No!

You don't get to include that picture in such a sad story. I can not be the only person currently struggling with the laughter and sadness.

No. Bad newspaper including that photo. It's not just the hat, I'm not going "haha, foreign cultures are funny and weird". His head... his neck, why is it doing that? It's like someone photoshopped it to bring his head 6 inches closer to her. She looks like she's been forced into the wedding. But the hat is funny...

Zarquon's Flat Tire: "God only takes the good people," said fellow student Moshe Meisels, 21.

That's why murderers, rapists and other criminals never die. Also, does that mean the baby isn't "good people?"

WTF?

They're Orthodox Jews, they don't even drive, hence the car service.

Really sad story. Hope the baby makes it. :(

Not just Orthodox.  Haredi Hasidic Orthodox Jews, or "ultra-Orthodox" as some people would say.

Bird, I'm sure there were other Jews killed in car accidents too.  But probably none where the infant was removed by emergency C-section from his dying mother.

p51d007: Had this been a muslim couple, I doubt there would be a lot of pokes at how they were dressed, but, since it wasn't a Christian, Hindu, Buddha or Jew, it's full speed ahead with the anti-Jewish humor.

You've been here since 2005 so you've just got no excuse on this one. That hat would be mocked on anyone, and it would be a dereliction of Fark not to.

BarkingUnicorn: Also the "don't want my baby crushed by a seatbelt in case of accident" mentality. Really, folks, do you think that kid would have survived if it was belted?

Quite possibly, and may have had a mother besides (notice that the driver survived).
This "seatbelt crushing" idea is silly untrained armchair physics that only goes as deep as "but the seatbelt is squeezing her belly!" in its reasoning.  If the force of acceleration from being restrained by a seatbelt was greater than the force imparted by the pavement after being ejected from a car at high speed, seatbelts wouldn't be such an efficacious life-saving device.

The tragic couple were only 21.  Probably don't have a car and like most New Yorkers have to rely on car service when a car is needed.  I'm a New Yorker and take taxis occasionally.  I try to  remember to wear seat belts but know a lot of taxi passengers do not wear them.  In this case, woman is seven months pregnant; should be an added reason to wear a seat belt. But her added girth and the couple's probable anxiety over her stomach pains in the 7th month of pregnancy was an added reason that seat belts were not worn.  The driver who was most likely wearing a seat belt survived.  Lesson to be learned.  Wear seat belts all the time when you're in the back seat!

So sad that they won't get to raise their son (if he survives).  But there's lots of other family members who will step up. And speaking of Orthodox Jewish families, "Fiddler on the Roof" is on Turner Classic Movies this afternoon at 4:45.  One of my favorite musicals.

They were orthodox she might have been forced into it. :(

SpeelChuck: No it doesn't. They do not practice vigilante justice against people outside the community. There are instances of intimidation within the community against perceived wrongdoers widespread, systemic, organized suppression of child rape victims, like the recent case involving the former unlicensed therapistprominent Satmar rebbe Nechemya Weberman recently convicted of sex abuse against a young womansexually enslaving and raping a 12 year old for 3 years straight. In that case, supporters of the accused  tried to intimidate intimidated and ostracizedthe accuser and her family, including harassing them until they had to close their business.Other than perhaps some misunderstandings or confusion on your part as far as certain codes of conduct that occur within their community (and not vis-a-vis outsiders), I can't understand why you would want to malign an entire group in this manner.

Dude, these assholes make Catholic clergy look like amateurs.  Weberman was one conviction out of HUNDREDS of unprosecuted allegations of child rape and it's still widely denied even after they showed video footage of the good rebbe raping the child. fark these people sideways, they can all DIAF if that's how they want to live their life. Plus they're all welfare queens that take my money because they don't want to work. Don't even get me started on Kiryas Joel

There's stereotyping for reasons of ignorance and fear, and there's stereotyping for very, very good reasons. The Satmars are a corrupted and evil people that frankly abuse their children and the charity of others. fark them.

I was going to go with "At least that's what Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia are going to tell him", but for some reason picked Voldemort instead.

What the fark?!

He wanted to murder someone else while killing himself?! That's seriously farked up. Lock him away for life or execute him.

/I do not have sympathy for that kind of shiat.

Anyone who invokes God on this one needs to shut their stupid yap and think about it for just a moment.  Unless they're going to say "God is a real dick sometimes", that is.

That said, if she was ejected from the cab, I suspect she wasn't wearing her seatbelt....

Orthodox so mightn't be familiar with seatbelts & whatnot.  Besides if she was in early or active labor, sometimes it's a bit tricky to get comfortable.....
