Florida is underlain mostly by carbonates like limestone and dolostone which are dissolved over thousands or millions of years by groundwater made slightly acidic by interaction with carbon dioxide when it was meteoric water. The groundwater pumping is more of a trigger, you empty a subterrainian cavern and the overlying materials are easier to collapse. There are phosphate deposits, which account for the large strip mines east of Tampa, but they aren't considered to be involved in sinkhole formation as far as I'm aware. The uranium in these phosphate deposits is directly related to the radon issue, being a daughter product of natural uranium decay.

There are phosphate deposits, which account for the large strip mines east of Tampa, but they aren't considered to be involved in sinkhole formation as far as I'm aware. The uranium in these phosphate deposits is directly related to the radon issue, being a daughter product of natural uranium decay.

Being a former Florida resident, I recall when several sinkholes developed in Winter Park, near Orlando in the early 80s.  I was aware of the above to a lesser extent (didn't know anything about the radon issue). My assumption was that Florida was being overdeveloped and depending too much on pumping groundwater out for lawns and such.  This, I surmised, led to saltwater intrusion closer to the coasts (making the tap water hard to drink).  That led to a conclusion that for Florida to sustain, those caverns need to be supported by water and thus, a LOT of rain is needed often or a few Hurricanes now and again to saturate the soil and refill the underground resoivoir.  But I never followed up on that. I think in Florida, you may be called upon to pick your poison....and I think it might get worse as this continues.

However, upon actually reading about this issue, it seems that Florida is a goner either way - most sinkholes appear to be accelerated in development by lots of rain.  Wasn't going to move back.  I wonder if the state is mapped for the karst formations, as they are called.  Are the northern parts of the state relatively safe from sinkholes?

Interestingly enough, this is a fantastic case of Caveat Emptor.  "Sinkholes affect so many properties in Florida that the legislature in 2011 changed the law to make it harder to claim sinkhole damages. "Over the years the [sinkhole] costs to insurance companies have been increasing at an extraordinary rate, because the legislature prevented companies from charging rates in line with the risk," says Mr. Randazzo. "It finally reached the point where the insurance companies won the day and got the legislature to change the law, significantly weakening the sinkhole protections in the state of Florida."

So if you don't know you bought a sinkhole, too bad.  Good job, Rick Scott.  Your residents are safe in the arms of Jeebuz.
