls?

It's monolithic reinforced concrete; it's not going anywhere.

The roof was originally wood, but the house caught fire right before it was originally finished and they had to start from scratch.  The fire lead to the concrete in version II.

When it was done, Dolores hired a Hollywood decorator to fill the place with Early American furniture and the architect promptly disowned the whole project.

Stunning: The property was specially designed to take advantage of the glorious natural landscape

Having lived before in Palm Springs for several years, I can attest that it costs a lot of money to maintain that glorious natural landscape in the middle of the f*cing desert.

Indeed. Retro-futurism isn't meh--it's awesome. A reminder of a time when most of America was still optimistic about the future.

Wasn't Jackie Treehorn's house a Lautner design?

497.5 Feet of Rope: Wasn't Jackie Treehorn's house a Lautner design?

Oh hell yes! That's the Sheats-Goldstein house, and the guy who owns it is even weirder than Jackie Treehorn.  He's just torn town a Lautner house next door so he can build an addition Lautner designed but the Sheats never built.  http://la.curbed.com/archives/2011/07/inside_john_lautners_dangerous_ s heatsgoldstein_house.php

John Lautner also designed the house in Palm Springs that was the location for the finale of Diamonds are Forever, the Elrod house, which is probably my favorite.

People will probably think I'm nuts, but I love how warm and inviting poured concrete can be when used properly.  I can only think of a handful of architects who have pulled it off: Lautner, his teacher, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Lou Kahn.
