So, in late 2012, the Iranian news agency <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/28/world/iran-news-age ncy-duped/index.html" target="_blank">FARS excitedly reported on the results of a Gallup poll that revealed that the majority of rural white Americans would, if given the opportunity, vote for Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over Barack Obama.

Well, we do know a lot more about Imadinnerjacket, and he IS more trustworthy. Oh, and he actually loves America.

Or 5 stories that weren't fact checked and ran anyway. Is it truly a lie on the part of the media if they are just gullible enough to believe someone else's bullshiat?

FTFA "

These stories go viral on the Internet all the time -- you'll go to Fark.com and see http://www.vaticancrimes.us/2013/01/evangelical-pastor-convinced-follo wers.html" target="a">a story about a pastor in Brazil who convinced his congregation that his sperm was sacred, and it will spread to thousands of sites before somebody finally http://www.aporeemfoco.com.br/abrenoticia.asp?id=2965" target="a">tracks down the Spanish-language parody site it originated from. But that's the Internet -- you'd think actual news outlets would have a slightly better bullshiat filter."

Not sure if we should be offended or not.

I got bit by the one from a few years back from the Hoosier Gazette about how having kids lowers your IQ.

I think even CNN picked it up at one point.

The debunking is here http://www.snopes.com/humor/iftrue/kinsey.asp.

A little journalistic research might have revealed that they speak Portuguese in Brazil, not Spanish (at least not on the parody site the Cracked author refers to as "Spanish-language").

titwrench: Or 5 stories that weren't fact checked and ran anyway. Is it truly a lie on the part of the media if they are just gullible enough to believe someone else's bullshiat?

It's not even, I think, that they're gullible. The most important thing about news stories is that they're entertaining or push the readers buttons.

It's shocking, but most of the blogs I read are more trustworthy.

I remember a south American channel (Bolivian?) that was pranked by being given a scene from Lost's plane snapping footage and it was reported as exclusive black box footage.

As long as I get to comment on the article, I really don't care. The thing that I hate about the Buzzfeed ones is precisely the lack of ability to snark about them. The Cracked links are fine, IMO.

National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice claimed no-one "could have predicted that they would try to use an airplane as a missile".

Because true americans don't know their own history.

The Bojinka plot

Timothy McVeigh was arrested with pages of "The Turner Diaries" in his pockets, which ends with the protagonist crashing an airliner into the Pentagon.

The book has been jerk-off material for domestic terrorists since its release.

And then you have the Tom Clancy one where a plane crashes into the White House to make Mary Sue Ryan President by default. And no doubt hundreds of others, its hardly a massive leap of imagination.

I am not surprised.

Some time back I had an article green--lighted in which it said Best Korea intended to pull the Moon out of orbit, tow it back to Pyongyang on rockets and set it on a pedestal as a monument.

About 15% of the Farkers who commented took it seriously.

Tell 'em anything you want, use a straight face and a sincere time, and they lap it right up.  Just look at ABC, MSNbc, CNN, et cetera.

I would have thought the 'Obvious' tag would have trumped the 'Amusing' tag on this one...

Or am I just getting cynical in my old age?
