Hunh, I knew that dragons mated in flight, but not in space. I guess after ending the threat of Thread they decided to try a few new things.

/wonder what that would feel like to their riders back in the weyrs

Obviously dragons mate in space. They need the extreme temp of re-entry to incubate their eggs to make it possible for them to hatch. They do so in mid-air and use their winks to break their fall so they don't splat. The weak don't survive birth.
