FTA: There has been no definitive word as to whether the hole will be filled or whether the property could be built on again. But some experts say the fact that the sinkhole claimed a life, and that his body is expected to remain below the surface make rebuilding less likely.

This is Florida.  Some sleaze bag developer will buy the area, give it a fancy name like River Edge Estates, and build a shiat load of cheap homes on it.  then they'll disappear into the pockets of the politicians they feed on, never to be heard of again.

Pretty much. Someone will try to put a memorial on the area one day and the HOA will have it removed. Of course, then the entire neighborhood will disappear into a terrifying poltergeisty vortex, but hey, who didn't see that coming.

Actually, looking at the evidence, that may have already happened.

Gotta imagine the killer sinkhole problem will put a real damper on property values.

There are many reasons. A large reason is because it is a very new platform and developers are still in training mode.

When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a house on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest house in all of Florida.

People mock those of use who live n barrier islands, but at least we get the chance to evacuate when a hurricane comes, instead of being swallowed up into the bowels of the earth with no warning at all.

Still don't understand why they didn't bring in a crane, saw through the wall or roof and lower someone down to try to help/save the guy. Seems they didn't really have any urgency to get to the guy. If the area was unstable I think they could have done this from a safe area away and lowered someone down with a crane.

elvindeath: Seriously ... wtf.  Certainly makes you think when it's your time, it's your time.

Act of God type death, like being struck by lightning. I know a guy whose teenage daughter was killed that way on a softball field, in front of her family. Can you imagine if something like this happened to a hero to the devout? How would they interpret it? Why couldn't this have happened under Limbaugh's Florida crib?

We have lots of smaller sinkholes in metro Atlanta, mostly from builders who bury their construction debris rather than dispose of it properly. Several have caved in the neighborhood where I have a rental property. I've been lucky so far. I imagine I'd be liable in some fashion if my tenant was hurt.

Yeah it seems like they could rig some sort of device up to investigate the area. But eh, he's dead, why worry about it?

2013-03-04 09:48:35 PM
Those must some great building codes they have there.
The house was built on a concrete slab with no basement, and I saw no rebar in that picture.
What kind of cheap ass builder pours a slap without rebar?

The home builder killed that guy just as much as the sink hole did.

Good to know there is a set value of a life.

Florida white trash is worth less than a crane rental or an hour with a helicopter.

I don't know much about construction, but I do know that very very few Florida homes have basements. Not exactly practical.

Yeah probably not practical to have a basement in a state that is notorious for sinkholes.
