"I've always been an athlete, and I've always been a gamer," she said while fighting back tears. "When I had the opportunity to be in the NFL, one of the world's most competitive leagues, I absolutely had to take the chance."

Dude, what's your THAC0?

I was really hoping some team or other was going to take her in the post-draft UFA frenzy just to see what would happen. I really want to see a woman make a team somewhere. I've gotten into some hellacious arguments in the Artist Formerly Known As Lingerie Football League threads over that point.

But that? Is not a combine performance that is going to get you signed. I think we can all agree on that.

I rule the "first woman to try out for the NFL" title is still open.  That wasn't a tryout, it was a blowout.

2013-03-04 02:22:51 AM
I did find it curious that she claimed to consistently make 60-yard field goals, then the only footage available was grainy iPhone video of her at some indoor "fun center" softly booting a single kick from extra-point distance.

I mean, sure, I *buy* the Magnums and leave the box conspicuously placed, but I have my real stash of secretly-shipped-from-Japan "chiisana-san haji fukuro" in petite

Silberman paid a registration fee -- about $275 --

She got ripped off.

I'd only charge her 50 bucks to make an ass of herself.

She could be the NFL's greatest on-sides kicker.

It only takes $275 to try out for the NFL?  shiat, I want to do it.  Would be worth it just to say I did.

Since the world is too PC and we live in a Gynocracy, please  allow me to be the first one to say:

"Why wasnt the OBVIOUS tag use or a "BLATANTLY OBVIOUS" was not created for this article.

It is amazing, she can't make it on an NFL team, but I can fold laundry and make a nice tasty dinner for my family and clean the bathroom if needed after getting home from work.

Well I guess there is always giving birth to one-up us men on....

2013-03-04 06:42:33 AM
OK, that was pretty lame [sic].

But before piling on, I'd like to know whether there's any evidence for what she has kicked outside of the combine. Did she kick in college (not sure that's even allowed) or high school? Or did she just watch a few games on TV and think "I could do that"? Maybe it's asking too much of modern journalism, but that would be my first question.

OK, so she can't kick, but did anybody check to see if she can throw? There might still be a place for her in Kansas City...

She has to "know how to win" and "help the defense" and be a "team leader". . . yeah, I'd say she could do it.

Er she was injured. Probably can't out-kick a man, but I'm pretty certain her PB is much better that those kicks. Letting women play in the NFL pretty much shows it's not a game for tough guys. Unlike football (soccer) which is a man's game. You won't catch a women turning out for The Arsenal* anytime soon :p

*not counting all the effeminate Frenchies they have.

wow what a complete waste of time. what a poor atempt at attention whoring. a weak ass kick, realizing its not as easy as you thought, faking an injury not to look stupid. but hey i was a female here amoungst the men. i think dragonchild said it pretty well as well.

now onto the Lingerie league with ya

I'm all in favor of women competing wiuth men in sports where it's feasible. But NFL football? A sport that is almost based upon body mass and strength? The pool of women who can actually compete with men on that basis is so tiny that the probability of finding anyone with a significant football-related talent in that pool is virtually null.
This was a stunt - and stunts don't help with real progress.

Does anybody else think that this wasn't about her trying out for a NFL team, but her attempt at trying out for somebody to give her a reality show?

It's the kicker.  All you really need to do is kick a ball straight for about 55 yards and you're in.

Though I was hoping to see her try to stop a kickoff return.

It's fun watching the Aussie football guys try to tackle a punt returner.

So, that is why no follow through on the kick, just the half kick that will pass the ball to another player.

Did you catch the interview, where she admitted she hadn't practiced the few days prior nor did she stretch or warm up before her attempt?  At first I thought this was just bad luck, until I heard the interview.  Being already an athlete from another sport, she knows warm up drills matter.  My sis was always a basketball player, but when she agreed to play a different sport, even a pickup game, she always stretched and warmed up.  She may be a good kicker, but she sure didn't show it.

All signs point to her just being an AW. I have not seen any real evidence of her kicking elsewhere. There have been a few women who have kicked in college with varying degrees of success (example).

she laid off practicing b/c she had a quad injury.  she didn't do her warmup kicks b/c she had a quad injury.  She warmed up and stretched before trying to kick.

Nah, I'm sure her performance will compel more women to pay the $275 and tryout just to prove women can do better than that feeble attempt.

It was pretty damn obvious that she hadn't kicked a football very much. Her approach to the ball was all off which lead to her kicking the ball with her shin. A person who has been practicing and had built their skills up to the point she claimed to have wouldn't have done that.

I can routinely kick 50 yarders, no problem.  I forgot to mention that its on a field goofing around with no pads on, no snap, and no line trying to block it.  Of course, I don't really keep track of my percentage or anything.   Oh, and it's a soccer ball not a football, but that doesn't matter, right?
