Rick Perry and the TX legislature are a bunch of short sighted morons.  More at 11.

2013-03-03 04:53:24 PM
In the fiscal crunch of 2011, the Legislature cut the state's family-planning budget by two-thirds, with some lawmakers claiming that they were defunding the "abortion industry." Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, found that more than 50 family-planning clinics had closed statewide as a result.

Now, amid estimates that the cuts could lead to 24,000 additional 2014-15 births at a cost to taxpayers of $273 million,  lawmakers are seeking a way to restore financing without ruffling feathers.

Good god what a bunch of farking idiots. Anyone with half a brain can see that reducing access to abortion will cause low-income births to increase, and having a kid is pretty damn expensive. Of course the taxpayers are on the hook for it. I mean really, in what scenario would this not happen? Oh, and you can bet that since it's Texas, many of these kids are born to Hispanic parent(s).

LOL

Just, LOLOLOL

Providing free contraception for women (and condoms for men) when they turn 16 or 18 is insanely cost effective. Once you remove morality from the issue it doesn't make economic sense not to do it.

I don't think people quite understand that safety nets are designed to keep society as a whole better off. Take them away and no amount of 'American Exceptionalism' will keep the nation from growing worse, on the whole.

You can make plenty of moral arguments for this.  You just have to start from a position that isn't "Sex is sin, and we must punish sin as heavily as possible not matter the cost."

Rather, stop taking care of American children. Stop providing for future American citizens. Punish people who have sex and no money and hurt their children worse. Or maybe we could take those children away to punish those welfare queens. And we could then ... what? Give the children to those that can afford them? Like the wealthy? The rich? They can afford 100s of children.

I agree with you in a sense, but you keep using that word.  I happen to think that contraception is a moral choice. Actually forcing gestation is immoral. Too bad christians aren't bright enough to appreciate that.

In other words, we haven't "removed morality from the issue," as you state. We've removed irrational and barbaric religion.  Big difference.

Agreed it I would say it is more moral. My point was it is really hard to make any economic argument against it.

"It's a much better way to treat the women because they don't just have family-planning issues," said Senator Robert Deuell, Republican of Greenville, a family physician who has advocated an increase in primary-care services for women.

This couldn't sound any more arrogant if he tried.  He's being such a good person by acknowledging that women should be treated as people.

Well, it might not happen if you took some of the money you're no longer spending on planned parenthood and instead used it to teach comprehensive sexual education to school children.  Or you could do even better and put condom dispensers in the school bathrooms.

Of course, both of those scenarios assume that 1) we're not talking about Texass, and 2) Texan taxpayers have the mental capacity to remember when they were randy youngsters and to realize that their kids aren't magically different.

It comes with a real live children in poverty that grow up to be non-productive members of society that end up costing everyone more moral.  But some folks can't see beyond their own enjoyment of being tuff on layabouts.

I know people here are tempted to think that without planned parenthood personally putting its restraining hand on everyone's penis, we'd all breed like rabbits and overpopulate the planet.
The truth is rarely so politically convenient.

Well, since your parents knew they would grow older and get monthly handouts from the government for the rest of their lives, I'm sure you're quite unproductive yourself, right?

This is the part the Derp brigade find impossible.

And how is it more moral to (by default) encourage pumping out more poor kids than to prevent them?  As if we could stop folks, whose sole pleasurable pastime is farking, from farking.

I've always advocated a well funded orphanage to go along with jail time and sterilization for the dole mongers.
Kids still get taken care of (by people who are actually qualified), and dumbasses who couldn't be bothered to put on a condom only create 1 additional mouth to feed instead of 17.
