Here's how this reads. The guy was tossing out what he thought was a joke to a guy from a humor blog. Joke was not received well. NASCAR being ever defensive about this issue decided to run with it.

Not defending him for a crass error in judgment. But he doesn't need a shrink. He needs a COMM114 professor to tell him about how to know your audience.

This. Though to be fair NASCAR isn't sending him to a shrink, they're sending him to a psychologist, which would be great if he's having relationship problems or is a genius at solving some kind of specific problem that researchers would like to study.

He wanted to give a Laurel and Hardy handshake to the new driver.

By "driving like he's on the 405", does that mean he's in a white Ford Bronco?  Or going 25MPH in the left
lane while yakking on his cell phone?

Ok, so he made the "joke" to an mtv person who is making a douchey sounding tv show, the only other person present was a nascar staffer and it wasn't even recorded. The only reason anyone knows what happened is because nascar decided to make a big deal of it. Sending him to a psychologist...really? Send him to a pr guy or something.

Yup. Add in that NASCAR is desperately trying to transform it's image as a sport full of racist, right wing morons and you see the problem here.

It was really a dumbass thing to say to anybody, let alone a member of the media.

They're sending him to a "Sports Diversity Expert".  He said something racially offensive (from my sources it was either "N*gger-rigged" or "Afro-Engineered" but I don't know), so they're handling it appropriately. Sending him to a PR guy would be like saying, "Look, it's fine to be racist, just know how and when to do it."   People are acting as if what he said was okay, as long as no one heard it. NASCAR is behaving in a genuine manner, saying it's not okay under any circumstances. If they didn't do anything and it somehow got out, they'd be raked over the coals for fostering racist language and attitudes.

So frankly, it's laughable to me that people are criticizing NASCAR for:
1. Hearing about a member of their organization saying something racially insensitive.
2. Taking appropriate action even when no one heard it

NASCAR, being a beloved southern institution, doesn't exactly have a lot of fans in the black community. I'm not sure they want to risk alienate themselves further by just letting something like this slide.

With all the construction on the 405 I figured they meant he was sitting in his car moving about 3 MPH, swearing constantly while blasting really crappy gangsta rap. Definitely all things NASCAR would frown upon. Well, maybe not the swearing as long as it wasn't on the air.

"Sports Diversity Expert?" "MTV Blogger?" These are paying jobs?. And here we are trying to contribute something useful to society like a bunch of suckers.
