What is it about Canada that produces so much comedic talent?  Per capita, they've done pretty nicely with that.

I loved watching John Candy in any roll he did. I admit I never saw Wagons East, however.

I saw him and a cast of touring SCTV players back when I was a kid.

He was billing himself as Johnny LaRue, the swanky cheeseball character on SCTV that wore a robe.  I still remember a slow-motion football reenactment bit that they did that was the funniest skit I had seen up to that point in my life.

One of my favorite SCTV bits is where he hosts The Plasmatics on "The Fishin' Musician".

Didn't Kurt Cobain attempt suicide this day also?

i rmeember flying home and at the airport, my mom telling me John Candy had died, and then I think on the radio, they said Kurt Cobain had been rushed to the hospital for an OD.

/and then what, six weeks later, he painted the walls via a 12 gauge

That's what they call me, or Melanoma Head. They'll call me that. "Melanoma Head's coming." I'm s... uncle! Maisy Russell's uncle! "

Such a shame, 43 is a young age to die, especially from something that could most likely have been prevented had he taken better care of himself. I'm gunna have to fire up Wagons East later.

I'm going to have to go with "Who's Harry Crumb" on that. Yet as bad as it was I still watched it countless times. Absolutely loved John Candy.

I remember watching some U.S. entertainment show many years ago.  They were showing clips of interviews with several celebs, all of whom had their name printed and "singer" or "actor" or "comedian" or whatever their vocation was in subtitles.  John Candy came on the screen and it said, "JOHN CANDY.  Famous Canadian."

My friends and I looked at each other and just lost it.

Holy shiat, is that Splash? Haven't thought about that movie in a long, long time.

I wish John Candy was still alive, but here's the thing: If he was, would anybody notice? Think about how the rest of the SCTV and original SNL cast are holding up today. Most of them are either washed up, crazy, have dissapeared off the face of the earth, or some combination of the above. The sad truth is that the kind of movies that made John Candy a star were already gone by the time he died. If he was still alive today, Candy would probably be spending his days like Rick Moranis does: Taking care of his family, rather than making movies.

Anyways, rest in peace, funny man/ Canadian football enthusiast.

I like to think he would have joined Christopher Guest's supporting cast, like two other SCTV alumi, Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara.
