Ive seen New York rats. Big? yes, but not nearly as big as a dog or a cat-- unless the dog or cat is the exact same size as a rat.

I'm not much into killing things.
But I get bored at night. I could take on some PT work sniping for rats. Logistically though, Iran wouldn't be a good commute.

Btw someone should mention that Tehran being overrun by rats means Washington D.C. and Tehran have something in common.  And, no, I am not talking about dirty politicians.  It's been awhile since I've hung out in the area but I assume it's still true that you just need to walk the streets of D.C. at night and you'll realize the place is crawling with rats.

jayhawk88: Ten teams of sharpshooters armed with rifles equipped with infra-red sights have bagged more than 2,000 of the brutish rodents in recent weeks, city officials told state media. That's a drop in the ocean: Iran's rat population easily outnumbers the sprawling capital's 12 million inhabitants. The city council is now boosting the number of sniper squads to 40, officials said.

This was my favorite part. We deployed snipers, and they killed 2000 rats, a drop in the bucket. So let's quadruple the number of snipers, and we'll then have 4 drops in our bucket.

To be fair, there was already one drop so this should bring them up to 5.

When I was young I used to work at a restaurant downtown, and to park in dark alleys behind the hustle and bustle of the city. Once I was going back to my car and I heard a metallic noise in the direction of the small alley between trash cans I just passed by. Then I saw the trash move a bit, something was in there. Figured it was a dog, or a big cat, or even a raccoon. Then I saw it, it was the size of a small dog, or a big kitty cat or a normal sized raccoon. Low on the ground, you have to remember it was dark. I didnt pay it too much mind, as I was used to raccoons where I lived in the suburbs.

Then i saw the tail, it was a HUGE RAT! Bigger than the one on the shoulder on this thread.

It wasnt paying me any mind, so i left him alone. Got into my car and locked the doors.

if only the iranians weren't denied their second amendment rights this wouldn't be a problem.

The sheriff in Jefferson Parish used to have his SWAT guys roam the canals at night to pop nutria. I think Dave Attell rode with them in an episode of Insomniac.

Meanwhile, if it's really true that there are over 12 million rats in the city, how many are being born ever day? Rats are sexually mature at 4-5 weeks of age, breed year round, have 10-12 per shot, and gestate in 22 days. Females are ready to breed again with 24 hours. It's staggering to think of how many rats you would have to kill per day just to keep pace.

Oznog: I'm skeptical.  Wikipedia lists the  Rattus pyctoris (Himalayan Rat, Turkestan Rat)  as indigenous to Iran.  There's no note of them being an exceptionally large rat.  There's no pics to corroborate Iran's claim of "cat-sized rats".

Really if you have more food laying out, you don't get giant rats, you get more rats.  Many grain silos and warehouses have been pillaged and they get to eat without limit, but they don't readily exceed the species' max size.
There are no rats this large- there's NUTRIA (coypu), which are rodents, but not RATS.  Nutria are 11-20lbs.

Huh.  You might have the answer, there.  They've already invaded Florida.

The Gambian pouched rat (Cricetomys gambianus), also known as the African giant pouched rat, is a nocturnal pouched rat of the giant pouched rat genus Cricetomys. It is among the largest muroids in the world, growing up to about 0.9 metres (3 ft) long including their tail which makes up half their length

Not really all that great in urban environments. Ideal solution would be a .22 PCP air rifle with polymag predator pellets. Plenty of power to take out vermin at an acceptable range but a a whole lot less downrange worries. Normal plank is usually sufficient as a backstop. Something like this should do the trick:

That looks like so much fun. I think Iran is missing some tourist dollars

To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower.
