Why is today more interesting in soccer? Or is this one of those deals where you have to already know a lot about soccer before it is intriguing?

damnit, if you want to have a soccer thread then have a soccer thread.  Don't invite haters in.  Oh yeah, you want page clicks.

From what I can tell, it's two of the best, most historic clubs in the world, run by what are considered to be two of the top managers in the world. Both sides have few, if any injuries. It's an elimination game for one of the biggest sports championships in the world. And to top it all off, one side is led by Shrek himself while the other side is led by person with a sparkly purse.

/Also the person with the sparkly purse once faked being kicked in the junk by Shrek in a successful effort to get him ejected from the World Cup.

You've more of less described indoor soccer, other than they still have goalies, but with the pinball action on a hockey rink sized field, the scores are generally more like 15-12.    Which is why I am somewhat surprised that indoor soccer wasn't able to hold on to its actually higher popularity over outdoor soccer in the US in the 80s/early 90s.   Now, MLS is pretty healthy, and indoor soccer in the US is about as popular as Indoor Lacrosse.

Agreed. I think the problem is the size of the field. It creates a scenario where there is too much running and passing  compared to shots on goal. I am also not fond of the fact that people are not made aware of how much injury time (or whatever it is called) is being added to the game.

That being said, I don't hate soccer but I am not going to out of my way to watch it. That means that I am not going to wake up at 7:30am on a Sunday to watch a PL game or watch it on my computer because US TV is not broadcasting the game.

Soccer should be played like dodgeball.

Get a ball kicked to your face? You're out!
Get a ball kicked to any part of your body other than a leg? You're out!

Goal! Everyone comes back onto the field.

No silly diving anymore, it'll be evasive maneuvers. Dead bodies can be used as shields for 5 minutes.

2013-03-05 11:01:19 AM
They should eliminate offside once you get to a certain point in the field.

I saw a Barca game a week or so ago.  A player was no more than 5 meters from goal on a slight angle and crossed the ball across the goal mouth to an open player to tapped it in.. but he was a quarter of a step offside.

How the fark are you offside that close to the goal?

It's a really stupid rule.  I understand you don't want cherry picking, but once the ball is below the top of the box, there should be no more offside.

1. Eliminate the Quarterback
2, Allow all players of the offense as many passes in as many directions as they want
3. It'll be like an actual sport and for more than 3 people

Yeah...I still think when Dortmund is "on" (I mean playing at their best), they're the most entertaining club around.

But I'm watching MU/RM today regardless. Too many Man U fans in my office anyways.

1,000 games for Giggsy.  Could he make it sublime by scoring?  I get goosebumps thinking about it.

Ronaldo and Di Maria scare the crap out of me.  Well, so do Ozil, Alonso and..ok they're all phenomenal!  The fact that Carrick might be tasked with helping to mark Ronaldo is slightly worrying as he's not the fastest player.  I'm not Rio's biggest fan - I used to be, he was simply great, but age and the on-going little injuries have really taken their toll on him I think and Higuain is difficult to spell let alone defend against.  Will Vidic play?  Is his knee up to it?  I think both Cleverly and Giggs are better players than Khedira.

I read something yesterday, possibly the BBC article about how to mark Ronaldo, and the writer said that United should try to needle Sergio Ramos, see if they can get him carded early so he's a bit wary.  He's not renowned for holding back.

Rooney and RvP need to be at their best tonight.  I don't care how good you are, RvP is deadly if he gets chances.  If Rooney can feed him good possession then he's going to be a real threat.  If it's not working though, I think Hernandez rather than Welbeck.  His movement in the box is better and i think he's a better poacher than Welbeck.

Christ I'm nervous.

This. I clicked expecting to see some fantastic play - only to find out the game hasn't even happened yet.

The only thing worse than watching soccer matches is the people who watch them and tell others they should watch too.

I'd rather watch a fight to the death by snails who start at 10 (human-sized) paces.

So now we're actively inviting them into matchday threads? Seriously?

2013-03-05 12:20:29 PM
Is this where they shrink the field, freeze it, give everyone a stick, substitute a puck for a ball and have them play on ice skates?    Or where they replace all the players with naked super models?

No?

Then no it isn't.

HavocMike's Half-Serious, Tongue in Cheek Suggestions for Making Soccer Acceptable in America that Stupid Farkers Will Argue With
#1. 90 minutes? WTF? Everyone knows any timed sport is 60 minutes.
#2. The ball goes out of play, the clock stops. This eliminates the completely arbitrary "extra time" situation.
#3. The field is too goddamn big. Cut that shiat down by 33%.
#4. Now, there's too many fools running around on a smaller field. Eliminate 4 on each side.
#5. Hockey rules on penalties. Power plays!

Indoor soccer had a lot of things right. We should give it another chance.

Yeah it's not like people go out of their way to make fun of the sport. Oh wait...

I do agree it was rather stupid to put a headline like that on a website populated by 30-50 year old white dudes that aren't very athletic (on average). This is why we get wrestling threads that are popular and hockey fans that somehow think their sport is god's gift to everyone even though MLS has a better TV deal.

So, they stopped fixing matches and now continue play during an injury/flop?

Ha!  That didn't take long.  So, I'm incapable of having passion for anything because I don't 'get' soccer?  Probably.   I will never understand why soccer fan cannot accept that some folks are just not into their sport.  Geezus, just get over it.  Or don't, because it's pretty hilarious when you get all butthurt about it.

See the difference?
