JohnCarter: organizmx: Fissile: That house in the picture cost $800K - $1 million.  The property taxes are probably $30K a year.  The people in this story are not "hipsters", they are the 1%......."Financial adviser at Morgan Stanley",,,,,HELLO!

//Not hipsters

Actually looked it up. They paid $1.32 mill for the house, and you were spot on: $30,000 a year in taxes.

Well done sir.

So they have 1 kid and 6 bedrooms.  Not saying they can't spend the money they way they want, but I wonder if they are renting out to folks??

===============

Renting our rooms in their zoning area is probably illegal.

It is.

They have another child or two, and there's four bedrooms taken up.

Add an office and guest bedroom and done.

LemSkroob: They can put whatever face they want on it, but the fact remains they packed up and joined the White Flight just like their parents did decades ago. But they will never admit it.

Just more in a long line of people defeated by this city. Next!!!

If they were looking to avoid black people, Essex County, NJ was one of the worst choices they could have made.

So, what you are saying is "the city defeats white people at a higher rate than other races?"

The "New York is my playground and my life will be just like it is on TV" whites, yes.

Typically, the other races that move here (asians, middle eastern, hispanics) know it takes hard work to make a living and aren't here "for the life experience"

You just described my family....refugees from Eastern Europe who came over after WWII.  New York is where one of my uncles jumped ship in 1940, the rest came to NYC later because my uncle was already here.   They were just looking to survive.

Fair enough, but the NY that was a destination in 1940 is very different from today. The European descendants that move here today (from within the US) do so because they think the 1980s gritty city was cool (because they saw it in some movies) and maybe they will be drinking at a "true dive bar" bar one day and notice they are sitting next to Lou Reed.

Back years ago we had a word for these people.  First, they were DINKs.  Now they are YUPEEs.  Later, in the 90's another word became popular.  Douche.

That is all.

The Dynamite Monkey: Here's some unsolicited advice for people looking to do what this article states, in suburban NJ or suburban anywhere:

Don't buy the house, buy into the town.

Yes you can afford a nicer house in a lesser town, but you will regret it.  Buy into the towns with the best schools and a vibrant downtown.  Stay out of "bedroom communities".  They are a slow death.

Believe it or not, you can have a somewhat urbane life in the NJ suburbs if you choose well.

/ I miss my life in Manhattan, but much less than I thought I would

This.  I grew up in South Jersey and want to move back when my daughter is old enough for school.  I don't want to live in just the townships that are filled with only developments.  Looking at towns like Pitman.  Nice downtown area and is a real town.  Along with that, there is a stop there for a planned light rail line.

I would not really say those were hipsters. I would say those are people who at their age can now afford to move to NJ.
