Tommy Moo: I know it's a longshot, but it would be so awesome if this dude washed out somewhere and clawed his way through a cave and showed up filthy and pissed off at his own funeral.

I read a wild story from back when they were digging New York CIty's aqueducts; one worker was a couple hundred feet down in a pressurized shaft, they had a blowout, a couple of his buddies were killed...but he gets forced into a crevice by the overpressure, then forced up through a seam, and literally squirts up out of the ground on a 20' spray of water.

Couple ruptured eardrums, but he survived.

We get a rarer, minor version of these sinkholes in New England; once in awhile, you'll have something built over a big Colonial-era pile of stumps that finally decides to rot away.

Happened to a gal in my old Reserve unit, cost her a bundle.  Fortunately it was under her driveway, not her house...

FTA: The day's most solemn moment came at 4 p.m., when demolition stopped and workers joined family members for a brief ceremony. The many flowers and notes that had been left in front of the house were loaded into a tractor's bucket, which swung slowly toward the sinkhole and dropped the materials into the hole. There was applause from across the street.

Anyone else find that funny? Funny on a number of levels?

Applause during the days most solemn moment. A solemn moment involving a noisy piece of earth moving equipment dropping teddy bears and flowers into a hole? I could go on.

Levels.

It's kinda easy to see it all here. Brother runs in through the door on the left after guy's bed slides under him on the right. Damn.

Shadune: Alex Broughton Butt Chugger: Anal Tobacco Furnace: djh0101010: Full page popup ad and 11 page article with a paragraph each? Fark that. Why do so many sites do Mobile totally wrong?

There are many reasons. A large reason is because it is a very new platform and developers are still in training mode.

Sure, couldn't be the fact that with 10 more pages per article you get 10x more advertising revenue. It's because they are newbies. Gotcha.

The internet does not work that way!

So you're saying multiple page articles and slideshows exist solely to annoy us?

vudukungfu: Global warming, rising water tables. Sink holes.

Go ahead and blame the Humans again. Actually I heard it wsd the humans drinking all the water and lowering the water table that caused it.

Elegy: I pulled the LiDAR for this area. Green dot is the house, red arrows are pre-existing karst features. Link

One of the problems with how they develop in this problem is how they treat sinks. You can tell the area around the house is pretty terraformed. Basically they'll backfill any small sinkholes and build over them. Larger ones are squared off and used as retention ponds.

Anyways, there's a chance this was more than sheer dumb luck - or at least dumb luck of a different kind. If the guy had a water leak under his house, it could have acted as a trigger by washing out the soil under he house and into the sinkhole.

Great technical article on sinkholes in Florida: Link

No, that would be Centralia, PA.

TommyymmoT: Those must some great building codes they have there.
The house was built on a concrete slab with no basement, and I saw no rebar in that picture.
What kind of cheap ass builder pours a slap without rebar?

The home builder killed that guy just as much as the sink hole did.

If you build a home with a basement anywhere on the Gulf Coast be prepared for a nice swimming hole under your living room, or if the basement is completely water tight, be prepared when your buoy of a house starts to pop out of the ground.
